TL;DR: The limiting nutrient for freshwater phytoplankton productivity can vary within and between geographic regions as mentioned in this paper, and understanding how local (i.e., lake and catchment) and regional (e.g., multiple catchments) can be used to understand how local and regional phyto-cycled organisms perform.

Dynamic Regulation of Extracellular Superoxide Production by the Coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi (CCMP 374).
TL;DR: Cell-normalized extracellular O2− production was the highest under presumably low-stress conditions during active proliferation and inversely related to cell density during exponential growth phase, suggesting a connection with photosynthetic processes.
