Bangladesh derives one-half of its agricultural GDP and one-sixth of its national income from paddy. It is crucial to the farmers’ ability to survive. This paper aims to investigate current paddy procurement system and farmer awareness in the Bangladeshi agricultural sector to ensure business sustainability. This paper utilised a quantitative approach to research. The research investigated farmers’ consciousness through perception and contentment. For the measurement, a survey of 210 farmers from three Upazilas was conducted using a closed-ended, pre-tested questionnaire. Version 20 of the SPSS programme was used for data analysis. Approximately 67.6% of respondents were unhappy with the current paddy procurement system, according to the study. Approximately 69.10% of respondents believe there is a middleman in the current paddy procurement system, approximately 94.30% of respondents believe the current system needs improvement, and 99.0% believe a new paddy procurement system could be beneficial. Furthermore, these findings led to the conclusion that there is room for improvement in the current paddy procurement system, which will increase the transparency and sustainability of paddy procurement activities for everyone, including farmers.

The Paddy Procurement System for Sustainability: Evidence from Bangladesh Agriculture Sector

Farmers’ understanding of yield gap is necessary to increase rice yield and meet the rising demand for rice in Bangladesh. An investigation was conducted to explore the farmers’ attitudes towards yield gap minimization of rice in Muktagachha sub-district, Mymensingh District, Bangladesh. From February to April 2019, data was collected utilizing a structured interview schedule from 100 randomly selected rice growers. Descriptive statistics, rank order, coefficient of correlation, and multiple linear regression were used to examine the data. The findings revealed that almost all of the rice farmers had moderately (62.22%) to highly (37.78%) favourable attitudes towards yield gap minimization of rice in the investigation region. Among twenty attitudinal statements, ‘measurement of yield gap of rice is very easy for the farmers’ was identified as the most important one. The least ranked statement was ‘political problems act as a barrier to minimize rice yield gap’. According to the results of the correlation analysis, participation in organization, extension media interaction, training received, knowledge of adoption of HYV, and innovativeness were positively and significantly related with farmers’ attitudes towards yield gap minimization of rice. Results of regression analysis showed that organizational participation, extension media interaction, training received, knowledge of adoption of HYV, and innovativeness made significant contributions to favourable attitudes of the farmers towards yield gap minimization of rice. Expanding research, monitoring transfer of technology, providing simple access to extension agents, and developing farmers’ knowledge and skills through effective training could all help to close the rice yield gap.

Exploring farmers’ attitudes towards yield gap minimization of rice: a case from mymensingh district, bangladesh

The demand for organic brown sugar has shown significant growth in recent years, presenting an opportunity to enhance production by strategically leveraging existing expertise among stakeholders. The objective of this study was to assess the viability of producing brown sugar, with a particular focus on the technical efficiency of marginal cane farmers. This study investigates the technical efficiency of sugarcane farmers who are concurrently engaged in the production of organic brown sugar within a specific region in Bangladesh. The data collection process involved the use of purposive sampling, which resulted in the collection of 163 farm data sets from September to December 2021. Subsequently, a stochastic frontier production function was carefully employed to estimate the technical efficiency of the selected brown sugar producers. The findings of the current study demonstrate that less than half of the respondents (47.24%) were involved in activities linked to maintain a high efficiency level that was greater than 91 percent. It was discovered that a range of technical efficiency scores, which varied from 49.94 to 98.38 percent, with a mean value of 84.5%. There exists a significant potential for enhancing crop productivity by up to 15.5% with the implementation of improved agricultural management techniques like substantial experience, education, and training which tends to exhibit enhanced the efficiency of the production.

Assimilating the Responsible Factors for the Technical Efficiency of Organic Brown Sugar Production: Stochastic Frontier Approach

Farmers of the coastal region in Bangladesh are vulnerable to various climatic hazards that affect agricultural productivity and livelihoods. This study investigated the yield gap, risk attitude, and poverty status of Aman rice farmers and also assessed the relationship among them in the climate-vulnerable southern coastal areas of Bangladesh. This study selected 125 Aman rice farmers using a simple random sampling technique to estimate three types of yield gaps. Risk attitude was calculated using the safety-first model, and the Foster–Greer–Thorbecke model was employed to estimate poverty status. Results revealed a significant amount of yield gaps in Aman rice production, while farmers had opportunities to increase their production through the optimal use and scientific management of inputs. The yield gaps are reflected in the farmers’ risk aversion attitude, with the majority of farmers being highly risk-averse. The study also revealed that half of the sampled farmers were poor, with a poverty gap of 15%. However, an increased number of non-poor was revealed due to a reduction both in yield gaps and farmers’ riskaversion attitudes. Therefore, the study suggests limiting the yield gap to manage farmers’ risk-aversion attitudes, which would also facilitate improving their poverty

Yield Gap, Risk Attitude, and Poverty Status of Aman Rice Producers in Climate-Vulnerable Coastal Areas of Bangladesh

The research aimed to assess the profitability of Transplanted Aman (T. Aman) rice cultivation in the southern region of Bangladesh. Specifically, it sought to identify the most successful service providers and evaluate the financial viability of T. Aman rice cultivation in the study area. Data collection involved 118 randomly selected respondents, including farmers, dealers, and marketers. The overall cost of production per hectare, as determined by primary data analysis, came to Tk. 34,869.76. Furthermore, 2,149.00 kg of T. Aman rice were produced on average per acre. The resultant Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) of 1.26 means that for every taka invested in T. Aman production yielded Tk. 1.26 in return. Gross returns were determined to be Tk. 43,882.58, resulting in net returns of Tk. 9,013.58. The findings underscored the profitability of T. Aman rice cultivation in the southern region of Bangladesh, as evidenced by the favorable results of the cost-benefit analysis. It is recommended to utilize contemporary inputs such as high-quality seeds, fertilizers, efficient labor, power tillers, pesticides, and timely irrigation to enhance output and profitability. Timely and effective utilization of these inputs is crucial for maximizing output and profitability in T. Aman rice cultivation.

Profitability of Transplanted Aman rice cultivation in some selected areas of the southern part of Bangladesh

Agriculture is the most important sector of the economy of Bangladesh due to its role in food security, employment and livelihoods (Habiba, 2015). It accounts for 14.74% of the sectoral share of GDP and about 41% of the total labor force (BBS, 2016). As Bangladesh is the 8 populous country in the world, provides for 2.11% of global population with very limited land resource of 130,170 sq. km and agriculture in Bangladesh is already under pressure (worldometers, 2020). The country’s agriculture suffers from huge and increasing demands for food and from problems of land and water resource depletion (Ahmed et al., 2000). To cope with the population growth, the total production must be increased every year to a certain level; estimated to be to an additional amount of 2.6 million tons of husked rice every year compared to that of the previous year to feed the extra millions (Sultana, 2017).
