Climate strongly influences global wildfire activity, and recent wildfire surges may signal fire weather-induced pyrogeographic shifts. Here we use three daily global climate data sets and three fire danger indices to develop a simple annual metric of fire weather season length, and map spatio-temporal trends from 1979 to 2013. We show that fire weather seasons have lengthened across 29.6 million km2 (25.3%) of the Earth's vegetated surface, resulting in an 18.7% increase in global mean fire weather season length. We also show a doubling (108.1% increase) of global burnable area affected by long fire weather seasons (>1.0 σ above the historical mean) and an increased global frequency of long fire weather seasons across 62.4 million km2 (53.4%) during the second half of the study period. If these fire weather changes are coupled with ignition sources and available fuel, they could markedly impact global ecosystems, societies, economies and climate.

Climate-induced variations in global wildfire danger from 1979-2013

Abstract Background Forests are an essential natural resource to humankind, providing a myriad of direct and indirect benefits. Natural disasters like forest fires have a major impact on global warming and the continued existence of life on Earth. Automatic identification of forest fires is thus an important field to research in order to minimize disasters. Early fire detection can also help decision-makers plan mitigation methods and extinguishing tactics. This research looks at fire/smoke detection from images using AI-based computer vision techniques. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are a type of Artificial Intelligence (AI) approach that have been shown to outperform state-of-the-art methods in image classification and other computer vision tasks, but their training time can be prohibitive. Further, a pretrained CNN may underperform when there is no sufficient dataset available. To address this issue, transfer learning is exercised on pre-trained models. However, the models may lose their classification abilities on the original datasets when transfer learning is applied. To solve this problem, we use learning without forgetting (LwF), which trains the network with a new task but keeps the network’s preexisting abilities intact. Results In this study, we implement transfer learning on pre-trained models such as VGG16, InceptionV3, and Xception, which allow us to work with a smaller dataset and lessen the computational complexity without degrading accuracy. Of all the models, Xception excelled with 98.72% accuracy. We tested the performance of the proposed models with and without LwF. Without LwF, among all the proposed models, Xception gave an accuracy of 79.23% on a new task (BowFire dataset). While using LwF, Xception gave an accuracy of 91.41% for the BowFire dataset and 96.89% for the original dataset. We find that fine-tuning the new task with LwF performed comparatively well on the original dataset. Conclusion Based on the experimental findings, it is found that the proposed models outperform the current state-of-the-art methods. We also show that LwF can successfully categorize novel and unseen datasets.

Forest fire and smoke detection using deep learning-based learning without forgetting

Forest fire disasters are recently getting lots of attention due to climate change globally. Globally, climate changes are rapidly changing the fire patterns on Earth. Effective fire management requires accurate information about the fire occurrence, its spread, and impact on the environment. Prediction of fire activities in the forest guides the authorities to make optimal, efficient, and sound decisions in fire management. This paper aims to summarize recent trends in the forest fire events prediction, detection, spread rate, and mapping of the burned areas. Furthermore, fire emissions in terms of smoke also put the Earth's public health and ecological system at greater risk.

Role of Machine Learning Algorithms in Forest Fire Management: A Literature Review

The intensity and frequency of bushfires have increased significantly, destroying property and living species in recent years. Presently, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology advancements are becoming increasingly popular in bushfire management systems because of their fundamental characteristics, such as manoeuvrability, autonomy, ease of deployment, and low cost. UAVs with remote-sensing capabilities are used with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep-learning algorithms to detect fire regions, make predictions, make decisions, and optimize fire-monitoring tasks. Moreover, UAVs equipped with various advanced sensors, including LIDAR, visual, infrared (IR), and monocular cameras, have been used to monitor bushfires due to their potential to provide new approaches and research opportunities. This review focuses on the use of UAVs in bushfire management for fire detection, fire prediction, autonomous navigation, obstacle avoidance, and search and rescue to improve the accuracy of fire prediction and minimize their impacts on people and nature. The objective of this paper is to provide valuable information on various UAV-based bushfire management systems and machine-learning approaches to predict and effectively respond to bushfires in inaccessible areas using intelligent autonomous UAVs. This paper aims to assemble information about the use of UAVs in bushfire management and to examine the benefits and limitations of existing techniques of UAVs related to bushfire handling. However, we conclude that, despite the potential benefits of UAVs for bushfire management, there are shortcomings in accuracy, and solutions need to be optimized for effective bushfire management.

Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Bushfire Management: Challenges and Opportunities

Forest fires are the main cause of desertification, and they have a disastrous impact on agricultural and forest ecosystems. Modern fire detection and warning systems rely on several techniques: satellite monitoring, sensor networks, image processing, data fusion, etc. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms have been applied to fire recognition systems, enhancing their efficiency and reliability. However, these devices usually need constant data transmission along with a proper amount of computing power, entailing high costs and energy consumption. This paper presents the prototype of a Video Surveillance Unit (VSU) for recognising and signalling the presence of forest fires by exploiting two embedded Machine Learning (ML) algorithms running on a low power device. The ML models take audio samples and images as their respective inputs, allowing for timely fire detection. The main result is that while the performances of the two models are comparable when they work independently, their joint usage according to the proposed methodology provides a higher accuracy, precision, recall and F1 score (96.15%, 92.30%, 100.00%, and 96.00%, respectively). Eventually, each event is remotely signalled by making use of the Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) protocol to ensure that the personnel in charge are able to operate promptly.
