Disclosed herein are display and photonic devices utilizing metasurfaces. An optical device comprising an optical component and an optical transmission medium is disclosed. A waveguide couples the optical component and the optical transmission medium. A metasurface is disposed on an end of the waveguide and arranged to increase an optical coupling between the waveguide and the optical transmission medium. Additionally, a display comprising a number of light emitting elements and a metasurface for each of the light emitting elements. The metasurface arranged to eliminate screen door effect in virtual reality display systems.

An optical metasurface film includes a flexible polymeric film having a first major surface, a patterned polymer layer having a first surface proximate to the first major surface of the flexible polymeric film and having a second nanostructured surface opposite the first surface, and a refractive index contrast layer adjacent to the nanostructured surface of the patterned polymer layer forming a nanostructured bilayer with a nanostructured interface. The nanostructured bilayer acts locally on amplitude, phase, or polarization of light, or a combination thereof and imparts a light phase shift that varies as a function of position of the nanostructured bilayer on the flexible polymeric film. The light phase shift of the nanostructured bilayer defines a predetermined operative phase profile of the optical metasurface film.

Optical metasurface films

The present invention facilitates manufacturing of an imaging device having a function for correcting aberration in an imaging-lens optical system. A meta-lens and an imaging element which constitute an imaging device are formed by a semiconductor process. The meta-lens carries out aberration correction in the imaging-lens optical system. The imaging element images incident light which has passed through the imaging-lens optical system. The meta-lens may be formed inside the imaging element or on the surface thereof, or may be formed as a section of a wafer level chip size package.

Quantitative phase gradient microscopes (QPGM) using metasurface layers including birefringent lenses are disclosed. The birefringent lenses are manufactured by patterning nanoposts on two different transparent substrates or on opposite sides of the same transparent substrate. Methods to generate phase gradient images (PGI) of objects using the described devices are also disclosed.

Metasurface elements, integrated systems incorporating such metasurface elements with light sources and/or detectors, and methods of the manufacture and operation of such optical arrangements and integrated systems are provided. Systems and methods for integrating transmissive metasurfaces with other semiconductor devices or additional metasurface elements, and more particularly to the integration of such metasurfaces with substrates, illumination sources and sensors are also provided. The metasurface elements provided may be used to shape output light from an illumination source or collect light reflected from a scene to form two unique patterns using the polarization of light. In such embodiments, shaped-emission and collection may be combined into a single co-designed probing and sensing optical system.
