The Internet of Things (IoT) interconnects physical and virtual objects embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies, which exchange data using the Internet. This technology allows billions of devices and people to communicate, share data, and personalize services to make our lives easier. Despite the multiple benefits offered by IoT, it may also represent a critical issue due its lack of information security. Since the number of IoT devices has been rapidly increasing all over the world, they have become a target for many attackers, who try to steal sensitive information and compromise people’s privacy. As part of the IoT environment, data and services should be protected with features such as confidentiality, accuracy, comprehensiveness, authentication, access control, availability, and privacy. Cybersecurity threats are unique to the Internet of Things, which has unique characteristics and limitations. In consideration of this, a variety of threats and attacks are being launched daily against IoT. Therefore, it is important to identify these types of threats and find solutions to mitigate their risks. Therefore, in this paper, we reviewed and identified the most common threats in the IoT environment, and we classified these threats based on three layers of IoT architecture. In addition, we discussed the most common countermeasures to control the IoT threats and mitigation techniques that can be used to mitigate these threats by reviewing the related publications, as well as analyzing the popular application-layer protocols employed in IoT environments and their security risks and challenges.

Cybersecurity Threats, Countermeasures and Mitigation Techniques on the IoT: Future Research Directions

Objective This review paper aims to evaluate existing solutions in healthcare authentication and provides an insight into the technologies incorporated in Internet of Healthcare Things (IoHT) and multi-factor authentication (MFA) applications for next-generation authentication practices. Our review has two objectives: (a) Review MFA based on the challenges, impact and solutions discussed in the literature; and (b) define the security requirements of the IoHT as an approach to adapting MFA solutions in a healthcare context. Methods To review the existing literature, we indexed articles from the IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink databases. The search was refined to combinations of ‘authentication’, ‘multi-factor authentication’, ‘Internet of Things authentication’, and ‘medical authentication’ to ensure that the retrieved journal articles and conference papers were relevant to healthcare and Internet of Things-oriented authentication research. Results The concepts of MFA can be applied to healthcare where security can often be overlooked. The security requirements identified result in stronger methodologies of authentication such as hardware solutions in combination with biometric data to enhance MFA approaches. We identify the key vulnerabilities of weaker approaches to security such as password use against various cyber threats. Cyber threats and MFA solutions are categorised in this paper to facilitate readers’ understanding of them in healthcare domains. Conclusions We contribute to an understanding of up-to-date MFA approaches and how they can be improved for use in the IoHT. This is achieved by discussing the challenges, benefits, and limitations of current methodologies and recommendations to improve access to eHealth resources through additional layers of security.

A review of multi-factor authentication in the Internet of Healthcare Things

Rapid development of the Internet of Everything (IoE) and cloud services offer a vital role in the growth of smart applications. It provides scalability with the collaboration of cloud servers and copes with a big amount of collected data for network systems. Although, edge computing supports efficient utilization of communication bandwidth, and latency requirements to facilitate smart embedded systems. However, it faces significant research issues regarding data aggregation among heterogeneous network services and objects. Moreover, distributed systems are more precise for data access and storage, thus machine-to-machine is needed to be secured from unpredictable events. As a result, this research proposed secured data management with distributed load balancing protocol using particle swarm optimization, which aims to decrease the response time for cloud users and effectively maintain the integrity of network communication. It combines distributed computing and shift high cost computations closer to the requesting node to reduce latency and transmission overhead. Moreover, the proposed work also protects the communicating machines from malicious devices by evaluating the trust in a controlled manner. Simulation results revealed a significant performance of the proposed protocol in comparison to other solutions in terms of energy consumption by 20%, success rate by 17%, end-to-end delay by 14%, and network cost by 19% as average in the light of various performance metrics.

