The ever more extensive data collection from Internet of Thing (IoT) devices stresses the need for efficient application development tools. State-of-the-art IoT cloud services are powerful, but the best solutions are proprietary, and there is a growing demand for interoperability and standardization. We have investigated how to develop a nonvendor-locked framework, which exploits state of the art data management technologies, and targets effective and efficient development in this article. Focusing on the concept of measurement, we abstracted an architecture that could be applied in a variety of domains and contexts. We tested the framework and its workflow in four use cases analyzing data and enabling new services in health, automotive, and instruction. Our experience showed the benefits of the development tool, which is not tied to a commercial platform, nor requires the huge set-up times needed to start a project from scratch. The tool is released open-source, particularly supporting collaborative research.

Atmosphere, an Open Source Measurement-Oriented Data Framework for IoT

Social media platforms have become a common venue for sharing experiences and knowledge about health-related topics. This research focuses on examining social media-based communication patterns related to diabetes on the Twitter platform. Specifically, we apply an updated methodology to examine changes in the current use of hash-tags, trending hash-tags, and the frequency of diabetes-related tweets using a previous study as a baseline. Our results show significant growth in the diabetes community on Twitter over time and also evidence that this community is increasing in its capacity to spread awareness regarding diabetes- related health topics. Our methodological contributions include an improved framework for collecting, cleaning and analyzing Twitter data related to diabetes as well as the application of regular expressions to categorize subsets of tweets. We have also developed a model based on word-embedding and long short term memory to identify tweets of diabetic patients.

Using Twitter for diabetes community analysis

Source code comprehension (SCC) continues to be a challenge to undergraduate CS students. Understanding the mental processes that students follow while comprehending source code can be crucial in helping students to overcome related challenges. The ‘Decoding the Disciplines’ (DtDs) paradigm that is gaining popularity world-wide provides a process to help students to master the mental actions they need to be successful in a specific discipline. In focusing on the first DtDs step of identifying mental obstacles (“bottlenecks”), this paper describes a study aimed at uncovering the major SCC bottlenecks that senior CS students experienced. We followed an integrated methodological approach where data were collected by asking questions, observations, and artefact analysis. Thematic analysis of the collected data revealed a series of SCC difficulties specifically related to arrays, programming logic, and control structures. The identified difficulties, including findings from the literature as well as our own teaching experiences, were used to compile a usable list of SCC bottlenecks. By focusing on senior students (instead of first-year students), the identified SCC bottlenecks point to learning difficulties that need to be addressed in introductory CS courses.

Decoding Source Code Comprehension: Bottlenecks Experienced by Senior Computer Science Students

Web applications are an important platform in today's society, which humans rely on to complete daily tasks. Most of the web applications were developed with sophisticated, well-known, and powerful web development frameworks. While these frameworks evolve and grow at exponential rate, it become very complex, challenging to learn and no longer intuitive for web application developers, especially those who are inexperience and amateur. There is a need for a simpler web development framework which is sufficient for contemporary web application development. Pigeon-table is a simple module developed under ngPigeon project with the aim to generate web content, i.e. table using data from MySQL database with a single html tag. Pigeon-table is intuitive and easy to learn as it was developed with the principle “web developer-centred design” in mind. A pilot test was conducted in this study to evaluate the satisfactory level among amateur web application developers towards pigeon-table as nano-framework.

Data-driven web applications are now taking over the role of traditional desktop applications as it is more convenient to the end user. However, developing a web application is considered challenging especially for junior web developers due to development processes, e.g. selection of development frameworks, learning the framework with lengthy documentations as well as experiment, or integrating the framework during the development. In this paper we proposed and developed a quick prototyping tool, “pigeon-table”, for data-driven web application development specifically focusing on data retrieval from MySQL database and render the data into an interactive table in a web application. The aims of this project are, 1) to optimize web developers' productivity in web application development as the tool is straightforward and simple, and 2) to enhance end user browsing experience with an interactive table in the data-driven web application.

