Environmental phenomena have a major impact on our daily lives. These include changes affecting the sources of life such as in the waters and air of our world, which have been degraded in purity. The term ‘smart environment’ is defined as a technology that provides many facilities and solutions for many environmental application issues related to water quality and health, air pollution, weather, radiation monitoring, waste management, natural disaster, and many other environment indicators. Smart environment sensors integrated with ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) technology can provide a new concept in tracking, sensing and monitoring objects of environment. This can provide potential benefits leading up to the possibility of achieving a green world and a sustainable lifestyle. IoT allows environmental sensors to connect with other systems such smart phones through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to send enormous amounts of data to the network and can allow us to have a better understanding of our surroundings and find suitable solutions for today environmental problems. In this review article, we will provide a brief conception of environment areas of study based on IoT technology and discuss the justification behind using IoT in the field of environmental studies. Moreover, we will investigate many proposed applications of environmental research based upon IoT.

Internet of things in Smart Environment: Concept, Applications, Challenges, and Future Directions

The new generation of wireless body area networks (WBAN) for the internet of things (IoT) is emerging in a fast-paced. Today patients can be tested using remote clinical nanosensors. WBAN involves small interconnected sensors for the collection of ongoing medical data and transmitted through the networks for further processing. However, the protection of healthcare data is very important and difficult because of the various active and passive numbers of attacks. Although there exist several literatures on data security techniques such as digital signatures, Elliptic curve cryptography, and Advanced Encryption Standards (AES) they contain stumbling blocks for the security methodologies. Thus, in this paper, a novel data protection genetic-based encryption scheme is proposed for higher performance.

A Lightweight Genetic Based Algorithm for Data Security in Wireless Body Area Networks

In recent years, technology use has assumed an important role in the support of human activities. Intellectual work has become the main preferred human activity, while structured activities are going to become ever more automatized for increasing their efficiency. For this reason, we assist to the diffusion of ever more innovative devices able to face new emergent problems. These devices can interact with the environment and each other autonomously, taking decisions even without human control. This is the Internet of Things (IoT) phenomenon, favored by low cost, high mobility, high interaction and low power devices. This spread of devices has become uncontrolled, but security in this context continues to increase slowly. The purpose of this work is to model and evaluate a new IoT security system. The context is based on a generic IoT system in the presence of lightweight actuator and sensor nodes exchanging messages through Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol. This work aims to increase the security of this protocol at application level, particularly mitigating Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. The system is based on the use of a host Intrusion Detection System (IDS) which applies a threshold based packet discarding policy to the different topics defined through MQTT.

Modeling and evaluation of a new IoT security system for mitigating DoS attacks to the MQTT broker

One of the main concerns with our environment has been solid waste management which in addition to disturbing the balance of the environment also has adverse effects on the health of the society. The detection, monitoring and management of wastes is one of the primary problems of the present era. The traditional way of manually monitoring the wastes in waste bins is a complex, cumbersome process and utilizes more human effort, time and cost which is not compatible with the present day technologies in any wa y. This paper proposes an advanced method in which waste management is automated. Radio frequency identification (RFID) is one of the most promising and anticipated technologies in recent years. The system makes use of radio frequency (RF) tags and web sup port. This work presented here certainly provides a novel approach in handling and disposing off the day to day solid wastes in an efficient and easy way. The system consists of four main subsystems namely Smart Trash System (STS), Local Base Station (LBS) , Smart Vehicle System (SVS) and Smart Monitoring and Controlling Hut (SMCH). The proposed system would be able to automate the solid waste monitoring process and management of the overall collection process. The technologies that would be used in the prop osed system are good enough to ensure the practical and perfect for solid waste collection process monitoring and management for green environment.

Concept, Design and Implementation of Automatic Waste Management System

This paper proposes a security algorithm for Internet of Things (IoT) using simple lightweight cryptographic operations. The main advantage of the proposed algorithm is the simplicity, energy efficiency and the speed of algorithm such that it can be computed quickly using a low-power microcontroller. The encryption of the sensed data is performed using simple operations so as to consume smaller amount of node energy. To test the effectiveness, of the proposed algorithm, an experimental rig is set up to implement the proposed algorithm. The analysis confirms that the proposed algorithm provides end-to-end encryption and imparts security against likely attacks such as brute force attack, spoofing attack, and has small code footprint. It is envisaged that the algorithm can be very useful in securing message transmissions in Internet of Things.

Securing Communication in MQTT enabled Internet of Things with Lightweight security protocol

Wireless sensor network is an emerging imperious leading technology of the current century that presents great promise for various pioneering applications. The use of sensor networks should keep developing, mainly in the fields of scientific, logistic, healthcare and military applications. Sensor networks interact and collect sensitive data and operate in unattended hostile environments, thus it is imperative to pay attention to the security of wireless sensor networks as they are highly prone to threats. For successful operation of the nodes, it is important to maintain the security and privacy of the transmitted data as well as the data stored at nodes. The different security protocols and models used in the wired and other wireless networks such as ad-hoc networks cannot be used in wireless sensor networks because the sensor size poses significant restrictions, mainly in terms of energy autonomy and node lifetime, as the batteries have to be too tiny. In this paper, a lightweight dynamic security algorithm for wireless sensor networks has been proposed and implemented and then its performance analysis is carried out.
