The objective of this paper is to give a comprehensive introduction to applied cryptography with an engineer or computer scientist in mind. The emphasis is on the knowledge needed to create practical systems which supports integrity, confidentiality, or authenticity. Topics covered includes an introduction to the concepts in cryptography, attacks against cryptographic systems, key use and handling, random bit generation, encryption modes, and message authentication codes. Recommendations on algorithms and further reading is given in the end of the paper. This paper should make the reader able to build, understand and evaluate system descriptions and designs based on the cryptographic components described in the paper.

Usually, a proof of a theorem contains more knowledge than the mere fact that the theorem is true. For instance, to prove that a graph is Hamiltonian it suffices to exhibit a Hamiltonian tour in it; however, this seems to contain more knowledge than the single bit Hamiltonian/non-Hamiltonian.In this paper a computational complexity theory of the “knowledge” contained in a proof is developed. Zero-knowledge proofs are defined as those proofs that convey no additional knowledge other than the correctness of the proposition in question. Examples of zero-knowledge proof systems are given for the languages of quadratic residuosity and 'quadratic nonresiduosity. These are the first examples of zero-knowledge proofs for languages not known to be efficiently recognizable.

Introduction to finite fields and their applications: Preface

Finite fields play a fundamental role in some of the most fascinating applications of modern algebra to the real world. These applications occur in the general area of data communication, a vital concern in our information society. Technological breakthroughs like space and satellite communications and mundane matters like guarding the privacy of information in data banks all depend in one way or another on the use of finite fields. Because of the importance of these applications to communication and information theory, we will present them in greater detail in the following chapters. Chapter 8 discusses applications of finite fields to coding theory, the science of reliable transmission of messages, and Chapter 9 deals with applications to cryptology, the art of enciphering and deciphering secret messages. This chapter is devoted to applications of finite fields within mathematics. These applications are indeed numerous, so we can only offer a selection of possible topics. Section 1 contains some results on the use of finite fields in affine and projective geometry and illustrates in particular their role in the construction of projective planes with a finite number of points and lines. Section 2 on combinatorics demonstrates the variety of applications of finite fields to this subject and points out their usefulness in problems of design of statistical experiments. In Section 3 we give the definition of a linear modular system and show how finite fields are involved in this theory.

Introduction to finite fields and their applications: Theoretical Applications of Finite Fields

Wireless sensor networks can be deployed in any attended or unattended environments like environmental monitoring, agriculture, military, health care etc., where the sensor nodes forward the sensing data to the gateway node. As the sensor node has very limited battery power and cannot be recharged after deployment, it is very important to design a secure, effective and light weight user authentication and key agreement protocol for accessing the sensed data through the gateway node over insecure networks. Most recently, Turkanovic et?al. proposed a light weight user authentication and key agreement protocol for accessing the services of the WSNs environment and claimed that the same protocol is efficient in terms of security and complexities than related existing protocols. In this paper, we have demonstrated several security weaknesses of the Turkanovic et?al. protocol. Additionally, we have also illustrated that the authentication phase of the Turkanovic et?al. is not efficient in terms of security parameters. In order to fix the above mentioned security pitfalls, we have primarily designed a novel architecture for the WSNs environment and basing upon which a proposed scheme has been presented for user authentication and key agreement scheme. The security validation of the proposed protocol has done by using BAN logic, which ensures that the protocol achieves mutual authentication and session key agreement property securely between the entities involved. Moreover, the proposed scheme has simulated using well popular AVISPA security tool, whose simulation results show that the protocol is SAFE under OFMC and CL-AtSe models. Besides, several security issues informally confirm that the proposed protocol is well protected in terms of relevant security attacks including the above mentioned security pitfalls. The proposed protocol not only resists the above mentioned security weaknesses, but also achieves complete security requirements including specially energy efficiency, user anonymity, mutual authentication and user-friendly password change phase. Performance comparison section ensures that the protocol is relatively efficient in terms of complexities. The security and performance analysis makes the system so efficient that the proposed protocol can be implemented in real-life application.

A secure light weight scheme for user authentication and key agreement in multi-gateway based wireless sensor networks

In this work, we present a method of computing the linear complexity of the sequences produced by the cryptographic sequence generator known as generalized self-shrinking generator. This approach is based on the comparison of different shifted versions of a single PN-sequence. Just the analysis of binary digits in these shifted sequences allows one to determine the linear complexity of those generalized sequences. The method is simple, direct and efficient. Furthermore, the concept of linear recurrence relationship and the rows of the Sierpinski’s triangle are the basic tools in this computation.

Computing the Linear Complexity in a Class of Cryptographic Sequences

This paper addresses some security issues in Vehicular Ad hoc NETworks (VANETs). In particular, privacy of nodes and integrity of messages are here analysed. The proposed model also deals with other important topics in VANETs such as self-organization, communication and computation efficiency, and technology penetration. In order to fulfill all these requirements, the described scheme uses tools such as group management, ring signatures and data aggregation schemes.

Recovering decimation-based cryptographic sequences by means of linear CAs

Binary sequences are algebraic structures currently used as security elements in Internet of Things devices, sensor networks, e-commerce, and cryptography. In this work, a contribution to the evaluation of such sequences is introduced. In fact, we present a novel algorithm to compute a fundamental parameter for this kind of structure: the linear complexity, which is related to the predictability (or non-predictability) of the binary sequences. Our algorithm reduced the computation of the linear complexity to just the addition modulo two (XOR logic operation) of distinct terms of the sequence. The performance of this procedure was better than that of other algorithms found in the literature. In addition, the amount of required sequence to perform this computation was more realistic than in the rest of the algorithms analysed. Tables, figures, and numerical results complete the work.
