Shortages of nurses are one of the biggest challenges healthcare systems face around the world. Given the wide range of contexts and individuals working in nursing, a 'one-size-fits-all' retention strategy is unlikely to be effective. Knowing what matters most to nurses at different career stages would help employers and policy-makers who want to enhance nurse retention to design tailored strategies. 

Coming and going: A narrative review exploring the push-pull factors during nurses' careers

Classic assessment methods present negative emotional alterations for students, such as stress, anxiety, fear and nervousness; these could be solved by applying the Escape Room, which is a promising tool where students experience positive emotions that are critical to learning. To explore the experiences and perceptions of physiotherapy students regarding the use of an Escape Room game-based model for their assessment in contrast to conventional approaches. A phenomenological-hermeneutical study was conducted. The assessment took place in two different modalities and on different days: 1) a traditional assessment method and 2) an assessment method incorporating a game-based model. All students participated in the two assessment processes. Fifty-six physiotherapy students took part in this study. The detailed analysis of the results allowed us to classify them into two main themes: 1) Strengths of the Escape Room as part of an assessment approach and, 2) Weaknesses of the Escape Room as part of an assessment approach. In turn, from these main themes emerged the sub-themes and their different units of meaning. The results suggest that new teaching and assessment methodologies incorporating innovative models such as the Escape Room are effective in evaluating the skills and performance of physiotherapy students, which can be used to complement the traditional assessment methods.

The chapter also offers practical recommendations and discusses emerging opportunities for incorporating escape rooms into various educational contexts. By examining the multifaceted aspects of educational escape rooms, this chapter aims to support educators in leveraging these innovative tools to create engaging learning experiences and foster positive student outcomes. 

Unlocking the Potential of Educational Escape Rooms in Higher Education

A purpose of this activity was to determine if an escape room activity could familiarize prospective students with information about a program, nurture an interest in a nursing career, and expose individuals to active teaching strategies. Ten prospective nursing students participated in an escape room recruitment activity that introduced them to aspects of nursing care. The activity decreased participants' nervousness about beginning the nursing program. Escape rooms are an active and engaging strategy that can be used to introduce prospective students to nursing and facilitate team building for groups.
