Introduction Asthma is one of the diseases which has a high prevalence in developed and developing countries. The relationship between asthma and obesity has always been focused by researchers. In this field, adipokines, especially adiponectin and leptin have highly attended by the scientist. The aim of this study was to determine the serum level of adiponectin, leptin and the leptin/adiponectin ratio in asthmatic patients and its relationship with disease severity, lung function and BMI (body mass index). Methods In this cross-sectional study, 90 asthmatic women admitted to the tertiary referral hospital in Kurdistan province – Iran, were examined. First, BMI was measured and then pulmonary function tests were performed in all asthmatics patient. Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and FEV1/FVC, were measured. At the end, blood samples were collected and serum level of adiponectin and leptin were measured by ELISA method. Result Serum leptin and leptin/adiponectin levels correlated positively with asthma severity and BMI ( p  = 0.0001), but there was no correlation between adiponectin level with asthma severity and BMI ( p  > 0.05), also serum leptin and leptin/adiponectin levels inversely correlated with FEV1 and FVC in patient ( p  = 0.0001). Conclusion Asthma is linked with obesity, and there is an association between asthma severity and BMI with serum leptin and leptin/adiponectin levels, but our results do not support a significant role of adiponectin in obesity or asthma.

Introduction: Chronic diseases, due to their prolonged and debilitating nature, dramatically affect patient quality of life. Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the most common chronic diseases. The present study aimed to determine quality of life in patients with allergic rhinitis in Western Iran.
Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 146 patients with AR were enrolled in this study. The required data were collected using the Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ). The questionnaire was distributed among the patients by a physician and analysis of data was carried out by SPSS version 16.
Results: Of the total of 146 AR patients admitted to the clinic, 61% were female and 39% were male; the mean age was 29±10.17. Rhinorrhea (82.2%) was the most common symptom, and moderate to severe intermittent rhinitis (38.4%) was the most common type of the disease. A dramatic reduction in quality of life was observed in 62% of the patients, and the severity of the disease significantly reduced the quality of life (P=0.000).
Conclusion: Allergic rhinitis can adversely affect every aspect of a patient's life, including sleep quality, mood and daily activities.

The impact of allergic rhinitis on quality of life: a study in western Iran

Background Carrying heavy backpacks by school students at growth age can cause irreversible physical harms. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between backpack weight and the incidence of lordosis, kyphosis, scoliosis, and dropped shoulders in elementary school students. Materials and Methods This descriptive-analytical study was conducted in 2015 in Abadan, Iran, and 383 elementary school students were selected and enrolled using the cluster sampling method. Data was collected through the grid method and a demographic questionnaire. The weights of students’ backpacks were recorded, and it was determined whether they were standard or not. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS version 22, descriptive statistics, and the Chi-square test. Results Findings showed that 36.9% of public school students’ backpacks and 55.1% of private school students’ backpacks were non-standard with respect to weight. A significant relationship was also found between non-standard backpack weight and prevalence of dropped shoulders, kyphosis and lordosis (P<0.05) among students. Conclusion Findings showed that non-standard backpack weight increases the prevalence of dropped shoulders, kyphosis and lordosis in elementary school students that can endanger the physical health of the future society; therefore, parents, teachers and health workers must give needed training to students about carrying the bags and backpacks.

Relationship between Backpack Weight and Prevalence of Lordosis, Kyphosis, Scoliosis and Dropped Shoulders in Elementary Students

Background Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease in respiratory system and obesity is another inflammatory disease which incidence rate is increasing. Although, many studies have been conducted on severity of asthma and its relationship with obesity, but different results have been obtained. This study aimed to determine a relationship between asthma severity, Body Mass Index (BMI) and pulmonary function in Kurdistan province, Iran. Materials and Methods: In this cross sectional study 90 asthmatic patients referred to referral hospital in Kurdistan, North West of Iran, were selected by simple random method. BMI was calculated by dividing weight by height.Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) and bronchial-stimulation-test were used for confirmation and investigation of asthma severity. Data were analyzed using SPSS-15 and Chi-square and spearman correlation coefficient tests. Results: Relationship between BMI and severity of asthma (mild, medium and severe) was evaluated, there was a relationship and positive relationship between them (P 0.05), but there was a significant and inverse correlation between waist size and other parameters such as (FEV1, FVC and FEF25-75) (P<0.05). Furthermore, there was a significant and inverse correlation between spirometry indices and Waist-Hip ratio (WHR) (P<0.05) Conclusion It seems that attention to BMI in people with pulmonary diseases including asthma can help improve clinical and physiological conditions of the person.

