An assessment of side-stream generation from Finnish forest industry
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined side-stream generation from Finnish forest industry comprising data from 19 sawmills, 1 plywood mill, 1 particleboard mill, 10 paper and board mills, 1 semi-mechanical mill, and 15 chemical pulp mills.

Biomass growth variation and phytoextraction potential of four Salix varieties grown in contaminated soil amended with lime and wood ash
Mir Md Abdus Salam,Muhammad Mohsin,Erik Kaipiainen,Aki Villa,Suvi Kuittinen,Pertti Pulkkinen,Paavo Pelkonen,Ari Pappinen +7 more
TL;DR: Cultivar Klara was found to be the most effective cultivar for phytoextraction since it displayed greater dry biomass production, Fv/Fm, TF, BCF values and uptake percentage rates of Cu and Zn compared to the other three cultivars.

Chemical and physical properties of short rotation tree species
Janne Pesonen,Toivo Kuokkanen,Erik Kaipiainen,Juha Koskela,Iina Jerkku,Ari Pappinen,Aki Villa +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, seven tree species were studied: three willows (Salix myrsinifolia, Salix schwerinii and Klara), one aspen (Populus tremula), one alder (Alnus glutinosa) and two birches (Betula pendula and Betula pubescens).

Fuel switching, energy saving and carbon trading – three ways to control carbon dioxide emissions in the Finnish forest industry
TL;DR: When the production costs of residues were compared with the costs of energy saving at different mills, the economic possibilities of integrated harvesting were more promising, however, both two elements are required to mitigate global CO2 emissions.
Bioethanol production from short rotation S. schwerinii E. Wolf is carbon neutral with utilization of waste-based organic fertilizer and process carbon dioxide capture
Suvi Kuittinen,Jenna Hietaharju,Laura Kupiainen,Md. Kamrul Hassan,Ming Yang,Erik Kaipiainen,Aki Villa,Jani Kangas,Markku Keinänen,Jouko Vepsäläinen,Ari Pappinen +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the sustainability of bioethanol production from short rotation coppice Salix schwerinii was considered from cultivation and harvesting to biofuel production and distribution, and the full value chain was evaluated according to the European Union Renewable Energy Directive.
