Different manufacturing processes can be utilized to fabricate light-weight high-strength materials for their applications in a wide spectrum of industries such as aerospace, automotive and biomedical sectors among which accumulative roll bonding (ARB) is a promising severe plastic deformation (SPD) method capable of creating ultrafine grains (UFG) in the final microstructure. The present review discusses recent advancements in the ARB process starting with the ARB basics, intricacies of the underlying mechanisms and physics, different materials, surface and rolling parameters, and finally its key effects on different properties such as strength, ductility, fatigue, toughness, superplasticity, tribology and thermal characteristics. Moreover, results of recent computational investigations have also been briefed towards the end. It is believed that ARB processing is an emerging area with tremendous opportunities in the industrial sector and ample potential in tailoring microstructures for high-performance materials.

Accumulative Roll Bonding—A Review

This paper present experimental study on improving mechanical properties of Al and Al-xSiC nanocomposites (x = 1, 2 and 4%) synthesized by Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) technique. SEM, EDX and XRD analysis was used to characterize the structural changes in the manufactured materials while tensile and microhardness tests were used to characterize their mechanical properties. Homogeneous distribution of SiC nanoparticles was achieved after five ARB cycles. A significant strength improvement was achieved for processed Al and Al-SiC nanocomposites after five ARB cycles due to grain refinement, grain misorientation and SiC strengthening. The grain refinement and grain misorientation contributed the strength improvement by 161% and 46%, respectively, while the addition of 1% SiC nanopartciles contributed by 78% which is increased to 101% for 4% SiC. The ductility is reduced after the zero ARB cycle however it increased with increasing the number of ARB cycles reaching 8.2 and 5.8% for Al and Al-4% SiC nanocomposites, respectively, after 5 ARB cycles. The fracture shape in the ARBed samples is a combination of necking and shearing with a tendency to shearing shape for Al-SiC nanocomposites.

An alternative method for manufacturing Al/B4C/SiC hybrid composite strips by cross accumulative roll bonding (CARB) process

Aluminium 6061T6 is reinforced with naturally available rock dust particles to fabricate low cost aluminium rock dust composite through powder metallurgy technique. Reinforcement ratio was varied from 0% to 50% whereas size of the particles was kept constant as 20 μm. Mixed powders were compacted at three different pressures from 100 to 200 MPa. Al2O3 ceramic coating was given over the novel composite material by Type III Sulphuric acid hard coating method. Developed composites were tested for microstructure, micro-hardness and wear resistance. SEM micrograph confirms uniform distribution of reinforcement in matrix and a fine ceramic hard coating is observed through optical microscopic images. Micro-hardness increases as reinforcement level increases up to 10%. Wear properties were analysed using pin on disc setup without lubricant and by maintaining three parameters viz load, sliding velocity and sliding distance being unchanged. It was found that composite with 10% rock dust gives better wear resistance than any other compositions. Also incrementing figure is notified for hardness and subsequently wear resisting property too when compacting pressure gets increased. Coated sample exhibits better performance than uncoated composite samples at all compositions and at different levels of compacting pressure.
