Comparison of 30-day mortality models for profiling hospital performance in acute ischemic stroke with vs without adjustment for stroke severity.
Gregg C. Fonarow,Wenqin Pan,Jeffrey L. Saver,Eric E. Smith,Mathew J. Reeves,Joseph P. Broderick,Dawn Kleindorfer,Ralph L. Sacco,DaiWai M. Olson,Adrian F. Hernandez,Eric D. Peterson,Lee H. Schwamm +11 more
TL;DR: Adding stroke severity as measured by the NIHSS to a hospital 30-day risk model based on claims data for Medicare beneficiaries with acute ischemic stroke was associated with considerably improved model discrimination and change in mortality performance rankings for a substantial portion of hospitals.
Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump Use Before Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation: Insights From the INTERMACS Registry.
Adam D. DeVore,Bradley G. Hammill,Chetan B. Patel,Manesh R. Patel,Joseph G. Rogers,Carmelo A. Milano,Adrian F. Hernandez +6 more
TL;DR: Current use of intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABPs) before LVAD implantation is examined and results suggest that IABP use may mitigate risk of early postoperative adverse outcomes in select patients.
Early Ambulation Among Hospitalized Heart Failure Patients Is Associated With Reduced Length of Stay and 30-Day Readmissions
Lisa M. Fleming,Xin Zhao,Adam D. DeVore,Paul A. Heidenreich,Clyde W. Yancy,Gregg Fonarow,Adrian F. Hernandez,Robb D. Kociol +7 more
TL;DR: Multivariable-adjusted hospital-level analysis suggests an association between EA among patients hospitalized with heart failure and both shorter length of stay and lower 30-day readmissions.
Use of Intravenous Recombinant Tissue Plasminogen Activator in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke Who Take Non–Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants Before Stroke
Ying Xian,Jerome J. Federspiel,Adrian F. Hernandez,Daniel T. Laskowitz,Lee H. Schwamm,Deepak L. Bhatt,Eric E. Smith,Gregg C. Fonarow,Eric D. Peterson +8 more
TL;DR: Preliminary observations suggest that rt-PA appears to be reasonably well tolerated without prohibitive risks for adverse events among selected NOAC-treated patients.
Long-term outcomes and costs of ventricular assist devices among Medicare beneficiaries.
Adrian F. Hernandez,Alisa M. Shea,Carmelo A. Milano,Joseph G. Rogers,Bradley G. Hammill,Christopher M. O'Connor,Kevin A. Schulman,Eric D. Peterson,Lesley H. Curtis +8 more
TL;DR: Among Medicare beneficiaries receiving a ventricular assist device, early mortality, morbidity, and costs remain high and improving patient selection and reducing perioperative mortality are critical for improving overall outcomes.
