Zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and selenium (Se) are well-known as essential trace elements. These elements attract a great interest, not only in the scientific world, but also in the public option. The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum Zn, Cu, and Se levels in healthy volunteers (60 females and 55 males) living in Tehran. The age (6–62 years) and sex of the subjects, as well as drug and tobacco consumption, were registered. The concentrations of these elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. The serum levels of Zn, Cu, and Se in the normal population of Tehran was 0.89 ± 0.16 mg/L, 0.95 ± 0.20 mg/L, and 99.10 ± 21.78 μg/L, respectively. There was no significant gender-related difference in serum Zn concentration (p < 0.15). However, a significant difference (p < 0.05) in both Cu and Se levels was observed between males and females.

Serum Levels of Antioxidants (Zn, Cu, Se) in Healthy Volunteers Living in Tehran

The purpose of the study was to determine the serum concentration of trace elements of panic disorder patients and to find out the relationship between trace element levels and nutritional status or socio-economic factors. The study was conducted among 54 panic disorder patients and 52 healthy volunteers. Patients were recruited from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by random sampling. Serum trace element concentrations were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (for Mg, Zn, Ca, and Cu) as well as graphite furnace (for Mn). Data were analyzed by independent t test, Pearson's correlation analysis, regression analysis, and ANOVA. The serum concentration of Mn, Zn, Ca, Cu, and Mg in panic disorder patients were 0.37 +/- 0.30, 0.67 +/- 0.20, 99.91 +/- 15.15, 0.83 +/- 0.23, and 21.14 +/- 3.72 mg/L, while those were 0.4163 +/- 0.2527, 0.86 +/- 0.3, 106.6073 +/- 18.6531, 0.8514 +/- 0.3646, and 21.37 +/- 2.03 mg/L in control subjects, respectively. The serum concentration of Zn decreased significantly (p = 0.001) in patient group. But the differences of the concentration of Mn, Ca, Cu, and Mg between patient and control group were not significant (p = 0.522, p = 0.065, p = 0.800, and p = 0.712, respectively). Socio-economic data reveal that most of the patients were very poor and middle aged. Mean BMIs of the control group (23.74 +/- 2.71 kg/m(2)) and the patient group (22.62 +/- 3.74 kg/m(2)) were within the normal range (18.5-25.0 kg/m(2)). There was no significant relationship between serum zinc level and BMI of patients (r = 0.038; p = 0.809). So the decreased level of serum zinc in panic disorder patients was not because of other reasons, but rather it may provide a prognostic tool for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

Comparative Analysis of Serum Manganese, Zinc, Calcium, Copper and Magnesium Level in Panic Disorder Patients

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate serum trace elements level, selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) at the diagnosis of acute leukemia, and also if there is any difference in their serum levels among various subtypes of disease Subjects: Fifty newly-diagnosed acute leukemia patients before starting therapy and fifty healthy subjects were entered into the study Methods: Serum trace elements level was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry technique Results: Serum selenium and zinc levels were significantly lower in patients than in healthy subjects The comparison of trace element levels in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) subtypes showed significant difference in Se levels between AML-M3 and AML-M5 There were no significant difference between Cu levels of patients and healthy subjects Conclusions: Low serum levels of Zn and Se in leukemia patients in this study can express the need for assessing the effect of improving trace elements status on patient`s overall survival A difference in Se levels between subgroups of AML patients warrants further investigation with larger sample size

Trace elements (Se, Zn, and Cu) levels in patients with newly diagnosed acute leukemia

