Systems risk refers to the likelihood that an Information System (IS) is inadequately protected against certain types of damage or loss. While risks are posed by acts of God, hackers and viruses, consideration should also be given to the ‘insider’ threat of dishonest employees, intent on undertaking some form of computer crime. Against this backdrop, a number of researchers have addressed the extent to which security managers are cognizant of the very nature of systems risk. In particular, they note how security practitioners' knowledge of local threats, which form part of such risk, is often fragmented. This shortcoming contributes to situations where risk reducing efforts are often less than effective. Security efforts are further complicated given that the task of managing systems risk requires input from a number of departments including, for example, HR, compliance, IS/IT and physical security. To complement existing research, and also to offer a fresh perspective, this paper addresses systems risk from the offender's perspective. If systems risk entails the likelihood that an IS is inadequately protected, this text considers those conditions, within the organisational context, which offer a criminal opportunity for the offender. To achieve this goal a model known as the ‘Crime-Specific Opportunity Structure’ is advanced. Focusing on the opportunities for computer crime, the model addresses the nature of such opportunities with regards to the organisational context and the threats posed by rogue employees. Drawing on a number of criminological theories, it is believed the model may help inform managers about local threats and, by so doing, enhance safeguard implementation.

This article presents a model that describes the sources of the economic potential of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) The model, initially based on a literature review, was thereafter refined by means of empirical evidence collected in the automotive distribution sector and the banking industry The authors suggest that the economic potential of this new information systems architecture depends on its fundamental characteristics as well as on the individual business models and IT strategies of the companies wishing to use SOA In addition to presenting a comprehensive model, this paper also presents selected examples from the fieldwork that illustrate how SOA can be used to create economic potential in the considered industries
The authors furthermore introduce their current research efforts that are aimed at extending the developed qualitative model by using the identified drivers of SOA’s economic potential as the basis of a quantitative profitability analysis

Towards Understanding the Sources of the Economic Potential of Service-Oriented Architecture: Findings from the Automotive and Banking Industry

The present chapter aims to successfully deal with the needs of information security functions by providing a management tool which links business and information security objectives. In the past terms, information security has fortunately become a top management topic due to the recognition of the continuously increasing dependencies of the overall business success on secure information and information processing technologies and means. While the focus of information security management primarily lay on the implementation of solutions to assure the achievement of the enterprises’ security objectives and their management, the business oriented management objectives were typically not regarded as major concern. Today, information security management executives are severely confronted with a different situation. An increasing pressure forces them to manage the security measures not only using their security, but also business glasses. To handle this challenge, a framework is presented in this chapter. It supports any information security functions with a strong economic focus, whereby it specifically links business and information security objectives. The core of the presented methodology has proven to be reliable, user friendly, consistent and precise under real conditions over several years.

This paper identifies and analyzes governance roles and tasks in SOA security governance at macro level. Drawing from Information Security Management standards and frameworks on one hand and SOA considerations on the other hand, the identified governance elements are mapped to a governance structure that specifies planning and execution aspects at four organizational decision-making levels, resulting in a prescriptive model with practical relevance.
