Beliefs and Intention to Organ Donation in Saudi Arabia: An Online Cross-Sectional Survey

Background: People with mental illnesses commonly experience stigma, discrimination, and prejudice from the general public and medical professionals around the world. Numerous research has looked into the unfavourable perceptions that medical students have of those who suffer from mental illness. Objective: The objective was to study the attitude of undergraduate medical students towards patients with psychiatric illnesses. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among undergraduate medical students who were exposed (n = 69) to 2-week psychiatry posting and attended lectures and those who were not exposed (n = 163) to psychiatry training using self-reported Attitude Scale for Mental Illness (ASMI) questionnaire via Google form distributed among medical students. Results: The findings indicate there is no change in attitude toward the patient with psychiatric illness after exposure to psychiatry training among medical students. However, urban residence and female gender were the factors found to be influencing students' attitudes towards patients with psychiatric illnesses. Conclusions: There was no change in attitude towards patients with psychiatric illness after psychiatry exposure. Students belonging to urban domicile and female students showed more sympathetic attitudes toward those with mental illnesses.

Attitude towards patients with psychiatric illness among undergraduate medical students at Government Medical College: A cross-sectional study

Introductions The awareness of brain death and heart donation (HD) among the Saudi population remains limited, coupled with negative attitudes toward heart donation, resulting in a significant gap between the demand for donor hearts and the available supply. This study aimed to comprehensively understand the current perceptions, attitudes, and practices of the Saudi population regarding HD, as well as identify the obstacles. The ultimate goal was to strengthen the local donor pool. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to May 2023, employing a self-administered internet survey. The survey collected demographic information, assessed awareness, attitudes, and practices related to HD, and was completed by 1820 participants from various regions in Saudi Arabia. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 25 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, Illinois, USA). Chi-square test, Independent-samples t-test, one way analysis of variance test (ANOVA) and Spearman correlation coefficient was performed with the significance level set at p < 0.05. Results A significant portion of the population (out of 1820 participants) lacked organ donation cards and were uncertain about the registration process. Participants displayed a moderate level of knowledge about HD, with roughly half holding unfavorable attitudes toward HD. A considerable percentage of participants 62.0% were unwilling to register as heart donors, but a majority (79.9%) were willing to contribute by disseminating information about HD. The study identified significant associations between knowledge scores and several factors, including age (p = 0.002), career (p = 0.000), possession of an organ donation card (p = 0.000), and a history of transplantation or organ donation among relatives (p = 0.000). A significant relationship was observed between attitude scores and several factors, including career (p = 0.001), Saudi region (p = 0.025), possession of an organ donation card (p = 0.000), and a history of transplantation or organ donation among relatives (p = 0.000). Conclusion The study highlights the urgent need for increased awareness to bolster the number of local heart donors. The involvement of healthcare professionals and social campaigns is essential to enhance public knowledge and potentially boost the willingness of individuals to become donors.

Acceptance, Awareness, Attitude, and Practices toward Heart Transplantation: A Saudi Based Survey

Organ donation is a procedure in which an organ is surgically removed from a human to be transplanted into another. The need for organ transplantation is increasing with time, and thus, the gap in the awareness of organ donors about the process must be recognized. This study aims to raise awareness and perceptions regarding organ donation and transplantation among the adult population. 

Knowledge and Attitude Toward Organ Donation and Transplantation Among the Adult Population in Bisha, Saudi Arabia

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant health problem associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Awareness of CKD in people is crucial to decrease mortality, morbidity, and complications. CKD can lead to end-stage renal failure that needs renal transplantation. 
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the awareness of chronic kidney disease and the community's perception of organ donation and renal transplantation. 
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 503 Saudi adults between June and September 2022 in Riyadh Province of Saudi Arabia. We distributed online self-administered questionnaires among the general adult population utilizing convenient sampling.
Results: Most of the participants had university degrees (67.2%). Of the total, 40.6%, 24.5% and 29.2% of participants knew that painkillers, hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are risk factors for CKD, respectively. A significant relationship was observed between knowledge about risk factors of CKD and educational level (p<0.05), but an insignificant relation with gender (p>0.05). Most of the participants (53.3%) supported organ donation, and a significant relationship was observed with the gender and educational level of participants (p<0.05).
Conclusion: The current study showed low awareness of CKD and poor knowledge about kidney transplantation and organ donation in the community of Saudi Arabia. Mass media and campaigns can be central in raising awareness about CKD and organ donation to help facilitate disease identification and prevention.

