Taxonomy of information security risk assessment (ISRA)

A novel framework for fully scalable video coding that performs open-loop motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) in the wavelet domain (in-band) is presented in this paper. Unlike the conventional spatial-domain MCTF (SDMCTF) schemes, which apply MCTF on the original image data and then encode the residuals using the critically sampled discrete wavelet transform (DWT), the proposed framework applies the in-band MCTF (IBMCTF) after the DWT is performed in the spatial dimensions. To overcome the inefficiency of MCTF in the critically-sampled DWT, a complete-to-overcomplete DWT (CODWT) is performed. Recent theoretical findings on the CODWT are reviewed from the application perspective of fully-scalable IBMCTF, and constraints on the transform calculation that allow for fast and seamless resolution-scalable coding are established. Furthermore, inspired by recent work on advanced prediction techniques, an algorithm for optimized multihypothesis temporal filtering is proposed in this paper. The application of the proposed algorithm in MCTF-based video coding is demonstrated, and similar improvements as for the multihypothesis prediction algorithms employed in closed-loop video coding are experimentally observed. Experimental instantiations of the proposed IBMCTF and SDMCTF coders with multihypothesis prediction produce single embedded bitstreams, from which subsets are extracted to be compared against the current state-of-the-art in video coding.

Wavelet-based resolution enhancement methods improve the image resolution by estimating the high-frequency band information. In this paper, we propose a new resolution enhancement method using inter-subband correlation in which the sampling phase in DWT is considered. Interpolation filters are designed by analyzing correlations between subbands having different sampling phases in the lower level, and applied to the correlated subbands in the higher level. The filters are estimated under the assumption that correlations between two subbands in the higher level are similar to that in the lower level in DWT. The experimental results show that our proposed method outperforms the conventional interpolation methods including the other wavelet-based methods with respect to peak signal-to-noise-ratio (PSNR) as well as the subjective quality.

In this paper, we present a fully scalable 3-D overcomplete wavelet video coder that employs a new and highly efficient 3-D lifting structure for adaptive motion compensated temporal filtering (MCTF). Unlike the conventional interframe wavelet video techniques that apply MCTF on the spatial domain video data and then encode the resulting temporally filtered frames using critical sampled wavelet transforms, the scheme proposed in this paper performs first the spatial domain wavelet transform and subsequently applies MCTF for each wavelet band. To overcome the inefficiency of motion estimation in the wavelet domain, the low band shifting method (LBS) is used at both the encoder and decoder to generate an overcomplete representation of the temporal reference frames. A novel interleaving algorithm for the overcomplete wavelet coefficient is proposed that enables optimal sub-pixel accuracy motion estimation implementations. Furthermore, to achieve arbitrary accuracy motion estimation and compensation in the overcomplete wavelet domain with perfect reconstruction, a novel 3-D lifting structure is also introduced. Simulation results shows that the proposed fully scalable 3-D overcomplete wavelet video coder has comparable or better performance (up to 0.5dB) than the previously proposed interframe wavelet coders under the same coding conditions. Several techniques that can further improve the performance of the proposed overcomplete wavelet coding scheme are also discussed.

This paper presents main security risk assessment methodologies used in information technology. The author starts from [Sherer and Alter, 2004] and [Ma and Pearson, 2005] research, bringing realworld examples as to underline limitations of the two risk assessment models. After a critical review of standards that reveal lack of rigour, a practical comparison of the quantitative information security risk assessment models with the qualitative models shows that we can introduce two new factors which have an impact on risk assessment: time constraint and moral hazard of the analyst. Information technology managers know that in information systems long-term security is an ideal situation and that financial impact of poor information security policies, procedures and standards are in most cases very difficult to be calculated. These calculations rarely will be accurate and universal and ready for use by any security analyst.

Information Security Risk Assessment: The Qualitative Versus Quantitative Dilemma

It has been demonstrated recently that 3-D wavelet coding with motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) provides a wide range of spatio-temporal-SNR scalability with state-of-the-art coding performance. However, the coding system is very different from the already standardized motion-compensated DCT (MC-DCT) video coders such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4, or H.26L. Nonetheless, the market acceptance of the new scalable technology will come much easier if backward compatibility to such previous standards would exist. In this paper, we present a new coder architecture where the base layer can be a standard MC-DCT coder, while the enhancement layer is an in-band MCTF codec operating in the overcomplete wavelet domain. First, we propose a simple extension of the scalable 3-D wavelet codec with a standard MC-DCT base layer. As a second step, to improve the performance of the proposed scalable coder over a wide range of bit-rates, we describe several small extensions to the standardized MC-DCT codec structure that can be applied for the base layer coding.