Pigeon-table: A quick prototyping tool using twitter bootstraps and AngularJS for data-driven web application development

Netscape first provided a grand unification of sorts by offering a single, uniform interface to resources spread across the globe. Simple HTML interfaces to CGI (and later PHP) scripts provided the second grand unification-as suddenly software developers did not need to worry about client software distribution any more. Both Java and Javascript attempted (in their own ways) to enhance the degree of sophistication of the end-user experience. Protocols and technologies came and went (xml-rpc, SOAP, Java RMI, OpenLaszlo, etc.) while the typical web development solution slowly converged towards a (now traditional) LAMP stack architecture. As web development projects became more demanding, frameworks like Spring and Rails (for Ruby) demonstrated the viability of the MVC pattern and helped spawn replicas (CakePHP, Django, Grails, etc.) into other communities. Today it's fair to say that the move towards the MVC architectures was just another (spontaneous, unplanned) attempt to unify development over the web. Simplicity often tends to be a great focal point of evolution. In the last 5-6 years another type of unification became possible due to the surprising resurgence of a most unlikely candidate: Javascript. First Javascript was the glue that made possible the ideas behind HTML5 (as an entirely new set of APIs, and not just a new set of tags). Then in 2009 with the first release of Node.js (relying on Google's Javascript V8 engine) the creation of web servers and networking tools using JavaScript became not just possible, but also extremely efficient. These days, using MongoDB as the document database, Node.js as the server platform (with Express as a flexible and robust server-side web application framework) along with AngularJS (by Google) for the GUIs on the client side, developers are finally capable of creating more agile software by using a single language across all layers of application development. This has the potential to drastically change how we teach web programming. MEAN Web Development: A Tutorial for Educators

Sixteen years ago, Scott Aaronson remarked (in the presence of Ray Laflamme) that quantum mechanics (QM) resembles an operating system on which the rest of Physics is running its application software (except for general relativity "which has not yet been successfully ported to this particular OS''). Prior to that, it took the insight of an educator and eminent computer scientist (Umesh Vazirani) to realize that a complete and consistent introduction to QM can be given via the language of qubits and quantum gates. Closer to the present, it took the profound intuition of another polymath (Terry Rudolph) to realize that the linear algebra normally at the foundation of such an approach can be replaced with a simple rewriting system accessible to middle school students. Rewriting systems are at the foundation of Computer Science, they are, in fact, the very fabric of it (e.g., Turing machines and lambda calculus), so these are very fortunate developments. Furthermore, a linear algebra prerequisite is now shared firmly in the CS undergraduate curriculum with Machine Learning, a topic that has known a very deep and sudden revival. Quantum Information Science and Technology (QIST) is inherently interdisciplinary and spans physics, computer science, mathematics, engineering, chemistry and materials science. We present three curricular plans for incorporating QIST topics (via Quantum Computing) into the CS undergraduate curriculum. Such plans have been constructed with a preliminary consultation with QED-C members (industry, academia, national labs, and government agencies) asking for comments, suggestions and general input on these three curricular plans.

On the Design and Implementation of a Quantum Architectures Knowledge Unit for a CS Curriculum

After thirty years or more of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) many students still struggle to learn at the university level, while ever more techniques are being developed to help students learn and measure their success. In practice, however, efforts to reshape classes begin with questions such as: "How can I make use of this new technique?" Or, "How can I increase my students' critical thinking?" Such questions are often too broad to provide a clear focal point for designing efficient strategies. They sometimes draw attention to parts of the course not in great need of reform, and generally focus the process on the means (teaching) rather than the end (student learning). A shift is taking place in higher education so that teaching is approached not from content or from the teaching methods, but from the mental processes that are crucial to functioning in a discipline. Decoding the Disciplines (Middendorf & Pace, 2004) is an evidence-based, learner-centered methodology that can conclusively improve teaching by prioritizing what really matters in making meaning in a discipline and boosting learning outcomes in the classroom. It offers a meta-strategy, providing both a framework to define the task at hand and a means to determine which tools would be most useful in accomplishing it. Starting from the bottlenecks, the places where students get stuck, and connecting them with what experts do so they won't get stuck, the crucial mental processes drive the teaching and learning so students can be successful.
