Nowadays, there is increasing concern in transportation engineering about the use of techniques less harmful to the environment and also about road safety. Heterogeneous photocatalysis based on the application of semiconductor materials onto asphalt mixtures is a promising technology because it can mitigate air pollution and road accidents. The functionalized asphalt mixtures with photocatalytic capability can degrade pollutants, such as damaging gases and oil/grease adsorbed on their surface, from specific reactions triggered by sunlight photons, providing significant environmental and social benefits. In this article, a review of photocatalysis applied in asphalt mixtures is presented. The most important characteristics related to the functionalization of asphalt mixtures for photocatalytic applications and their corresponding characterization are presented, and the achieved main results are also discussed.

Smart, photocatalytic and self-cleaning asphalt mixtures: a literature review

The main objective of RILEM TC LHS-277 “Specifications for testing and evaluation of lime-based repair materials for historic Structures” is the revision, adaption and, when necessary proposal, of the test methods to accurately study lime-based binding systems and mixtures, such as mortars and grouts. The empiric use of the lime-based composites and the predominant employ of cement in the field of Civil Engineering have led to the widespread application of test methods developed for cement-based composites to test the former. However, the clear differences in composition and performance between modern cement binders and lime-based materials would advise to explore specific test methods for the latter. To undertake this task the previous knowledge on the mechanisms of setting and hardening of these binders must be revised, arranged and synthesized. Processes such as drying, carbonation, hydration and pozzolanic reaction may occur during the setting and hardening of lime-based mortars and competition between them cannot be underestimated. With the aim of underpinning the revision and proposal of test methods for lime-based systems, this review paper reports a comprehensive study of the mechanisms of setting and hardening of these binders, considering the variability of the composition, which includes pure air lime as well as lime with hydraulic properties, lime-cement and lime-pozzolan systems.

Using TiO2 nanoparticles as a SO2 catalyst in cement mortars

As one of the main materials for grouting repair, the workability of natural hydraulic lime (NHL) has been concerned widely. In this paper, effects of polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) on rheological properties and early hydration of natural hydraulic lime (NHL2) and their correlations were systematically investigated. Results show that the fluidity of NHL2 paste improves significantly and tends to a stable state at a certain dosage in the presence of PCE. It is found that PCE makes the flocculated structures in paste disassemble and produces more small particles. The results can lead to a decrease in yield stress and plastic viscosity, further improving rheological properties. The retardation effect of PCE on NHL2 hydration can depress the crystallization and early formation of calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 and calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H). The effect can reduce water consumption during mixing, which has a positive influence on rheological properties.

The construction sector is currently challenged by environmental concerns, reducing energy consumption, and optimising the use of raw materials, hence the need to use new technologies and materials that have a better lifecycle performance. Recycling end-of-life materials or using industrial by-products is a solution in which resources are used efficiently. The considerable contribution of the production of hydraulic lime mortars to the environment, especially in relation to carbon dioxide emissions, is noteworthy. The study and use of nanotechnology and by-products, such as microgranulated corks, are solutions for more sustainable options, as they are more durable, and their properties are similar to conventional mortars. In this study, we explored the environmental benefits of mortars; to this end, we added different percentages of nano-TiO2 and microgranulated cork that can be used in the production of mortars based on hydraulic lime but with antifungal properties. With the analysed results, we verified that these two additives, besides presenting benefits regarding antifungal properties, are viable alternatives to chemical biocides and sustainable options for the mortar industry to improve its environmental performance. The best environmental performance is obtained with mortar with 2% microgranulated cork.