Association of Body Mass Index with Asthma Severity and Pulmonary Function among Asthmatic Children

Aim: Stem cell factor (SCF) may be associated with inflammatory processes leading to aspirin-induced asthma. This study evaluated the relationship between serum level of SCF and its soluble receptor with aspirin-induced asthma. Methods & materials: Twenty-five patients and 25 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. The concentration of SCF and mast/stem cell growth factor receptor (C-kit) was determined in serum samples. Spirometry and rhinometry were performed to determine the severity of the disease. p < 0.05 were considered significant. Results: The serum levels of SCF and C-kit receptor were significantly higher in the case group. The serum SCF and C-kit level had a significant positive correlation with the severity of asthma, disease duration and nasal obstruction. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that SCF and C-kit receptors have a direct effect on the severity of aspirin-induced asthma.

Introduction Allergic rhinitis, like other allergic diseases, is one of the most common disorders during childhood; this study was conducted to assess and compare the prevalence and severity of allergic rhinitis in children and adolescents living in Kurdistan province. The study was aimed to provide a ground for the identification of likely causes and risk factors of this disorder. Materials and Methods This study was a cross-sectional study. In order to collect data, 4,000 questionnaires were distributed to elementary schools and junior high schools and 3,890 questionnaires were completed; as a result, the survey response rate was 97%. The study was carried out based on International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC): ISAAC questionnaire. After entering the data into SPSS version 13, they were analyzed using logistic regression and Chi- square test. Results Of a total 3,890 people, 29.7% of the subjects in this study reported a history of sneezing or runny nose in the past 12 months; it was reported more in boys in the age group 13-14 years and the difference between the sexes was significant [Odds ratio(OR)=1.35, Confidence interval (CI)]: 1.09-1.67, P < 0.01). Based on physician diagnosis, 9.37% of the subjects were overtaken by allergic rhinitis and it was more prevalent in boys at both educational levels and the difference was statistically significant in subjects aged 13-14 years old (OR=1.44 CI: 1.07-1.94, P <0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of the allergic rhinitis symptoms in children and adolescents living in Kurdistan province is relatively high and it is necessary to carry out extensive studies on its important risk factors.

Evaluation of Prevalence of Allergic Rhinitis Symptoms in Kurdistan, a Western Province in Iran

Background Asthma is one of the most important childhood diseases in developing countries. The prevalence, mortality, and economic burden of the disease have taken a rising trend since 1960, and this increase was more marked in children. The presents study aimed to assess the prevalence of asthma symptoms diagnosed by International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire in Kurdistan province, Western Iran. Materials and Methods In  a  cross-sectional study, to collect the required data 4,000 questionnaires were distributed among student aged 6-7 years and 13-14 years; and the response rate was 97 percent. An ISAAC questionnaire was used to collect data on socio-demographic variables, past health history, and respiratory health. Descriptive statistics, logistic regression and Chi-square test were use for analysis. Result. The prevalence of asthma diagnosed by physician was 3.9%. The prevalence of wheezing was 26.5% in the province in the past 12 months. There was a large difference between different cities in terms of the prevalence rates, so that it varied from 1.7% in Dehgolan to 8% in Sarvabad; hence, the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion There was a relatively high prevalence of wheezing in the past 12 months and previous diagnosis of asthma among the students in Kurdistan province which was higher than that in other similar studies.

The Prevalence of Asthma Symptoms in Elementary and Middle School Students in Kurdistan Province, the West of Iran

Background Atopic dermatitis (AD), often called eczema or atopic eczema is a very common skin disease; AD looks different in infants, children, and adults. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of the disease in Kurdistan province. Materials and Methods Cross-sectional study using written questionnaires ISAAC where 4,000 students in two age groups 76 and 14 -13 years in the province were using multi-stage sampling was carried out so that the first two floors rural and urban communities in every city and in every school pupil samples were selected based on 8-digit code. Results The prevalence of itchy rashes in the past 6 months, itchy rashes in the past 12 months and rashes at flexural areas were 7.5%, 8.9%, and 10.3%, respectively; the prevalence was higher in 13-14 years old than 6-7 years old and was higher in boys than in girls(Odds Ratio (OR)=1.44, Confidence interval (CI)= 1.49-2, P <0.001). Conclusion The prevalence of itchy rashes in the past 12 month was 8.9% and it was more prevalent in boys than the girls were and in age group 13-14 years old was higher than in 6-7 years old.
