The European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) is providing a sustainable pan---European Computing Grid to support e---Science, integrating more than 350 computing resource centers worldwide. One of its main challenges is that the middleware driving this production infrastructure is constantly evolving, as it adapts to the changing needs of the EGI Community. Since the software is provided by external technology providers, it needs to pass through a quality verification process before it is included in the EGI official release called Unified Middleware Distribution (UMD). Therefore, all software components undergo a release process covering the definition of the functionality and quality criteria, the verification of those criteria, and the testing under production environments. This paper details the design, development and implementation of this software validation process. An analysis is performed on several metrics to evaluate the process impact on the stability of the production infrastructure, by capturing malfunctions and other issues at the initial testing phases.

Validation of Grid Middleware for the European Grid Infrastructure

In large-scale grid environments, accurate failure prediction is critical to achieve effective resource allocation while assuring specified QoS levels, such as reliability. Traditional methods, such as statistical estimation techniques, can be considered to predict the reliability of resources. However, naive statistical methods often ignore critical characteristic behavior of the resources. In particular, periodic behaviors of grid resources are not captured well by statistical methods. In this paper, we present an alternative mechanism for failure prediction. In our approach, the periodic pattern of resource failures are determined and actively exploited for resource allocation with better QoS guarantees. The proposed scheme is evaluated under a realistic simulation environment of computational grids. The availability of computing resources are simulated according to real trace that was collected from our large-scale monitoring experiment on campus computers. Our evaluation results show that the proposed approach enables significantly higher resource scheduling effectiveness under a variety of workloads compared to baseline approaches.

Provisioning of Grid Middleware for EGI in the framework of EGI-InSPIRE

Open multi-agent systems (OMASs) allow autonomous agents (AAs) to collaborate in coalitions to accomplish complex tasks (e.g., swarm robots exploring new terrain). In OMASs, AAs can arbitrarily join and leave the network. Thus, AAs must often collaborate with unknown AAs that may corrupt coalitions, leading to less robust systems. However, measures to improve robustness of OMASs are subject to challenges, decreasing their effectiveness. To understand how to improve coalition robustness in OMASs and address challenges of existing robustness measures, we carried out a literature review and revealed three types of robustness measures (i.e., collaboration coordination, normative control, and reliability prediction). Moreover, we found 21 challenges for the identified robustness measures and 24 corresponding solutions. By carrying out this literature review, we forge new connections between existing measures and identify challenges and measures that apply to multiple existing measures. Hereby, our work supports more robust collaborations between AAs in open systems.

Tackling Challenges of Robustness Measures for Autonomous Agent Collaboration in Open Multi-Agent Systems

The emergence of many-core and massively-parallel computational accelerators (e.g., GPGPUs) has led to user demand for such resources in grid infrastructures. A widely adopted approach for discovering and accessing such resources has, however, yet to emerge.  GPGPUs are an example of a larger class of computational resources, characterized in part by dependence on an allocated CPU. This paper terms such resources "CPU-Dependent Execution Resources" (CDERs). Five conceptual strategies for discovering and accessing CDERs are described and evaluated against key criteria, and all five strategies are compliant with GLUE 1.3, GLUE 2.0, or both. From this evaluation, two of the presented strategies clearly emerge as providing the greatest flexibility for publishing both static and dynamic CDER information and identifying CDERs that satisfy specific job requirements. Furthermore, a two-phase approach to job-submission is proposed for those jobs requiring access to CDERs. The approach is compatible with existing grid services.  Examples are provided to illustrate job submission under each strategy.

Overview and evaluation of conceptual strategies for accessing CPU-dependent execution resources in grid infrastructures

he European Grid Initiative (EGI) provides a sustainable pan-European Grid computing infrastructure for e-Science based on a network of regional and national Grids. The middleware driving this production infrastructure is constantly adapted to the changing needs of the EGI Community by deploying new features and phasing out other features and components that are no longer needed. Unlike previous e-Infrastructure projects, EGI does not develop its own middleware solution, but instead sources the required components from Technology Providers and integrates them in the Unified Middleware Distribution (UMD). In order to guarantee a high quality and reliable operation of the infrastructure, all UMD software must undergo a release process that covers the definition of the functional, performance and quality requirements, the verification of those requirements and testing in production environments.
