Language and the Internet

The aim of this article is to review research in media innovation through a holistic, analytical, and concise approach. Although research in journalism innovation has experienced considerable growth in recent years, theoretical, methodological, and systematic contributions have received little and fragmented attention. Three hundred and two peer-reviewed publications, in both English and Spanish, were included in the sample. The most researched areas included diffusion theory, management, organizational culture, professional profiles, business models, genres and content, tools and technology, media labs and start-ups. Other less developed areas, such as policy, methodology, ethics, or journalism education, are also discussed. Finally, a number of proposals regarding further research on journalism innovation, considering the effect of Covid-19 on the media, are discussed.

Mass Media and the Shaping of American Feminism, 1963–1975

The aim of this paper is to offer a global view of Basque Journalism throughout its history, spanning more than three centuries, and hence, to fill the gap that existed in our historiography compared to that of the surrounding areas. From the production of news lists and the reception and reproduction of foreign gazettes by the first Basque printers in the 17th century, to the constitution of Company Journalism, moving on to Party Journalism during the 19th and 20th centuries (without forgetting the attempts of the erudite Basques to create newspaper titles in the country), and the revolution that the creation of the Internet has represented for the media, this paper takes a look at the main titles, companies, journalists and informative initiatives of the Basques.

espanolEl presente trabajo pretende abordar aspectos metodologicos y variables tematicas de un estudio de caso de analisis de proceso de convergencia mediatica. Se trata del Grupo de Comunicacion publico EITB, grupo de comunicacion de la Comunidad Autonoma del Pais Vasco, creado hace en 1982 por el Parlamento de dicha Comunidad. Tanto en el aspecto de la gestion (premio europeo EFQM, Q de Plata, 2008) como en el de la financiacion (primer Contrato Programa EITB - Gobierno vasco, 2002) es un grupo pionero en el entorno de los grupos mediaticos publicos del Estado espanol. Sin embargo, no podemos llegar a conclusiones definitivas en lo que respecta al proceso iniciado por el Grupo hace diez anos tanto a nivel de renovacion tecnologica con el paso de la produccion y emision analogicas al digital, como en lo referente a la integracion y creacion de sinergias entre los medios que conforman el grupo (television, radio e internet) en orden a unificar diversos procesos de informacion que anteriormente se abordaba de forma aislada por cada medio. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es, por ello, realizar una fotografia del nivel de integracion y de convergencia logrado por los tres medios del Grupo Publico de Comunicacion Vasco EITB. Los autores se han basado en las he rramientas metodologicas de investigaciones realizadas anteriormente en medios privados espanoles y plantean vias especificas de analisis del Grupo Publico de Comunicacion. Se considera el ano 2007 clave para entender el proceso en su integridad. En otono de ese ano, EITB estreno nueva sede en Bilbao, a donde ETB (tv) RADIO EUSKADI (radio) y EITBNET (internet) se trasladaron y formaron un espacio compartido comun. Para el trabajo que presentamos, nos interesa sobremanera resenar la actual composicion fisica de los redactores de los tres medios en un unico ambito, una unica redaccion. Euskadi Irratia, la radio en euskara que tiene su sede en Donostia/San Sebastian, y Radio Vitoria quedan fuera de este espacio comun. La investigacion que el grupo de profesores de la UPV/EHU esta llevando a cabo (EHU08/57) tiene por objeto situar el nivel de convergencia alcanzado por el Grupo EITB y pretende responder a la pregunta de si la integracion de sedes y de las redacciones de los medios lleva consigo una integracion en la produccion y distribucion de contenidos y si el proceso de convergencia emprendido trae consigo la utilizacion, por parte de los redactores de los tres medios, de herramientas para crear y editar formatos de caracter multimedia. EnglishThis paper deals with methodological aspects and thematic variables of a case study analysing the process of media convergence. The case study concer ns the EITB Public Communications Group, the communications group of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country, created in 1982 by the Parliament of that Community. Both in the aspect of management (Silver Q prize of the European Foundation for Qualit y Management, 2008) and in that of funding (First EITB - Basque Government Contract Program, 2002), it is a pioneering group in the field of public media groups in Spain. However, we cannot yet reach any definitive conclusions with respect to the process begun by the Group ten years ago both at the level of technological renovation, with the move from analogue to digital production and broadcasting, and with respect to the integration and creation of synergies amongst the media that make up the group (television, radio and internet) in order to unify different information processes that had previously been dealt with by each medium in isolation. The principal aim of this text is therefore to produce a snapshot of the level of integration and convergence achieved by the three media of the EITB Public Communications Group. Taking the methodological tools of earlier research in Spanish private media as a basis, the authors propose specific paths of analysis for the EITB Public Communications Group. The year 2007 is considered to be key for an integral understanding of the process. In autumn that year, EITB inaugurated its new head office in Bilbao, to which ETB (TV), RADIO EUSKADI (radio) and EITBNET (internet) were all transferred, occupying a common shared space. With respect to the paper we are presenting, we are especially interested in describing the present physical location of the editors of the three media in a single space, a single newsroom. Euskadi Irratia, the Basque language radio station that has its head office in Donostia/San Sebastian, and Radio Vitoria remain outside this common space. The research that the group of lecturers from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) is carrying out (EHU08/57) aims to situate the level of convergence achieved by the EITB Group and to answer the question of whether the integration of the offices and newsrooms of the media entails integration in the production and distribution of content, and whether the convergence process undertaken entails the utilisation, by the editors of the three media, of tools for creating and publishing crossmedia content.

