TL;DR: A spinal cord neuroprosthesis targeting leg motor neurons in real time improves walking and reduces freezing of gait in non-human primate models and in one individual with advanced Parkinson’s disease.

The spinal cord facilitates cerebellar upper limb motor learning and control; inputs from neuromusculoskeletal simulation
Alice Bruel,Ignacio Abadia,Thibault Collin,Icare Sakr,Henri Lorach,Niceto R. Luque,Eduardo Ros,Auke Ijspeert +7 more
TL;DR: This work provides an exploratory framework by integrating biologically plausible cerebellar and SC computational models in a musculoskeletal upper limb control loop, and concludes that the SC facilitates cerebellar motor learning and improves robustness against external perturbations.

Role and modulation of various spinal pathways for human upper limb control in different gravity conditions
Alice Bruel,Lina Bacha,Emma Boehly,Constance De Trogoff,Luca Represa,Gregoire Courtine,Auke Ijspeert +6 more
TL;DR: The results support that the SC can assist gravity compensation and highlight that both strategies of modulation of the supraspinal commands or spinal stretch pathways can be used to control movements in different gravity environments.
Investigation of neural and biomechanical impairments leading to pathological toe and heel gaits using neuromusculoskeletal modelling
Alice Bruel,Salim Ghorbel,Andrea Di Russo,Dimitar Stanev,Stéphane Armand,Grégoire Courtine,Auke Jan Ijspeert +6 more
TL;DR: The authors' simulations suggest that toe walking can be generated by hyperreflexia, whereas muscle and neural weaknesses partially induce heel gait, which suggests an important contribution of active reflex mechanisms to pathological toe gait.
