The present invention concerns friction reducers for use in lubricating oil compositions which comprise certain groups of aromatic compounds, esters, narrow mixtures of base stocks, and/or amorphous polymers such as amorphous olefin copolymers. These compositions can provide substantial reductions in the coefficient of friction and fuel economy improving benefits when admixed to lubricating oils without deleterious effects such as instability, undesirable high viscosities and deposits. In one aspect of the invention, pentaerythritol esters and optionally triol esters are added to lubricating oil compositions to provide reduced friction and improved fuel economy. In a second aspect of the invention, similar results are obtained by adding hydrocarbyl aromatics to a lubricating oil composition containing one or more of Groups II and III base stock. In a third aspect, the invention concerns a lubricating oil composition comprising an amorphous olefin copolymer and one or more of Groups II and III base stocks. In one embodiment, the third aspect also includes one or more of hydrocarbyl aromatics and polyol esters as part of the composition. In a forth aspect, moderate concentrations of hydrocarbyl aromatics are used in a lubricating oil composition comprising paraffinic base oil stocks and preferably a borated polyisobutenyl succinimide ashless dispersant.

Lubricating oil compositions with improved friction properties

Olefins are polymerised in the presence of a solid catalyst component and optionally a cocatalyst. The solid catalyst component is introduced into the polymerisation reactor by suspending the solid component into oil having a viscosity of from 20 to 1500 mPa s. Optionally, the suspension comprises a drag reduction agent dissolved in the oil. The suspension is metered into the polymerisation reactor by using a valveless piston pump.

A system for reducing pressure drop associated with the turbulent flow of asphaltenic crude oil through a conduit. The crude oil has a high asphaltene content and/or a low API gravity. Such reduction in pressure drop is achieved by treating the asphaltenic crude oil with a high molecular weight drag reducing polymer that can have a solubility parameter within about 20 percent of the solubility parameter of the heavy crude oil. The drag reducing polymer can also comprise the residues of monomers having at least one heteroatom.

A process for continuously producing a polymer drag reducing agent (DRA) is described. The process concerns mixing a monomer and a catalyst in at least one continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) to form a mixture. The mixture is continuously injected into a volume continuously formed by a thermoplastic material, such as polyethylene. The thermoplastic material is periodically sealed off to form a temporary container or bag. The monomer is permitted to polymerize in the temporary container to form polymer. In one non-limiting embodiment, the polymerization in the bag takes place within an inert, circulating fluid that accelerates heat transfer. The polymer and the temporary container are then ground together, preferably at non-cryogenic temperatures, to produce a particulate polymer drag reducing agent. In one preferred, non-limiting embodiment, the grinding or pulverizing occurs in the presence of at least one solid organic grinding aid. Finally, the particulate polymer drag reducing agent may be combined with a dispersing fluid.

A composition including an alcohol absorbed polyalphaolefin that functions as a drag reducing agent and a process for the preparation of the drag reducing agent are disclosed. The process includes the steps of contacting alpha olefin monomers with at least one catalyst in a reactant mixture to form a polyalphaolefin. The polyalphaolefin is then contacted with at least one water insoluble alcohol for a period of time to provide an alcohol absorbed polyalphaolefin that is used as an improved drag reducing agent. Processes for reducing drag in a conduit are also disclosed.

The present invention is directed to improved drag reducing agents and methods of forming improved drag reducing agents comprising the steps of isomerizing olefin monomers to form isomerized olefin monomers, polymerizing the isomerized olefin monomers in the presence of at least one catalyst to form a polyolefin drag reducing agent having unexpectedly superior drag reduction properties when combined with liquid hydrocarbons, such as viscous crude oil. Therefore, the drag reducing agents of the present invention may be introduced into conduits, such as pipelines, to increase the flow of the hydrocarbons through the conduit.

A composition including a polyalphaolefin and at least one alfol alcohol that function as drag reducing agent slurries and a process for the preparation of the drag reducing agent slurries are disclosed. The process includes contacting alpha olefin monomers with a catalyst in a reactant mixture to form a polyalphaolefin. The polyalphaolefin is combined with at least one alfol alcohol to form a drag reducing agent slurry. A process for reducing drag in a conduit is also disclosed.

A composition including a polyalphaolefin and at least one alpha olefin monomer partitioning agent that function as drag reducing agents and a process for the preparation of the drag reducing agents are disclosed. The process includes the steps of contacting alpha olefin monomers with at least one catalyst in a reactant mixture to form a polyalphaolefin. The reactant mixture may include at least one alpha olefin partitioning agent or the at least one alpha olefin partitioning agent may be mixed with the polyalphaolefin after polymerization. The alpha olefin monomer partitioning agents are alpha olefin monomers that are solid at ambient temperatures. Preferably, the alpha olefin monomers are selected from the group consisting of C2O-C6O alpha olefin monomers. A process for reducing drag in a conduit is also disclosed.

FIELD: chemistry of polymers, chemical technology. ^ SUBSTANCE: invention relates to compositions comprising poly-alpha-olefin preliminary ground at low temperature and at least one practically water-insoluble and not mixing with water aliphatic alcohol with unbranched chain and acting as nonaqueous suspension reducing the hydraulic resistance to flow. Also, invention describes method for manufacturing such nonaqueous suspensions reducing hydraulic resistance to flow wherein this method involves contact of alpha-olefin monomers with catalyst in reaction mixture to form poly-alpha-olefin wherein the Ziegler-Natt catalyst, namely titanium trichloride, is used as catalyst. Co-catalyst is chosen from group consisting of alkylaluminooxanes, halogenhydrocarbons, diethylaluminum chloride and dibutylaluminum chloride. Realization of the method provides preparing ultrahigh-molecular poly-alpha-olefin showing intrinsic viscosity value at least about 10 deciliters per gram and representing amorphous substance practically no containing crystalline particles. Synthesized ultrahigh-molecular poly-alpha-olefin is ground at low temperature and combined with at least one aliphatic alcohol with unbranched chain that is practically water-insoluble and not mixing with water, and final poly-alpha-olefin reduces hydraulic resistance to flow.