El articulo explica los avances experimentados en este contexto convergente por cinco empresas de medios impresos y dos audiovisuales con sede en la Comunidad Autonoma Vasca. Esta investigacion cualitativa considera indicadores clave como la vision estrategica empresarial, la estructura interna de las redacciones y las rutinas de produccion, entre otros. Segun se concluye, una actitud proactiva y una aplicacion flexible de las innovaciones son requerimientos decisivos para avanzar con exito en los procesos de convergencia de medios, mas si cabe en los ambitos comunicativos regionales o autonomicos. In this context, the article explains the advancements on the subject of convergence experienced in five print media and two broadcasting media edited in the Basque Country. This qualitative research considers main indicators such as the medium’s strategic outlook, the inner structure of the newsrooms, the daily work routines for news production, the type of synergies and collaboration between radio/TV, print and online journalists, and the level of multi-skilling. As conclusions highlight, having a proactive attitude and promoting a flexible application of innovations, seems to be nowadays the key to success. euskaraPlataforma anitzeko konbergentzia- eta ekoizpen-testuinguruek aldaketa konplexuak eragin dituzte (ziber)komunikabideetan. Horretarako, erabilitako metodologiak hainbat analisi-kategoria hartzen ditu kontuan, hala nola kazetaritza-konbergentziaren ikuspegi estrategikoak, erredakzioaren egitura-mota, offline eta online hedabideak koordinatzeko erritmoak, informazioa ekoizteko errutinak, kazetarien arteko lankidetza-sinergiak eta erredaktoreen balio-aniztasuna. The agenda-setting paradigm has demonstrated itself helpful for explaining why the audience pays more attention to concrete events, by means of receiving more information about them. The new digital media environment seems to be introducing some disruptions in this scenario, owing to a new relationship between the media and the audiences. The Web opens the door to the participation of the public in the selection of media contents, even in the publication of news stories and comments, or in the social interaction. According to this scenario, this paper explores how the publics' agenda gains visibility in the online media, through their interactive mechanisms. Specifically, the study aims to determine if the publics' agenda is coherent with the online media agenda, under the hypothesis that online public opinion has become a competing agenda-setting force. Taking into consideration two European quality online media, and using a qualitative and quantitative methodology, the study focuses on the coverage of the main news items of the homepage with the aim of examining if the media main topics coincide with the contents preferred by the audiences. The conclusions discuss if the traditional agenda setting is still influencing what the public reads and comments on the web.
