EGF receptor trafficking: consequences for signaling and cancer.

Opuntia ficus-indica, commonly referred to as prickly pear or nopal cactus, is a dicotyledonous angiosperm plant. It belongs to the Cactaceae family and is characterized by its remarkable adaptation to arid and semi-arid climates in tropical and subtropical regions of the globe. In the last decade, compelling evidence for the nutritional and health benefit potential of this cactus has been provided by academic scientists and private companies. Notably, its rich composition in polyphenols, vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids and amino acids has been highlighted through the use of a large panel of extraction methods. The identified natural cactus compounds and derivatives were shown to be endowed with biologically relevant activities including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, antimicrobial and neuroprotective properties. The present review is aimed at stressing the major classes of cactus components and their medical interest through emphasis on some of their biological effects, particularly those having the most promising expected health benefit and therapeutic impacts.

The liver is one of the most important organs in the body, performing a fundamental role in the regulation of diverse processes, among which the metabolism, secretion, storage, and detoxification of endogenous and exogenous substances are prominent. Due to these functions, hepatic diseases continue to be among the main threats to public health, and they remain problems throughout the world. Despite enormous advances in modern medicine, there are no completely effective drugs that stimulate hepatic function, that offer complete protection of the organ, or that help to regenerate hepatic cells. Thus, it is necessary to identify pharmaceutical alternatives for the treatment of liver diseases, with the aim of these alternatives being more effective and less toxic. The use of some plants and the consumption of different fruits have played basic roles in human health care, and diverse scientific investigations have indicated that, in those plants and fruits so identified, their beneficial effects can be attributed to the presence of chemical compounds that are called phytochemicals. The present review had as its objective the collecting of data based on research conducted into some fruits (grapefruit, cranberries, and grapes) and plants [cactus pear (nopal) and cactus pear fruit, chamomile, silymarin, and spirulina], which are consumed frequently by humans and which have demonstrated hepatoprotective capacity, as well as an analysis of a resin (propolis) and some phytochemicals extracted from fruits, plants, yeasts, and algae, which have been evaluated in different models of hepatotoxicity.

Cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) belongs to the family Cactaceae. Family Cactaceae is reported to contain about 130 genera and nearly 1500 species. This plant is native of Mexico and it is widely distributed in Mexico and in all American hemispheres as well as in Africa and in the Mediterranean basin. It has been used in traditional folk medicine because of its role in treating a number of diseases and conditions, including anti-inflammatory effects hypoglycemic effects inhibition of stomach ulceration, neuroprotective effects Through antioxidant actions and also used for treating diabetes, burns, bronchial, asthma and indigestion in many countries over the world. It is also used in Pharma industry as a pharmaceutical agent. The fruit, as well as cactus stem are used to prepare value-added products, such as jam, squash, wine, pickle, body lotions, shampoo, creams, etc. It also has several medicinal and industrial uses. Its seeds can be used as flavouring agents. Due to the remarkable biological activity of Opuntia and its constituents, it will be appropriate to develop them as a medicine.

Regulation of the Ligand-dependent Activation of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor by Calmodulin

Ni-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared using hydrothermal method and characterized by means of XRD, TEM, and TGA. The detailed characterization results revealed that the catalyst possessed spherical morphology and excellent crystalline and thermal properties. Photocatalytic capability of Ni-doped TiO2 nanoparticles was estimated by means of ofloxacin degradation under solar light. About 70% degradation of ofloxacin (25 mg/L, natural pH) was obtained with 1 g/L catalyst dose. The microbiological analysis was carried by examining its antibacterial activity against E. coli culture on agar plate. The results indicated a decrease in antibacterial activity of drug solution with increase in irradiation time, which further supported the excellent catalytic behavior of the prepared Ni-doped TiO2.

Two new lectins were purified from the tubers of Arisaema intermedium Blume and A. wallichianum Hook. f. (family: Araceae) by affinity chromatography on asialofetuin-linked amino activated silica beads. The bound lectins were eluted with 0.1 M glycine-HCl, pH 2.5. They gave a single band corresponding to subunit M(r) 13.4 kDa in SDS-PAGE, pH 8.3. On gel filtration chromatography, the lectins showed a M(r) of 51.2 kDa, suggesting a homotetrameric structure. Both the lectins gave a single peak on size exclusion HPLC and cation-exchange columns and a single band on PAGE, pH 4.5. However, like other monocot lectins, they gave multiple bands in isoelectric focusing and at PAGE 8.3. The lectins were inhibited by N-acetyl-D-lactosamine (LacNAc), a disaccharide and asialofetuin, a complex desialylated serum glycoprotein. They had no requirement for divalent metal ions i.e., Ca2+ and Mn2+ for their activity and were found to be mitogenic towards human lymphocytes. A. intermedium showed antiproliferative effect against various human cancer cell lines in vitro.
