In this innovative scientific world, the demand for sustainable energy is increasing due to the declining demand for fossil fuels. Efforts have been accelerated to create renewable energy storage system to produce an eco-friendly, affordable energy efficiency. Designing materials having novel electrodes with controlled structure and composition is a big challenge for energy storage applications. Hybrid supercapacitor with improved efficiency in energy density devoid of varying the efficiency in power density has been developed in latest years. Quaternary metal oxides and sulfides have attracted considerable attention in this field, where many methods have been used to improve its performance. This review presents an overview on supercapacitors, their prehistoric developments, principles, fundamentals of charge storage working mechanisms, essential components, and their respective classifications. This review also focusesan overview on high-performing supercapacitors, ongoing research activities and its examples, with specific emphasis made on the process and improvements in the novel quaternary metal oxides and sulphides as active electrodes, which itself necessary measure towards nanoscale supercapacitors preparation. Based on various recent reports on suitable materials for supercapacitor applications, novel quaternary metal oxides and sulphides as electrodes seem to hold the key in improving energy conversion and storage systems and play a pivot role in eliminating the challenges confronted with carbon materials. Basic techniques and analytical methods for distinguishing capacitive and battery like behaviours of the supercapacitor electrode materials have also been outlined. In addition, an overall guideline has been emphasized in opting a suitable selective material for the state-of-the-art of high performing supercapacitors. 

A comprehensive review on novel quaternary metal oxide and sulphide electrode materials for supercapacitor: Origin, fundamentals, present perspectives and future aspects

Energy, water, and clean air constitute the fundamental necessities for human survival, and these resources are deeply interconnected. The detrimental effects of modern lifestyle activities and increasing energy requirements have led to amplified use of fossil fuels. This situation is further exacerbated by the improper disposal of substantial amounts of biomass waste, especially in developing nations. However, there is an innovative solution that can address these pressing issues - the carbonization process, which transforms biomass waste into valuable advanced materials. Among the extraordinary materials generated through this procedure are porous activated carbons derived from diverse forms of biomass. Our discussion has explored various biomass sources for activated carbon and their corresponding electrochemical characteristics. Within the realm of energy storage applications, we have delved into the utilization of bio sources including waste tyre, wood, lotus husk, banana peels, bamboo waste, green tea waste, datura, and pineapple leaves in the form of activated carbons. These activated carbons possess remarkable energy storage capabilities in supercapacitors, with reported specific capacitances reaching an impressive value 1400 F/g. Furthermore, we have highlighted the functionalities of supercapacitors and batteries, as well as the distinct roles played by their individual components in energy storage. This all-inclusive assessment not only summarizes the most recent advancements in biomass-derived activated carbon but also underscores its pivotal role in storing energy. Moreover, the assessment delves into the key factors that influence the efficiency of biomass-derived activated carbon in these specific applications, perfectly catering to the requirements of future demands. 

Waste biomass-derived activated carbons for various energy storage device applications: A review

Advancements in wearable technologies in the past few years have influenced the fabrication of fiber-based supercapacitors and sensors for next-generation energy-autonomous systems. There has been an increase in research on conductive electrodes on fibers for sensing ability and storing of energy based on their ease of fabrication, stretch and flexible abilities. These replace the conventional rigid devices that limit the flow of air and provide discomfort when used in clothing. Fiber-based sensors are generally fabricated to detect environmental and physiological changes in real-time. They are mostly fabricated for use as temperature, photo, chemical, and tactile sensors using different applications, and materials. A variety of wearable physical, chemical, biological, and optical sensors that have been described as self-powered or energy-autonomous in recent years rely on these technologies, as well as energy generators, electrochemical energy storage (EES) systems, wireless power technologies, self-powered sensors, and hybrid energy systems that combine energy generators and electrochemical energy storage. This paper highlights a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in fiber-based and sensors for supercapacitors energy-autonomous systems. The paper further highlights fiber-based material properties, such as lightweight, flexibility, high surface area, and their impact on energy density and stability. The paper also discusses the various fabrication methods for fiber-based supercapacitors and sensors, including electrospinning, dip-coating, and self-assembly. Finally, the paper elucidates future directions of fiber-based sensors and supercapacitors for electrochemical energy storage and visa vis sustainable production. 

A review of fiber-based supercapacitors and sensors for energy-autonomous systems

Facing the requirements of energy conversion and storage, the future design of supercapacitors (SC) should achieve higher energy and power densities, which requires SC to have lower internal resistance to realize the best electrochemical performance. Therefore, exploring different measures to reduce the system's internal resistance is crucial for the future development of SC. In this paper, based on the composition of SC and the diffusion process of ions in SC, some effective strategies to reduce the internal resistance are discussed by analyzing the composition and cause of internal resistance of SC. Including the interface engineering between components and the optimization design method of electrodes, electrolytes, and diaphragms to realize the rapid transport of ions at the interface and inside the components are discussed. At the same time, the technical challenges, and future prospects of the strategy to reduce internal resistance in SC design are prospected from different perspectives. This review can provide fresh ideas and directions for the future development of SCs with lower internal resistance and higher performance.

Non-conventional energy storage devices such as batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells are finding more applications due to increasing environmental concerns for energy distribution and storage. Supercapacitors charge very fast and have higher energy density than a conventional capacitor and higher power density than batteries. A lot of research is being done to improve the efficiency and performance of supercapacitors by making the right choice for electrodes, electrolytes, separators, and current collectors. Among all the components, electrolytes serve the purpose of balancing charge in supercapacitor and provide necessary ions to form an electrical connection between electrodes. The electrolyte materials used in supercapacitor can be classified as organic, aqueous, ionic liquids, solid-state, and redox-active electrolytes and are chosen according to their properties, ultimate applications, and physical state of the supercapacitor. This chapter explains the functions of electrolytes, classification of electrolytes, i.e., aqueous electrolytes, organic electrolytes, ionic electrolytes, etc., characteristics required for electrolytes, i.e., conductivity, viscosity, ionic concentration, electrochemical stability, thermal stability, dissociation, toxicity, volatility and flammability, cost, etc., performance of various electrolytes, performance metrics and their relationships, selection of electrolyte material in detail with the support of various material indices using Ashby’s chart.

Electrode store charges, electrolyte provide necessary ions, current collector transfers the charge from the electrode to external circuit, and separator acts as a membrane, which prevents the device from short circuit. The choice of separator material plays a vital role in the design of a supercapacitor. Its main function is to separate cathode and anode electrode material in supercapacitors to prevent short circuit. It is mainly present in the form of a porous membrane in order to provide easy ion transfer. The common material used as separator includes glass fiber, cellulose, ceramic fibers, or polymeric film materials. This chapter mainly describes functions served and characteristics required for separators and its materials, respectively, which are chosen according to those functions. Finally, the selection of separator material is justified with the help of various material indices using Ashby’s chart.
