Cervicovaginal shedding of HIV type 1 is related to genital tract inflammation independent of changes in vaginal microbiota.
Caroline M. Mitchell,Jane Hitti,Kathleen Paul,Kathy Agnew,Susan E. Cohn,Susan E. Cohn,Amneris E. Luque,Robert W. Coombs +7 more
TL;DR: The proinflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-8 are associated with higher cervicovaginal HIV-1 RNA concentrations, even after controlling for plasma viral load and vaginal microbial cofactors, and this association suggests that there may be additional, noninfectious causes of inflammation that increase cervical HIV- 1 shedding.