The relationship between the elevated levels of serum malondialdehyde, depleted level of antioxidants (vitamin A, E and C) and altered level of immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG and IgM) in several psychiatric disorders has been established by various experimental evidences over the past few years. But previously no study was carried out to determine these components in patients suffering from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in Bangladesh. This study was conducted to compare the serum concentration of these components in GAD patients and healthy volunteers; matched by socioeconomic and sociodemographic parameters. Serum level of malondialdehyde and vitamin C were determined by UV spectrophotometric method, vitamins A and E were detected by RP-HPLC method whereas immunoglobulin levels were determined by turbidimetric method. Data were analyzed by independent t-test, Pearson’s correlation and regression analysis. Significantly lower level of vitamin E (p 0.05). Pearson’s correlation coefficient suggested that there were some significant positive and negative correlations among these tested components. Our study reveals that GAD patients have considerably higher level of malondialdehyde, immunoglobulins and altered level of antioxidant vitamins. These findings may play a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of GAD patients.

Comparative analysis of serum malondialdehyde, antioxidant vitamins and immunoglobulin levels in patients suffering from generalized anxiety disorder.

The study was conducted to evaluate the serum immunoglobulin levels in patients suffering from panic disorder and to assess the relationship between the changes of immunoglobulin levels and the socioeconomic parameters, as well as nutritional status. 54 panic patients were randomly selected from the Department of Psychiatry, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh. Fifty two, age and gender matched healthy volunteers (42 males and 10 females, mean age of 30 ± 6 yrs) were also enrolled in this study. Immunoglobulin levels were measured by turbidimetry method using immunoglobulin kits. It was found that the mean serum immunoglobulin concentrations of IgG, IgM and IgA of panic disorder patients were 0.999±0.26 (g/L), 0.1±0.028 (g/L) and 0.194±0.066 (g/L) respectively whereas the values were 1.24± 0.39 ( g/L ), 0.096±0.022 ( g/L) , 0.194±0.053 (g/L) in healthy volunteers. IgG level in panic disorder patient was found significantly (p <0.05) lower than that of the controls but the change in concentration of IgM and IgA were not significant (p=0.497, p=0.962). Socioeconomic data reveals that most of the patients were from lower income group and educated. BMI (Mean±SD) of the patients (22.62 ± 3.74 kg/m2) and controls (23.74 ± 2.71 kg/m2) were well within the normal range. From correlative analysis it has been found that income has significant effect (p=0 .047) on the change of the serum IgG level in panic disorder patient and it was also been justified by the regression analysis (p=0.049). This finding may play a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of the panic disorder patients. Further studies have been suggested with a large number of populations to confirm these findings.

Immunoglobulin levels in panic disorder patients.

The serum concentration of zinc, copper, manganese and lead in 30 manic patients and 30 human volunteers were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. It was observed that the concentration of zinc in manic patients increased significantly (P 0.05). These concentrations of different trace elements may have some prognostic significance for the diagnosis of manic patients, but more work is suggested to find out the exact correlation between trace elements level & the degree of disorder in manic patients.

Serum Trace Elements in Manic Patients

The aim of this study was to determine the serum immunoglobulin concentration in both manic patients and in healthy volunteers. The study was conducted with 30 manic patients (24 males and 6 females, aged 55.4 ± 13.0 years); age and gender-matched, control subjects were enrolled. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was employed to analyze the serum immunoglobulin concentrations. IgG level was found to be 18.22±6.42 g/L in the manic patients, while it was 16.05 ± 3.45 g/l in the cohort controls (p=0.487). IgM and IgA concentrations were 6.025 ± 1.07 g/l and 1.41 ± 0.51 g/l in the manic patients, whereas those were 5.73 ± 1.63 g/l (p=0.688) and 0.837 ± 0.36 g/l (p=0.034) respectively in controls. From the results it was found that only the serum concentration of IgA was increased significantly (p=0.034) in manic patients while the concentrations of IgG and IgM remained unchanged. In many psychiatric disorders, immunoglobulin level has been found to be changed significantly. This study reveals that the concentration of IgA in manic patients increased significantly (p=0.034) which usually happens in case of many psychiatric patients. Further studies are suggested with larger population to find out the correlation between immunoglobulin level and degree of disorder and possibility of using as a diagnostic tool for the identification of this disease.
