Enhanced electrical capacitance of porous carbons by nitrogen enrichment and control of the pore structure

The high surface area activated carbon (AC) material for supercapacitor was characterized. The high surface area, high electrical conductivity and nanosized carbon black (CB) as conductive medium, the process of fabricating activated carbon/carbon black (AC/CB) composite electrode were described in detail. The capacitive characteristics of AC/CB composite electrode in aqueous electrolyte were systematically investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and constant current charge technique using a three-electrode system. The results show that BET specific surface area of AC is 1 654 m2/g, with reasonable pore size distribution (PSD). The AC/CB composite electrode exhibits excellent capacitive behavior and high power property. The specific capacitance of AC/CB composite material is 102.4 F/g. Moreover, effects of PSD on specific capacitance were explained.

Capacitive Characteristics of Activated Carbon/Carbon Black Composite Electrode for Supercapaictor

Waste medium density fibreboard (MDF) containing 12 % urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive prepared for nitrogen-enriched activated carbon electrodes were carbonized with different carbonized temperatures of 300, 400, 500 and 600°C primarily. And then activated carbons (ACs) were obtained by 16 h impregnation and 1 h activation agent of KOH at 800°C with KOH/coke mass ratio of 3. The ACs was investigated by porosity and elemental analysis. The results obtained by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis showed specific surface area of ACs varied from 455 to 1793 m2.g−1, and the total pore volume of ACs varied from 0.233 to 0.932 cm3.g−1, which was affected by different carbonization temperatures. Furthermore, electrochemical properties of electric double layer capacitors were studied. The results indicated that specific capacitances of activated carbon electrode ranged from 148 to 213 F.g−1. The good electrochemical capacities suggested that waste MDF could be used as a candidate material for electric double layer capacitor electrode.
