A system for monitoring and reporting medical information includes a stand-alone monitor for storing data records comprising measured values and time stamps and for transmitting the records to a remote reporting unit over a communication system. The remote reporting unit includes a relational data base that is updated when records are down-loaded from the monitor; a report generator for generating chronological graphs of the measured values for a particular patient; and a report transmitting unit for transmitting reports to a requesting health care provider.

A device for accurately delivering aerosolized doses of a medicament disperses a measured amount of drug in a measured volume of carrier gas and transfers the resulting aerosol to a chamber prior to inhalation by a patient. The chamber is filled efficiently with the aerosol, and inhalation by the patient draws the aerosol dose into the lungs. This is followed by the inhalation of atmospheric air that will push the initial dose well into the lung interiors. The apparatus optimally includes a dose regulator, a counter, a clock, a dose memory and a signal to indicate when a dose is ready for inhalation. Optimal chamber designs are disclosed.

Method and device for delivering aerosolized medicaments

Apparatus and methods for delivering an amount of aerosolized medicine for inspiration by a patient in response to the occurrence of appropriate delivery point or points in the patient's detected breath flow. The aerosol medication may be administered as one or more pulses having a pulse width, shape, and frequency that will maximize the respirable fraction of the aerosolized compound being administered. The delivery point or points may be predetermined or determined from a prior inspiratory flow for depositing the selected medication at one or more desired locations in the patient's airway. Determined delivery points are recursively lowered for each inspiratory flow that does not satisfy one of the predetermined and previously lowered threshold. Changes in the patient's breath flow patterns during the course of an aerosolized medication inspiration therapy program may be detected and used to adjust the controlled amount of medication to be delivered in a given administration and/or to inform the patient of the patient's condition or change in condition. The device also may contain a library of administration protocols or operating parameters for different medications and a means for identifying from the canister the medicinal contents of the canister for customizing operation of the apparatus.

Delivery of aerosol medications for inspiration

A dry powder medecine inhaler has an impeller (31) non-concentrically disposed in a mixing chamber (25). A motor spins the impeller at high speed. A plunger (106) introduces a dose of powdered medecine into the chamber so that all powder particles are available for intermixing disaggregation and comminution. An aperture (51) receives a first stream of air and passes it towards the mouthpiece for inhalation by the user. A wall (11) has at least one aperture (59) for diverting a portion of a main air stream into the aerosolizing chamber to mix with the particles to form a fine, low density, low velocity, dry mist of powdered medecine for inhalation by the user.

Dry powder inhaler

A nebulizer for efficiently and reliably delivering aerosolized fluid to an inhaling patient is disclosed. The nebulizer includes a fluid channel air inlet and fluid channel air inlet valve responsive to either a manual force external of the nebulizer, or a patient's breathing, to begin the nebulization process. Also provided is a method of providing nebulization including the steps of moving a fluid channel air inlet valve against a fluid channel air inlet so that a negative pressure may build up over the fluid in the fluid channel to draw fluid from the fluid reservoir and begin nebulization during inhalation.

Nebulizer apparatus and method

A metered dose inhaler is provided for inhalation of asthmatic medication. An upright cylindrical air chamber has structure at the top for receiving a pressurized canister of asthmatic medication and for conducting metered doses thereof into the air chamber. A one way valve is provided at the bottom of the air chamber to admit air but to preclude escape of mist. A mouthpipe is provided at the top of the chamber on one side thereof for insertion in a patient's mouth. A deflectable diaphragm is provided in cooperation with the mouthpipe so that when a patient inhales the diaphragm deflects to permit the mist in the air chamber to be inhaled, air entering the one way valve of the bottom of the air chamber to supplant the mist. When the patient exhales the diaphragm closes, and the exhaled air is bypassed to the outside.

Metered dose inhaler

A pediatric medication inhaler is provided having an entering end and an exit end. A commercial medication dispenser is secured in the entering end, and a one-way valve (30,44) is incorporated between the entering end and the exit end permitting air and medication flow from the entering end to the exit end, but preventing flow in the opposite direction. An adapter (20) is secured to the exit end and is made of pliable foam plastic material contoured and adapted to conform to an infant's face. A whistle (72) is provided in the adapter to provide an audible signal that the infant is breathing properly.

Pediatric asthmatic medication inhaler

A kidney stone disintegrating system includes a computer-controlled aiming system. The disintegrating system includes a reflector containing water through which the reflector is coupled to a living body having a kidney stone. The reflector is a portion of an ellipsoid and a spark gap generator is located at one focus of the ellipsoid. An electrical energy source is connected to the spark gap generator for generating a spark which in turn generates a shock wave in the fluid. Three motors are connected to the reflector for moving it in respectively X-axis, Y-axis and Z-axis directions to locate the reflector so that the kidney stone lies at the second focus point thereof. A pair of ultrasound transducers are carried by an articulated support comprising a plurality of pivotally interconnected arms. Precision potentiometers are provided between the arms to indicate the relative positions thereof, and electrical potentials from the potentiometers are connected to a computer. The signals and the computer are connected to a monitor having a screen to display the kidney stone, and particularly the position thereof as determined by the two transducers. The computer is connected to the three motors to position the reflector in accordance with the positions of the transducers to locate the reflector with the second focus point coinciding with the kidney stone. Controls are provided for causing generation of a spark with the resulting shock wave focused on the kidney stone to destroy the kidney stone.
