While critical thinking has been intimately associated with adult education, there is not always a consensus as to its meaning and how to develop it in adult learners. After analysing the concept of critical thinking, a model is suggested consisting of five phases, which attempts to incorporate aspects of problem solving and creative thinking. Next, the development of critical thinking and the central role it plays in adult education are explored. It is concluded that issues surrounding the development of critical thinking may be an important key to developing an understanding of the field of adult education.

Critical Thinking and Adult Education: A Conceptual Model for Developing Critical Thinking in Adult Learners.

This paper presents a framework for critical reflection that teacher educators can employ to analyze prospective teachers’ reflection and support their transformative learning. The author argues that teacher educators should not only pay attention to the cognitive processes of prospective teachers (how they reflect), but also the content of their thinking (what they reflect on), the goals of their thinking (why they reflect), and how their thinking influences their teaching practice in the classroom (what transformative learning they experience). The paper provides implications for both teacher education and teacher research.

Critical Reflection as a Framework for Transformative Learning in Teacher Education.

The concept of reflective thinking as a precursor for incorporating critical thinking has been not been adequately researched. Most research has not given any effective strategies on how to incorporate these two concepts. There is a constant need to incorporate critical thinking into the classroom without much success. This study will attempt to show a link between reflective thinking and its ability to stimulate critical thinking. Teachers often perceive that critical thinking skills need to be taught, however research has shown that they may not know how to do this effectively. The use of reflective thinking may be a precursor to stimulating critical thinking in teachers. The research questions are on the reflective thinking skills of teachers and how they perceive themselves and their teaching. In this study a total of 60 participants from institutions of higher learning volunteered to answer a questionnaire to determine the level at which they reflected on their teaching practices as an indicator of their level of critical thinking. It was found that most of the teachers did not reflect deeply on their teaching practices. They did not seem to practice the four learning processes: assumption analysis, contextual awareness, imaginative speculation and reflective scepticism which were indicative of reflection. It would suggest that critical thinking is practised minimally among teachers. Further research need to be carried out on how to bring about reflective practices among teachers and how it would enhance the quality of lessons in terms of critical thinking.

Reflective thinking and teaching practices: a precursor for incorporating critical thinking into the classroom?

This article examines the informal learning of two principal HRD practitioners working at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games construction sites, highlighting tensions between individual experience and the workplace. The article is based on an interpretive study in which findings are “counterpointed” by postmodern and critical perspectives. Key questions include these: Why is informal learning, at this particular moment, an important research focus in HRD? What are the problems of defining informal learning? How does one learn informally, and what affects it? The article concludes by rethinking informal learning and discussing implications for future HRD research and practice.
