Hydrogels in drug delivery: progress and challenges

Molecular self-assembly is the spontaneous association of molecules under equilibrium conditions into stable, structurally well-defined aggregates joined by noncovalent bonds. Molecular self-assembly is ubiquitous in biological systems and underlies the formation of a wide variety of complex biological structures. Understanding self-assembly and the associated noncovalent interactions that connect complementary interacting molecular surfaces in biological aggregates is a central concern in structural biochemistry. Self-assembly is also emerging as a new strategy in chemical synthesis, with the potential of generating nonbiological structures with dimensions of 1 to 10(2) nanometers (with molecular weights of 10(4) to 10(10) daltons). Structures in the upper part of this range of sizes are presently inaccessible through chemical synthesis, and the ability to prepare them would open a route to structures comparable in size (and perhaps complementary in function) to those that can be prepared by microlithography and other techniques of microfabrication.

Molecular self-assembly and nanochemistry: A chemical strategy for the synthesis of nanostructures

The superconducting characteristics on the itinerant ferromagnetic superconductor UGe2 have been investigated via the 73Ge-NQR measurements under pressure (P) near the critical pressure P x where the first-order transition takes place from the low-temperature (T) and low-P ferromagnetic phase (FM2) to high-T and high-P one (FM1). The measurements of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1 / T 1 have revealed a power-law like behavior as T n without the coherence peak, whereas at low temperatures, it deviates from the T n dependence to a T-linear like behavior. These results that depend on the pressure are well understood in terms of non-unitary spin-triplet pairing state where the ferromagnetic up-spin band is gapped, but the down-spin band remains gapless at the Fermi level. We will argue an intimate relationship of the onset of SC with FM1 and FM2.

The physical properties of cyclic polymers differ from those of linear polymers. To prepare cyclic polymers, the ends of a linear polymer must intramolecularly react. Cyclic polymers are typically synthesized at low concentration because intermolecular linkage is preferential to intramolecular linkage at high concentrations. Therefore, preparation of cyclic polymers at high concentrations is difficult. This study demonstrates a new approach to obtain cyclic polymers from highly concentrated polymer solutions using pseudo-polyrotaxanes (pPRxs). Cyclic polymers are prepared by penetrating a linear polymer into the cavity of a cyclic host to form pPRx and then the ends of the linear polymer are subsequently connected. Our approach allows the synthesis of cyclic polymers at concentration that do not allow conventional cyclic polymer synthesis. Specifically, although without pPRx, almost no cyclic polymers were obtained (<1%), with pPRx, the cyclic polymer was obtained as the main product (proportion of cyclic PEG 14%). This study demonstrates a new approach to obtain cyclic polymers from highly concentrated polymer solutions using pseudo-polyrotaxanes (pPRxs). Although without pPRx, no cyclic polymer were obtained (<1%), with pPRx, cyclic polymer was obtained as the main product (proportion of cyclic PEG 14%).