Awareness of chronic kidney disease and the perception of the community towards organ donation and renal transplantation in Riyadh province of Saudi Arabia

Background Organ transplantation is recognized as a life-saving procedure for patients with potentially terminal illnesses. However, the population's awareness of organ donation and related issues is variable throughout the world. Objectives The study purposes to evaluate the knowledge and attitude toward organ donation among the adult population in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study on the general population in Jazan using the convenient sampling method. The questionnaire was composed of 21 items distributed over demographic characteristics, knowledge, and attitude domains. The knowledge and attitude domain levels were categorized into low, moderate, and high based on the scoring of its items. The data had been analyzed using SPSS software version 23 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Frequency and percentages were used to display categorical variables. Mean and standard deviation was used to present numerical variables. The independent t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) test were both used to test for factors associated with knowledge score and attitude score toward organ donation. Results A total of 1019 participants were included in the study. The majority were between the ages of 18 and 30 years and 3.4% of them were older than 50 years. Eighty percent of participants had a university level of education or higher and 48% were students. This survey showed that 493 (48.4%) had a moderate knowledge level of organ donation (total score between 50% and 75%) with younger age, being a student, and residence status associated with a higher level of knowledge while gender and the education levels were not. Five hundred one (49.2%) of the participants reported being in agreement with organ donation and 56 (5.5%) of them reported disagreement. Most of the participants exhibited a low positive attitude toward organ donation, with 592 (58.1%) of the participants (a total score less than 50%) (score of 4 and less). Young age and being a student were the factors associated with a positive attitude while gender, education levels, residence status, and monthly status were having no significant associations with the positive attitude toward organ donation. Conclusion This study concluded that study participants had a moderate level of knowledge and a low positive attitude toward organ donation. The advocacy in promoting organ donation should be increased through the use of appropriate mediums to change the attitudes and enhance the willingness of people.

Knowledge and Attitude Toward Organ Donation Among the Adult Population in Jazan, Saudi Arabia

Background: Acne is a common skin disease that typically manifests during puberty and can persist to adulthood. Even though acne is not a life-threatening condition, it has the potential to cause distress and adverse psychosocial consequences such as social phobia, poor self-esteem, and depression.
Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional survey design involving young females from Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using online surveys targeted Saudi young females. Data analysis involved the use of the R software.
Results: A total of 921 female participants were involved in this study. The mean age was 21.03 ± 2.41 years. Acne presence reported in 76.2%, scars from acne were reported in 67.4%. Worrying from acne was found to be 65.8%. Depression was found to be present in 58.63% of participants, anxiety was also found to be existing in 62.76%, and stress was found to be in 44.63% of participants.
Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of acne among young Saudi females. Having acne was not predictive of adverse psychological outcomes. Having scars from acne and bullying from acne influenced some or all the psychological outcomes.

The Association of Depression, Anxiety, and Stress with Acne and Acne Scars Among Young Females in Saudi Arabia: A Nationwide Study

Background: Mental illness is a serious condition requiring early intervention. This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude, practice, and stigma toward mental illness among university students in Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: An observational cross-sectional survey was conducted during the academic year 2018–2019 in a university in Saudi Arabia. Stratified random sampling was adopted to select students (n = 778). A standardized self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Results: The students had an adequate level of knowledge on mental illness (44.1%), and almost half of them had a positive attitude (52.2%) toward mental illness. The female students (55.9%) exhibited a significantly higher positive attitude than the males (48.4%) (P = 0.038). The students' knowledge level increased significantly with an increase in the academic year (P = 0.010). The students from urban places showed a significantly higher knowledge level (50.5%) than those from the rural areas (40.5%) (P = 0.007). The students from health-related colleges (59.7%) showed higher positive attitudes, but without statistical significance (P = 0.104) than those from other colleges. The female gender (Odds ratio (OR) = 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06–1.88, P = 0.020) was an important factor associated with positive attitudes. The important independent predictors of adequate mental illness knowledge were living in urban places (OR = 1.47, 95% CI, 1.09–1.98, P = 0.012) and studying in the sixth year (OR = 2.1, 95% CI, 1.1–3.9, P = 0.028). Conclusions: Although students showed a favorable attitude toward mental illness, their knowledge level can be improved. Research outcomes can be used to design health educational interventions to enhance university students' mental health literacy.
