Power loss minimization and voltage stability improvement are important areas of power systems due to existing transmission line contingency, financial loss of utility and power system blackouts. Optimal allocation (i.e. siting and sizing) of Distributed Generation (DG) is one of the best ways to strengthen the efficiency of power system among capacitor placement and network reconfiguration. Power system operators and researchers put forward their efforts to solve the distribution system problem related to power loss, energy loss, voltage profile, and voltage stability based on optimal DG allocation. Furthermore, optimal DG allocation secures distribution system from unwanted events and allows the operator to run the system in islanding mode. In this paper a comprehensive study is carried out for optimum DG placement considering minimization of power/energy losses, enhancement of voltage stability, and improvement of voltage profile. An attempt has been made to summarize the existing approaches and present a detailed discussion which can help the energy planners in deciding which objective and planning factors need more attention for optimum DG allocation for a given location or in a given scenario.

This paper presents a comprehensive survey on application of various conventional, optimization and artificial intelligence (AI) based computational techniques for impact assessment of optimally placed and coordinated control of distributed generations (DGs) and flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) controllers in power systems (PSs). This review work is presented from the viewpoint of different performance criterion enhancement of PSs such as minimization of active and reactive power losses and reduction of cost of system, more flexible operation and control, increase overall system energy efficiency, increase reliability of system, relieved transmission and distribution congestion, enhance power quality (PQ) of system, improve the voltage profile (VP), increase the loadability of systems, increase available power transfer capacity (APTC) of system, enhance PS stability, reduce PS oscillations, improve environmental GHG conditions and provide the reactive power support in emergency case such as under fault, sudden change in field excitation of alternators or load increase in PSs. This paper also presents the current status of the various conventional, optimization, and AI computational techniques for optimally placed and coordinated control of DG and FACTS controllers in PSs for enhancement of PSs performance parameters. Authors strongly believe that this survey will be very much useful to the researchers, scientific engineers, industrial persons working in this area to find out the relevant references and current state of the art.

A survey on impact assessment of DG and FACTS controllers in power systems

The problem of optimal placement and sizing (OPS) of renewable distributed generation (RDG) is followed by numerous technical, economical, geographical, and ecological constraints. In this paper, it is investigated from two viewpoints, namely the simultaneous minimization of total energy loss of a distribution network and the maximization of profit for RDG owner. The stochastic nature of RDG such as the wind turbine and photovoltaic generation is accounted using suitable probabilistic models. To solve this problem, a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm is proposed, which is a combination of the phasor particle swarm optimization and the gravitational search algorithm. The proposed algorithm is tested on an IEEE 69-bus system for several cases in two scenarios. The results obtained by the hybrid algorithm shows that it provides high-quality solution for all cases considered and has better performances for solving the OPS problem compared to other metaheuristic population-based techniques.

Optimal Placement and Sizing of Renewable Distributed Generation Using Hybrid Metaheuristic Algorithm

The integration of the various types of distributed generators in low-voltage (LV) distribution networks becomes a great concern, especially the rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems. The negative impacts of the rooftop PVs on the distribution feeder buses' voltage include voltage rise and voltage unbalance (VU). Such a voltage-violation condition depends mainly on the PVs ratings and the network unbalance percentage. This study presents a review for different techniques used to mitigate the voltage violation resulting from PVs integration in a typical three-phase four-wire LV distribution network case study. The voltage-violation mitigation techniques studied in this study are enhancement of the feeder, on-load tap changer, demand-side management, active power curtailment, a reactive power control, static transfer switch, energy storage systems and hybrid strategies. The LV distribution network case study was modelled based on constant power model method using MATLAB software environment. The simulation results demonstrate both voltage regulation and alleviating VU capabilities of each technique.
