TL;DR: To mark the occasion of Nature Chemistry turning 10 years old, scientists working in different areas of chemistry were asked what they thought the most exciting, interesting or challenging aspects related to the development of their main field of research will be.
Chromatic acclimation and population dynamics of green sulfur bacteria grown with spectrally tailored light
Semion K. Saikin,Yadana Khin,Joonsuk Huh,Moataz Hannout,Yaya Wang,Farrokh Zare,Alán Aspuru-Guzik,Joseph Kuo-Hsiang Tang +7 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that the bacteria can survive in near-infrared lights capturing low-frequency photons by the intermediate units of the light-harvesting complex, and may be used by the species recently found near hydrothermal vents in the Pacific Ocean.

Gryffin: An algorithm for Bayesian optimization for categorical variables informed by physical intuition with applications to chemistry
Florian Häse,Loïc M. Roch,Alán Aspuru-Guzik +2 more
- 26 Mar 2020
TL;DR: Gryffin is introduced, as a general purpose optimization framework for the autonomous selection of categorical variables driven by expert knowledge and augments Bayesian optimization with kernel density estimation using smooth approximations to categorical distributions.

Quinone and hydroquinone based flow battery
Alán Aspuru-Guzik,Michael P. Marshak,Brian Huskinson,Suleyman Er,Michael J. Aziz,Changwon Suh,Roy G. Gordon,Liuchuan Tong,Kaixiang Lin +8 more
- 26 Sep 2014
TL;DR: In this article, an electrochemical cell based on a new chemistry for a flow battery for large scale, e.g., gridscale, electrical energy storage is presented, where electrical energy is stored chemically in quinone molecules having multiple oxidation states.

Generative Adversarial Networks for Crystal Structure Prediction.
TL;DR: These findings suggest that the generative model can be an effective way to explore hidden portions of the chemical space, an area that is usually unreachable when conventional substitution-based discovery is employed.
