Among the plant nutrients, potassium (K) is one of the vital elements required for plant growth and physiology. Potassium is not only a constituent of the plant structure but it also has a regulatory function in several biochemical processes related to protein synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, and enzyme activation. Several physiological processes depend on K, such as stomatal regulation and photosynthesis. In recent decades, K was found to provide abiotic stress tolerance. Under salt stress, K helps to maintain ion homeostasis and to regulate the osmotic balance. Under drought stress conditions, K regulates stomatal opening and helps plants adapt to water deficits. Many reports support the notion that K enhances antioxidant defense in plants and therefore protects them from oxidative stress under various environmental adversities. In addition, this element provides some cellular signaling alone or in association with other signaling molecules and phytohormones. Although considerable progress has been made in understanding K-induced abiotic stress tolerance in plants, the exact molecular mechanisms of these protections are still under investigation. In this review, we summarized the recent literature on the biological functions of K, its uptake, its translocation, and its role in plant abiotic stress tolerance.

Potassium: A Vital Regulator of Plant Responses and Tolerance to Abiotic Stresses

Crop productivity in cold waterlogged paddy fields can be constrained by chronic flooding stress and low temperature. Farmers typically use chemical fertilizer to improve crop production, but this conventional fertilization is not very effective in a cold waterlogged paddy field. Biochar amendment has been proposed as a promising management approach to eliminating these obstacles. However, little is known about the performance of biochar when combined with N fertilizer and P fertilizer in cold waterlogged soils. The aim of this study was, therefore, to assess the main effects and interactive effects of rice straw biochar, N and P fertilizer on rice growth and soil properties in a cold waterlogged paddy field. The field treatments consisted of a factorial combination of two biochar levels (0 and 2.25 t ha−1), two N fertilizer levels (120.0 and 180.0 kg ha−1) and two P fertilizer levels (37.5 and 67.5 kg ha−1) which were arranged in a randomized block design, with three replicates. Results confirmed that biochar application caused a significant increase in the soil pH due to its liming effect, while this application resulted in a significant decrease in soil exchangeable cations, such as exchangeable Ca, Mg, Al and base cations. The interactive effect of N fertilizer, P fertilizer and biochar was significant for soil total N. Moreover, a negative effect of biochar on the internal K use efficiency suggested that K uptake into rice may benefit from biochar application. According to the partial Eta squared values, the combined application of N fertilizer and biochar was as effective as pure P fertilization at increasing straw P uptake. The addition of biochar to farmers’ fertilization practice treatment (180.0 kg N ha−1, 67.5 kg P2O5 ha−1 and 67.5 kg K2O ha−1) significantly increased rice yield, mainly owing to improvements in grains per panicle. However, notable effects of biochar on rice yield and biomass production were not detected. More studies are required to assess the long-term behavior of biochar in a cold waterlogged paddy field. This study may lay a theoretical foundation for blended application of biochar with fertilizer in a cold waterlogged paddy field.

The Short-Term Effects of Rice Straw Biochar, Nitrogen and Phosphorus Fertilizer on Rice Yield and Soil Properties in a Cold Waterlogged Paddy Field

Present research was undertaken to understand the effect of long-term potassium (K) fertilization @ 0 kg (K 0 ) and 80 kg (K 80 ) K ha −1 on the quantity/intensity (Q/I) parameters for K in soil and characterize the Aeric Haplaquept soil for K supplying capacity under long-term continuous rice cropping. The study involved laboratory experiments on Q/I parameters of the soils in different depths (0–75 cm depth) from long-term K management experimental field. The Q/I parameters showed a linear relationship for both K omission and K fertilized soils at different depths. Omission of K decreased the equilibrium K concentration ratio (CR 0 K ) compared to K applied to the soil and slightly decreased the labile K (K L ) and non-specifically available K (-ΔK 0 ) but had no effect on specifically available K (K X ). The K omission increased the potential buffering capacity (PBC K ) compared to K fertilized soil. Potassium management had little effect on equilibrium exchangeable K (EK 0 ), magnitude of the conversion of added K to exchangeable pool (α) and non-exchangeable pool (β). However, equilibrium solution K (CK 0 ) in K omission soil was lower than K applied soil. β was higher than α in both the K management conditions. The PBC K for non-exchangeable pool was also higher than exchangeable pool both in K omission and K fertilized soils. Potassium management influenced critical solution K (CKr) and critical exchangeable K (EKr) but had no effect on minimum exchangeable K (Emin). Since the exchangeable K (EK), EKr and EK 0 is very close to Emin it is concluded that EKr and Emin should be consider in interpreting the K fertility specially the EK of soil under long-term wetland double rice cultivation.

Eight-year long potassium fertilization effects on quantity/intensity relationship of soil potassium under double rice cropping

Rice crops uptake large amounts of potassium (K), which is mainly supplied from inorganic fertilizer. Alternate K sources are essential to preserve natural reserves and to recycle unused K containing stubbles. We have evaluated the performance of rice straw (RS) in farmers’ field following integrated plant nutrient system (IPNS) for supplementing K requirement of rice and compared with agro-ecological zone (AEZ)-based chemical fertilizer and farmers’ practice in Tista Meander Floodplain soils of Bangladesh during 2013–2015. Application of RS @ 4.5 t ha−1 + IPNS-based fertilizer replaced full dose of chemical K fertilizer without significant reduction in grain yield of Boro rice. The K uptake with RS incorporation was similar to AEZ-based chemical fertilizer use. Considering soil health and environmental issue, RS + IPNS-based fertilizer management was the best option for growing wetland rice.
