Effectiveness of carbon policies and multi-period delay-in-payments in a global supply chain under remanufacturing consideration

The study investigates the relationship between green production, green technology, waste reduction, energy use, and sustainability. A Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach was used for analysis. The data was collected from a sample of companies in the textile industry. The results suggest that green production and technology positively and significantly affect waste reduction and energy use, which mediates the positive relationship between these two factors and sustainability. This study concludes that green production and technology are critical drivers of sustainability and emphasizes the need to prioritize waste reduction and energy use in sustainable manufacturing practices. The study has practical and managerial implications in all production or manufacturing industries and provides a guideline for managers and policymakers to ensure sustainability. 

Green production and green technology for sustainability: The mediating role of waste reduction and energy use

• This work determines the circular economy index in a production system with carbon emission. • The goal is to achieve the manufacturer’s joint optimal circularity and production levels. • The optimal profit for the production system is studied analytically. • The model helps the manufacturer to increase profit and reduce the carbon emissions significantly. To proper use of the limited natural resources, circular economy is an efficacious and alternative approach to many production systems aimed at protecting the natural environment. This work proposes a profit maximizing production system where all the products are produced with a variable circularity level. As the consumers are increasingly social responsible about their consumption practices at present, both the clients’ demand and per unit gross profit are directly influenced by the products’ circularity level and these consequences are investigated by several linear and nonlinear forms. Moreover, the manufacturer’s several activities in the production system like setup operations, warehouse operations and production mechanism are sources of carbon emissions. The utmost aim of this work is to achieve the manufacturer’s joint optimal circularity and production levels with the ambition of environment protection by reducing carbon emissions with the help of proper operational amendments. The global maximum profit for the production manager is determined by exploiting the optimal policies analytically. Nine examples are solved not only to explore the applicability of the derived analytical results but also to investigate how the optimal policies under all considered cases help the manufacturer to increase profit and reduce the carbon emissions significantly. Finally, an analysis is conducted to provide guidelines for the industry manager examining the parameters’ behavioral patterns on the optimal strategies by altering values of the system parameters. This study helps electrical equipment manufacturers especially (for example, mobile manufacturers) to obtain the optimum circular index for the produced items so that they can earn maximum profits and also protect the environment.

 Offshore platforms and tubular structures are examples of lightweight supporting structures for oil and gas and wind energy production units. However, their reduced weight is obtained at the expense of increased susceptibility to fatigue failure because of their tubular welded joints or connections. Hence extra consideration must be given to the fatigue design of the hot spots. The objective of the proposed shell fatigue design methodology for critical jacket joints is to calibrate the fatigue reliability for inspection planning studies. This study summarises research on the development and use of reliability-based jacket joints inspection planning approaches for offshore structures. The main objective of the study is to reduce the uncertainty introduced by SCF calculations on crucial joints by modelling such joints as an FEM shell model. The study also provides an application process and workflow for a standard Arabian Gulf jacket for fatigue reliability assessment. First Order Reliability Method (FORM) is used to determine the reliability index. The study also provides insights into methods for planning in-service inspections of ageing offshore platforms.

Drawing upon the empirical scholarship and research expertise of contributors from all settled continents and from diverse life settings and economies, Viral Loads illustrates how the COVID-19 pandemic, and responses to it, lay bare and load onto people’s lived realities in countries around the world. A crosscutting theme pertains to how social unevenness and gross economic disparities are shaping global and local responses to the pandemic, and illustrate the effects of both the virus and efforts to contain it in ways that amplify these inequalities. At the same time, the contributions highlight the nature of contemporary social life, including virtual communication, the nature of communities, neoliberalism and contemporary political economies, and the shifting nature of nation states and the role of government. Over half of the world’s population has been affected by restrictions of movement, with physical distancing requirements and self-isolation recommendations impacting profoundly on everyday life but also on the economy, resulting also, in turn, with dramatic shifts in the economy and in mass unemployment. By reflecting on how the pandemic has interrupted daily lives, state infrastructures and healthcare systems, the contributing authors in this volume mobilise anthropological theories and concepts to locate the pandemic in a highly connected and exceedingly unequal world. The book is ambitious in its scope – spanning the entire globe – and daring in its insistence that medical anthropology must be a part of the growing calls to build a new world.