Cloud-edge load balancing distributed protocol for IoE services using swarm intelligence

Internet of Things (IoT) applications are switching from general to precise in different industries, e.g., healthcare, automation, military, maritime, smart cities, transportation, logistics, and many more. In the healthcare domain, these applications have demonstrated an incredible improvement in patient assessment, monitoring, prescription, etc., with ease of access through the Internet. Despite its benefits, this technology also offers several security challenges for the research community and healthcare stakeholders, because of its wireless communication and open-area deployment. To explore, patient wearable devices and other networking entities follow unstructured communication format to share their accumulated data in the network, which makes them susceptible to manifold security threats. Considering the significance of these applications, data acquisition, processing, storage, and assessment on client and remote sides need a high standard of secure communication infrastructure. Therefore, security of these applications is one of the major obstacles that prevent their widespread use in different healthcare domains. To discuss different security constraints, in this article, we present a comprehensive survey of the theoretical literature from 2015 to 2023 to highlight the unresolved security problems of this emerging technology. Based on the evaluated literature pros and cons, we determine the security requirements and challenges of Healthcare-IoT (HC-IoT) applications. Following this, we demonstrate future research directions that could be useful for the researchers and industry stakeholders working in this domain. To demonstrate the uniqueness of this work and claim its contribution, we compare our work section-wise with previously published papers to answer the question of reviewers, editors, students, and readers, why this review article is required in the presence of already published review articles.

Healthcare Internet of Things: Security Threats, Challenges and Future Research Directions

Fresh data collection for UAV-assisted IoTs based on proximity-remote region collaboration

Data integrity and authenticity are among the key challenges faced by the interacting devices of Internet of Things (IoT). The resource-constrained nature of sensor-embedded devices makes it even more difficult to design lightweight security schemes for these networks. In view of limited resources of the IoT devices, this article proposes a lightweight and trustworthy device-to-server mutual authentication scheme for edge-enabled IoT networks. Initially, a trusted authority generates and assigns identities (IDs) and mask them to servers and clients, also known as member devices, in an offline phase. These IDs are utilized to prevent possible infiltration of the adversary device(s). Next, every device ensures the authenticity of requesting devices using a sophisticated challenge, which is encrypted using a 128-b secret key, $\lambda _{i}$. Each device expects a reply from the intended destination device for resolving the encrypted challenge within the defined timeframe, $i.e., \bigtriangleup T$. Moreover, authenticity of the requesting device is verified through the stored IDs, which are shared in the offline phase. Simulation results have verified the exceptional performance of the proposed authentication scheme against field proven approaches in terms of computational and communication costs.

A Trustworthy, Reliable, and Lightweight Privacy and Data Integrity Approach for the Internet of Things

Data redundancy or fusion is one of the common issues associated with the resource-constrained networks such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Internet of Things (IoTs). To resolve this issue, numerous data aggregation or fusion schemes have been presented in the literature. Generally, it is used to decrease the size of the collected data and, thus, improve the performance of the underlined IoTs in terms of congestion control, data accuracy, and lifetime. However, these approaches do not consider neighborhood information of the devices (cluster head in this case) in the data refinement phase. In this paper, a smart and intelligent neighborhood-enabled data aggregation scheme is presented where every device (cluster head) is bounded to refine the collected data before sending it to the concerned server module. For this purpose, the proposed data aggregation scheme is divided into two phases: (i) identification of neighboring nodes, which is based on the MAC address and location, and (ii) data aggregation using k-mean clustering algorithm and Support Vector Machine (SVM). Furthermore, every CH is smart enough to compare data sets of neighboring nodes only; that is, data of nonneighbor is not compared at all. These algorithms were implemented in Network Simulator 2 (NS-2) and were evaluated in terms of various performance metrics, such as the ratio of data redundancy, lifetime, and energy efficiency. Simulation results have verified that the proposed scheme performance is better than the existing approaches.

A Neighborhood and Machine Learning-Enabled Information Fusion Approach for the WSNs and Internet of Medical Things

Concurrent communication constitutes one of the challenging issues associated with IoT networks, as it is highly likely that multiple devices may start communication simultaneously. This issue has become more complex as devices belonging to the IoT networks increasingly become mobile. To resolve this issue, various mechanisms have been reported in the literature. However, none of these approaches has considered the neighborhood information of a server module to resolve this issue. In this paper, a neighborhood-based smart slot allocation scheme for the IoT is presented where member devices are mobile. In this scheme, every CH or server module is bound to maintain two different types of slots, i.e., dedicated and reserved. Dedicated slots are assigned to every device on a First-Come-First-Serve (FCFS) basis, whereas reserved slots are assigned to the migrated devices. Additionally, as long as a device Ci is located inside the server module’s coverage area, it is required to use these dedicated slots. Simulation results verified that the proposed neighborhood-based slot allocation scheme performed better than existing approaches and considerably improved various performance metrics, such as 20% in lifetime, 27.8% in slot allocation, and 30.50% in slot waiting time.
