Ethanol extracts from the different parts of B. orellana showed differential antimicrobial activity. It was found that the extracts of in vitro leaves showed maximum activity against Bacillus pumilus followed by the extracts from the roots and hypocotyls. The callus derived from different explants too showed antimicrobial activity. The leaf callus showed maximum activity. The zone of inhibition for the diluted extracts of in vitro hypocotyls and roots and their corresponding calli showed minimum zone of inhibition at concentration 24 mg/ml, whereas the diluted extract of in vitro leaves and leaf derived callus showed minimum zone of inhibition at 16 mg/ml.

Brine, the historically known food additive salt solution, has been widely used as a pickling media to preserve flavor or enhance food aroma, appearance, or other qualities. The influence of pickling, using brine, on the aroma compounds and the primary and secondary metabolite profile in onion bulb Allium cepa red cv. and lemon fruit Citrus limon was evaluated using multiplex metabolomics technologies. In lemon, pickling negatively affected its key odor compound “citral”, whereas monoterpene hydrocarbons limonene and γ-terpinene increased in the pickled product. Meanwhile, in onion sulphur rearrangement products appeared upon storage, i.e., 3,5-diethyl-1,2,4-trithiolane. Profiling of the polar secondary metabolites in lemon fruit via ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to MS annotated 37 metabolites including 18 flavonoids, nine coumarins, five limonoids, and two organic acids. With regard to pickling impact, notable and clear separation among specimens was observed with an orthogonal projections to least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) score plot for the lemon fruit model showing an enrichment of limonoids and organic acids and that for fresh onion bulb showing an abundance of flavonols and saponins. In general, the pickling process appeared to negatively impact the abundance of secondary metabolites in both onion and lemon, suggesting a decrease in their food health benefits.

Influence of Pickling Process on Allium cepa and Citrus limon Metabolome as Determined via Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolomics.

Species of Terminalia L. genus (Combretaceae) were worldwide used in traditional medicine to treat different kind of diseases. In Africa, 30 Terminalia species were described and the traditional uses of most of it as antimicrobial agents were reported by different authors. In the present work a summary of the principal studies and results concerning the evaluation of the potential of 11 Terminalia species from Africa, America, Asia and Oceania as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antiprotozoal agents or source of these will be presented. In detail, results obtained by our team concerning the antimicrobial activity of Terminalia macroptera Guill & Perr., a tree widely distributed in the savannahs and woodlands of Tropical Africa and used in Guinea-Bissau to treat infectious diarrhoeal diseases and venereal diseases, will be presented and discussed. Extracts of T. macroptera leaf and/or root have been found to be slight active against Candida albicans, and showing an interesting profile of activity against Campylobacter sp., Shigella dysenteriae, Vibrio cholerae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Helicobacter pylori and HIV-1. Obtained results corroborate total or partially with the traditional usages of T. macroptera. Also referred are species like Terminalia arjuna, Terminalia bellerica and Terminalia chebula.
