Vanadium oxides with multioxidation states and various crystalline structures offer unique electrical, optical, optoelectronic and magnetic properties, which could be manipulated for various applications. For the past 30 years, significant efforts have been made to study the fundamental science and explore the potential for vanadium oxide materials in ion batteries, water splitting, smart windows, supercapacitors, sensors, and so on. This review focuses on the most recent progress in synthesis methods and applications of some thermodynamically stable and metastable vanadium oxides, including but not limited to V2O3, V3O5, VO2, V3O7, V2O5, V2O2, V6O13, and V4O9. We begin with a tutorial on the phase diagram of the V–O system. The second part is a detailed review covering the crystal structure, the synthesis protocols, and the applications of each vanadium oxide, especially in batteries, catalysts, smart windows, and supercapacitors. We conclude with a brief perspective on how material and device improvements can address current deficiencies. This comprehensive review could accelerate the development of novel vanadium oxide structures in related applications.

Recent Progress on V2O5 Based Electroactive Materials: Synthesis, Properties and Supercapacitor Application

The nickel-based oxides are treated as favourable pseudocapacitive electrode materials for energy storage application owing to their inexpensive nature, well-defined redox activity, as well as liberty in tuning the microstructures by changing the synthesis process optimizing its vital parameters. However, a real challenge for fabricating nickel-based materials is to sustain the uniform morphology onto a conductive substrates like FTO, ITO, stainless steel, nickel foam, nickel mesh, and copper foam etc. Herein, nickel oxide (NiO) nanostructures (NSs) with high pseudocapacitive performance have been prepared via the sol-gel technique for energy storage application. The structural identity of NiO-NSs is documented by X-ray diffraction, which confirmed the monoclinic crystal structure of the synthesized NSs. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the valence state of the nickel as ‘+2′ and oxygen as ‘-2′. The field-emission scanning electron microscopy of NiO-NSs revealed non-uniform large spherical clusters agglomerated onto the surface. The NiO-NSs manifested the mesoporous channels and exhibit a surface area of 31.4 m2g-1, which is evaluated through Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. The fabricated NiO-nickel foam (NF) electrode exhibit a high specific capacitance of 871 Fg−1 at a scan rate of 5 mVs−1 in 4 M KOH solution. Moreover, the NiO−NF electrode displayed the cyclic retention of 86.5 % after 10,000 cycles. The mesoporous channels of the electrode material afford plentiful, accessible, active sites to the effective charge transportation of electrolyte charges over the electrolyte-electrode interface and boost the electrochemical performance of NiONF −electrodes. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor device constructed with NiO−NF as the anode and AC−NF as the cathode delivers high specific energy and specific power (24 Whkg−1 at 2.9 kWkg−1), and good cycling stability (retention of 89.7 % over 5 000 cycles) 

Sol-gel synthesized nickel oxide nanostructures on nickel foam and nickel mesh for a targeted energy storage application

In this study, we have developed a feasible and eco-friendly electrode material for supercapacitor (SCs) application by effectively synthesizing different morphological structures of tungsten oxide nanostructures (WO3-NSs). The concentrated acids play a crucial role in the synthesis of WO3-NSs and are employed to evaluate the electrochemical activity. The stable phase formation and the crystal structures of WO3-NSs were confirmed by thermogravimetric and X-ray analysis. From the field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), the hexagonal-shaped nanosheets, one-dimensional nanorods (1D NRs), and heterogeneous non-uniform agglomerated nanosheets were observed for the WO3-NSs. The presence of functional groups and the stretching-bending vibrations of WO bonds were detected by Fourier transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopy respectively. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) offers a more in-depth morphological, structural, and elemental composition and electronic states investigation of the optimized WO3-NRs. Additionally, the electrochemical properties of the WO3-NSs have been examined in 1 M KOH electrolyte using Nickel Foam (NF) as a current collector. Furthermore, the M-WO3-NF electrode reveals higher specific capacity (Csp) and gravimetric capacitance (Cg) of 72 mAh/g and 600 F/g with high energy density (Ed) of 17 Wh/kg, and power density (Pd) of 321 W/kg as well as the superior Columbic efficiency (96.9 %) at 5 mA/cm2. The M-WO3 electrode exhibits 91 % capacitive retention over 5000 cycles. The M-WO3-NF is used as the cathode and activated carbon (AC) as the anode in the design of an aqueous hybrid supercapacitor (AHSC) device. Notably, the M-WO3-NF//AC-NF device offers a Pd of 1060 W/kg at an Ed of 9 Wh/kg and remarkable electrochemical stability of 80 % over 3000 charge-discharge cycles. These results highlight the excellent electrochemical functionality and advantages of the M-WO3-NRs as a promising cathode for practical energy-storage systems. 

Acid substitutions for WO3 nanostructures synthesis by the hydrothermal route and its effect on physio-chemical and electrochemical properties for supercapacitors

Because of the complexity of various oxidation states of vanadium, vanadium oxides show a large variety of stable and metastable structures, which pose an inevitable challenge to synthesize vanadium oxides with high purity, well-controlled stoichiometry, to their different morphologies and meticulously designed nanostructures, a must for high electrochemical performance devices for Supercapacitors. Vanadium oxide-based materials have been extensively studied for their metal-insulator transition behavior, and their unique characteristics that making them a promising candidate for electrochemical performance, supercapacitors and energy storage capabilities. This review article will discuss the synthesis methods, structural characterization techniques, and applications of vanadium oxide-based materials. We will also highlight the recent advances in vanadium oxide and provide insights into these materials' prospects in the Supercapacitors field.
