As presented in Annenkov&Shrira (2009), when a surface gravity wave field is subjected to an abrupt perturbation of external forcing, its spectrum evolves on a ``fast'' dynamic time scale of $O(\varepsilon^{-2})$, with $\varepsilon$ a measure of wave steepness. This observation poses a challenge to wave turbulence theory that predicts an evolution with a kinetic time scale of $O(\varepsilon^{-4})$. We revisit this unresolved problem by studying the same situation in the context of a one-dimensional Majda-McLaughlin-Tabak (MMT) equation with gravity wave dispersion relation. Our results show that the kinetic and dynamic time scales can both be realised, with the former and latter occurring for weaker and stronger forcing perturbations, respectively. The transition between the two regimes corresponds to a critical forcing perturbation, with which the spectral evolution time scale drops to the same order as the linear wave period (of some representative mode). Such fast spectral evolution is mainly induced by a far-from-stationary state after a sufficiently strong forcing perturbation is applied. We further develop a set-based interaction analysis to show that the inertial-range modal evolution in the studied cases is dominated by their (mostly non-local) interactions with the low-wavenumber ``condensate'' induced by the forcing perturbation. The results obtained in this work should be considered to provide significant insight into the original gravity wave problem.

On the time scales of spectral evolution of nonlinear waves

FarView is an early-stage concept for a large, low-frequency radio observatory, manufactured in-situ on the lunar far side using metals extracted from the lunar regolith. It consists of 100,000 dipole antennas in compact subarrays distributed over a large area but with empty space between subarrays in a core-halo structure. FarView covers a total area of ~200 km2, has a dense core within the inner ~36 km2, and a ~power-law falloff of antenna density out to ~14 km from the center. With this design, it is relatively easy to identify multiple viable build sites on the lunar far side. The science case for FarView emphasizes the unique capabilities to probe the unexplored Cosmic Dark Ages - identified by the 2020 Astrophysics Decadal Survey as the discovery area for cosmology. FarView will deliver power spectra and tomographic maps tracing the evolution of the Universe from before the birth of the first stars to the beginning of Cosmic Dawn, and potentially provide unique insights into dark matter, early dark energy, neutrino masses, and the physics of inflation. What makes FarView feasible and affordable in the timeframe of the 2030s is that it is manufactured in-situ, utilizing space industrial technologies. This in-situ manufacturing architecture utilizes Earth-built equipment that is transported to the lunar surface to extract metals from the regolith and will use those metals to manufacture most of the array components: dipole antennas, power lines, and silicon solar cell power systems. This approach also enables a long functional lifetime, by permitting servicing and repair of the observatory. The full 100,000 dipole FarView observatory will take 4 - 8 years to build, depending on the realized performance of the manufacturing elements and the lunar delivery scenario.

Next generation aperture arrays are expected to consist of hundreds to thousands of antenna elements with substantial digital signal processing to handle large operating bandwidths of a few tens to hundreds ofMHz. Conventionally, FX correlators are used as the primary signal processing unit of the interferometer. These correlators have computational costs that scale as O(N2) for large arrays. An alternative imaging approach is implemented in the E-field Parallel Imaging Correlator (EPIC) that was recently deployed on the Long Wavelength Array station at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (LWA-SV) in New Mexico. EPIC uses a novel architecture that produces electric field or intensity images of the sky at the angular resolution of the array with full or partial polarization and the full spectral resolution of the channelizer. By eliminating the intermediate cross-correlation data products, the computational costs can be significantly lowered in comparison to a conventional FX or XF correlator from O(N2) to O(N log N) for dense (but otherwise arbitrary) array layouts. EPIC can also lower the output data rates by directly yielding polarimetric image products for science analysis. We have optimized EPIC and have now commissioned it at LWA-SV as a commensal all-sky imaging back-end that can potentially detect and localize sources of impulsive radio emission on millisecond timescales. In this article, we review the architecture of EPIC, describe code optimizations that improve performance, and present initial validations from commissioning observations. Comparisons between EPICmeasurements and simultaneous beam-formed observations of bright sources show spectral-temporal structures in good agreement.

Optimization and Commissioning of the EPIC Commensal Radio Transient Imager for the Long Wavelength Array

We develop a theory of turbulence of weak random gravity waves on surface of deep water in which the main nonlinear process at high-frequency part of the spectrum is a nonlocal interaction with a strong low-frequency component. The latter component, which we call ``condensate", may appear in the system due to, e.g., the finite size effects which lead to an energy stagnation at waves whose wavelength is comparable to the size of the retaining flume. Our theory assumes the form of a linear spectral diffusion equation. We find a scaling solution of this equation and propose it as a possible explanation of recent numerical results for the gravity wave spectrum.
