Abstract In this introduction, I summarize the different contributions presented by alumni and faculty about patient care during the alumni meeting on the tenth anniversary of the inauguration of the Advanced Oncology study programme of the University of Ulm. The chapters represent the diversity of the different authors, being from low-income, middle-income (LMICs) as well as high-income countries (HICs), considering specific aspects of the entire spectrum of cancer care. What unifies them is their drive to improve patient care in their areas of expertise, with the means they have at hand and the skillset they acquired during their professional and educational journeys, frequently taking them from different parts of the globe to other ones. The task at hand, to reduce cancer-related morbidity and mortality, remains, as do the cornerstones of cancer control like primary prevention, screening and early treatment. Therefore, the interruptive force of the COVID-19 pandemic should be acknowledged, and measures must be implemented to prevent further delays in care for patients with cancers. 

Improving Patient Care

Abstract People with Disabilities (PwDs) suffer and are susceptible to social inequalities, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. In West Africa, these are influenced by how services geared towards PwDs are administered. This study explores the government policies implemented in West Africa during the Covid-19 pandemic and their impact on PwDs in line with the SDGs with disability targets. Thematic analysis was adopted to analyze eighty-one (81) documents, including legislation, reports and official documents that communicated measures taken in response to Covid-19 and SDGs with disability targets. The study found that various governments outlined pragmatic steps to address the needs of PwDs. It was unraveled that the policies and recommendations that the governments have published on disability inclusiveness in response to Covid-19 did not reflected in the lives PwDs. This is evident based on the difficulty PwDs have to go through to access all the available benefits. It takes a while to see such policies and recommendations reflected in the lives of PwDs. Measuring the expected improvements in the lives of PwDs relative to the SGD’s attainment can not happen overnight. This study is the first of its kind in West Africa and urges various governments to pay close attention to their policies to improve their policies toward PwDs. The study recognizes governments’ vital role in ensuring that PwDs are better off, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the government needs to provide adequate education on how PwDs will readily access policies to better their lives.

Impact of the COVID-19 Outbreak on Cancer Staging in Brazil

The aim of this study was to identify the difficulties faced and the strategies used in home management by caregivers of patients undergoing treatment for hematological malignancies, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a qualitative study, carried out with 20 caregivers in a reference hospital in oncology. Data were analyzed using Content Analysis, supported by Bardin's theoretical framework. Most respondents were female, married, with at least high school education and living in the Southeast region. In addition, 70.0% were spouses or children, who had taken care of the patient continuously for less than two years, but had no training in the health area. From the content analysis of the interviews, three categories emerged: difficulties related to care; difficulties related to access; and coping strategies. Ignorance of management in the face of the changes imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic in the routine care of patients with hematological neoplasia is part of the caregiver's daily life. The main coping strategies used are related to family and spiritual support. Therefore, it is necessary to develop educational strategies to improve the care provided and empower the family to solve these problems.

Quality cancer care is efficient, accessible, coordinated, and evidence-based. Recognizing the necessary key components, development of pathways and guidelines to incorporate these key domains, and finally respectful adaptation to cultural differences can ensure that cancer care globally is of the highest quality. This quality care should be judged not only on how it optimizes health outcomes for patients, but also its impact on the care providers and the global community. 

Impact of Medical Oncology–Focused Quality Programs on Cancer Care Around the World

This report from ASCO's International Quality Steering Group summarizes early learnings on how the COVID-19 pandemic and its stresses have disproportionately affected cancer care delivery and its delivery systems across the world. This article shares perspectives from eight different countries, including Austria, Brazil, Ghana, Honduras, Ireland, the Philippines, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates, which provide insight to their unique issues, challenges, and barriers to quality improvement in cancer care during the pandemic. These perspectives shed light on some key recommendations applicable on a global scale and focus on access to care, importance of expanding and developing new treatments for both COVID-19 and cancer, access to telemedicine, collecting and using COVID-19 and cancer registry data, establishing measures and guidelines to further enhance quality of care, and expanding communication among governments, health care systems, and health care providers. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer care and quality improvement has been and will continue to be felt across the globe, but this report aims to share these experiences and learnings and to assist ASCO's international members and our global fight against the pandemic and cancer.
