Development of furnished cages for laying hens
Michael C. Appleby,AW Walker,Christine J Nicol,AC Lindberg,Rafael Freire,Barry O. Hughes,HA Elson +6 more
TL;DR: The results were still very good even with 8 birds per cage, and support the principle that furnished cages provide an acceptable way of protecting the welfare of laying hens, as well as lowering food consumption and mortality in one trial out of three.

Influence of prior exposure to wood shavings on feather pecking, dustbathing and foraging in adult laying hens.
TL;DR: A secondary 'sensitive period' for the formation of adult dustbathing substrate preference may have superseded the early 'imprinting' process, and adult behaviour was generally flexible and strongly influenced by current substrate.

Dustbathing in modified battery cages: Is sham dustbathing an adequate substitute?
AC Lindberg,Christine J Nicol +1 more
TL;DR: There was little difference between treatments in the behavioural components included in dustbathing bouts, although for example, rubbing and pecking were more common on the dusty substrate than on the wire floor.

An evaluation of the effect of operant feeders on welfare of hens maintained on litter
AC Lindberg,Christine J Nicol +1 more
TL;DR: The use of operant feeders was associated with an increased risk of feather pecking when compared with groups exposed only to conventional ad libitum feeders.

Effects of observational learning on acquisition of an operant response in horses
TL;DR: The effect of observational learning on the acquisition of an operant response was examined in eighteen riding horses and ponies as mentioned in this paper, where the observer horses watched either the demonstrator performing the bin-opening response or standing passively (Group D), or the operant bin in the absence of a demonstrator (Group B).
