We reviewed 272 bird atlases (standardised surveys intended to document the distribution of birds) from around the world. Atlases we located were conducted in 50 countries from six continents with most (82.4%) from Europe and North America. Atlases were mostly run by ornithological societies (67.1%), had amassed at least 27.9 million records of birds over an area roughly 31.4% of the land area of the Earth, and had involved at least 108 000 contributors. They had a modal data collection period of 4 years (some ran over several decades) and varied greatly in scale, covering local areas to entire continents (21 km2 – 10 390 000 km2); atlases that covered larger areas involved more observers and generated more records. Most atlases (88.3%) were constrained to particular seasons, and most of these focussed on the main local breeding period (81.0%). Spatial sampling units ranged from 0.02 km2 (2 ha) to 3092 km2 and temporal units of sampling varied from 20 minutes to several years. Little information is available on the application of data generated by atlases. We focussed on five major atlases for which information was available. We located 97 scientific publications drawing on data from these five major atlases; papers most frequently focussed on bird distribution (26.8%), ecology (20.6%) and land-use planning (17.5%). Atlas books were cited often, 7–31 times per year. Provision of data to third parties from two major atlases (one from Australia and one from Britain and Ireland) was frequent and remarkably similar. Data were requested mostly for environmental impact studies (almost half of all requests), conservation policy and planning (~20%), research (~20%) and other mapping (~13%). Despite the uses we describe, atlas data seem under-utilised.

A review of terrestrial bird atlases of the world and their application

Forest structure and composition have been used to assess the habitat characteristics that determine bird distributions. The patterns of distribution have been shaped by historical and ecological factors that play different roles at both temporal and spatial scales. The objectives of this research were to characterize the habitat of the endangered Military Macaw (Ara militaris) and evaluate the potential distribution of this species based on trends of land use changes in Mexico. We characterized the community structure and floristic composition of 8 forests that are currently used by the Military Macaw for breeding and feeding and compared the results with 6 similar forests characterized in other studies but without historical records of the presence of the Military Macaw. The Military Macaw preferred sites with high diversity of plant species dominated by trees from 4 to 15 m in height and from 5 to 90 cm in diameter at breast height. We identified 236 plant species in the 8 forests with 20 species (8.4%) used for nesting and feeding by the Military Macaw. The floristic composition is important for the presence of the Military Macaw because there were significant differences between forests with and without its presence. The potential area of distribution of the Military Macaw had decreased by 32% and the remnant areas are included in only 8 National Protected Areas. The protected areas of natural forests should be increased to preserve the sites of potential distribution and consequently the habitat of the Military Macaw in Mexico.

Mexican land birds reveal complexity in fine‐scale patterns of endemism

A new highland species of chestnut-capped Arremon brush-finch is described from the Sierra Madre del Sur of central Guerrero. This form, although indistinguishable in external phenotype from adjacent populations to the east in Oaxaca, is dramatically differentiated in mitochondrial DNA sequence characters, and quite unexpectedly is the sister lineage to the very distinct (phenotype and genotype), central-Mexican-endemic A. virenticeps. Nuclear sequence differentiation in the new lineage is more subtle than in mitochondrial DNA, but is on par with that in the well-marked A. virenticeps. The new species is thus distinct from its sister lineage in genotype and phenotype, and clearly distinct from all other forms in genotype; however, it has retained an ancestral external phenotype similar to other members of the broader A. brunneinucha complex.

Effects of Land-Use Modifications in the Potential Distribution of Endemic Bird Species Associated With Tropical Dry Forest in Guerrero, Southern Mexico:

The recent paper by Hume (2002) contains both an error and confusion regarding the publication details of the name Aplonis corvina. The error is that the name should have been written as Aplonis corvina (Kittlitz, 1833), because the species was originally described by Kittlitz as Lampothornis corvina. The confusion relates to the dating: Hume (2002) followed Amadon (1962) in giving the date of publication as 1833, but then referenced the relevant work (the second part of Kittlitz’s Kupfertafeln zur Naturgeschichte der Vogel hereafter Kupfer. Nat. Vog.) as 1832, a date that has also been used by some authors. The Rothschild Library at The Natural History Museum, Tring, has a bound copy of the three published parts (= Hefts) of Kupfer. Nat. Vog. , each preceded by its original title page. The title page of the first part is dated 1832, whereas the second and third parts are both dated 1833. The correct publication date for Aplonis corvina and other taxa described in the second part is thus 1833. In its entirety, Kupfer. Nat. Vog. should be referenced as Kittlitz (1832-33). A further potential source of confusion, avoided by Hume (2002) but for completeness worth mentioning here, is that Kittlitz (1835) also published a more detailed description and illustration of A. corvina in volume 2 of the Memoirs of the Academy of Imperial Sciences, St. Petersburg, the title page of which is imprinted 23 November 1831. However, this “1831” paper in fact was not published until 1835 (imprinted title page of the memoirs) and so does not constitute the type description, despite being referenced by Kittlitz (1833) and clearly intended by him to appear first.
