Zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and selenium (Se) are well-known as essential trace elements. These elements attract a great interest, not only in the scientific world, but also in the public option. The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum Zn, Cu, and Se levels in healthy volunteers (60 females and 55 males) living in Tehran. The age (6–62 years) and sex of the subjects, as well as drug and tobacco consumption, were registered. The concentrations of these elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. The serum levels of Zn, Cu, and Se in the normal population of Tehran was 0.89 ± 0.16 mg/L, 0.95 ± 0.20 mg/L, and 99.10 ± 21.78 μg/L, respectively. There was no significant gender-related difference in serum Zn concentration (p < 0.15). However, a significant difference (p < 0.05) in both Cu and Se levels was observed between males and females.

Serum Levels of Antioxidants (Zn, Cu, Se) in Healthy Volunteers Living in Tehran

The purpose of the study was to determine the serum concentration of trace elements of panic disorder patients and to find out the relationship between trace element levels and nutritional status or socio-economic factors. The study was conducted among 54 panic disorder patients and 52 healthy volunteers. Patients were recruited from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by random sampling. Serum trace element concentrations were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (for Mg, Zn, Ca, and Cu) as well as graphite furnace (for Mn). Data were analyzed by independent t test, Pearson's correlation analysis, regression analysis, and ANOVA. The serum concentration of Mn, Zn, Ca, Cu, and Mg in panic disorder patients were 0.37 +/- 0.30, 0.67 +/- 0.20, 99.91 +/- 15.15, 0.83 +/- 0.23, and 21.14 +/- 3.72 mg/L, while those were 0.4163 +/- 0.2527, 0.86 +/- 0.3, 106.6073 +/- 18.6531, 0.8514 +/- 0.3646, and 21.37 +/- 2.03 mg/L in control subjects, respectively. The serum concentration of Zn decreased significantly (p = 0.001) in patient group. But the differences of the concentration of Mn, Ca, Cu, and Mg between patient and control group were not significant (p = 0.522, p = 0.065, p = 0.800, and p = 0.712, respectively). Socio-economic data reveal that most of the patients were very poor and middle aged. Mean BMIs of the control group (23.74 +/- 2.71 kg/m(2)) and the patient group (22.62 +/- 3.74 kg/m(2)) were within the normal range (18.5-25.0 kg/m(2)). There was no significant relationship between serum zinc level and BMI of patients (r = 0.038; p = 0.809). So the decreased level of serum zinc in panic disorder patients was not because of other reasons, but rather it may provide a prognostic tool for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

Comparative Analysis of Serum Manganese, Zinc, Calcium, Copper and Magnesium Level in Panic Disorder Patients

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate serum trace elements level, selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) at the diagnosis of acute leukemia, and also if there is any difference in their serum levels among various subtypes of disease Subjects: Fifty newly-diagnosed acute leukemia patients before starting therapy and fifty healthy subjects were entered into the study Methods: Serum trace elements level was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry technique Results: Serum selenium and zinc levels were significantly lower in patients than in healthy subjects The comparison of trace element levels in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) subtypes showed significant difference in Se levels between AML-M3 and AML-M5 There were no significant difference between Cu levels of patients and healthy subjects Conclusions: Low serum levels of Zn and Se in leukemia patients in this study can express the need for assessing the effect of improving trace elements status on patient`s overall survival A difference in Se levels between subgroups of AML patients warrants further investigation with larger sample size

Trace elements (Se, Zn, and Cu) levels in patients with newly diagnosed acute leukemia

Background: Thalassemia represents a serious health problem in Iran because of its heterogeneous frequency and the existing endogamy system. It is an inherited blood disease characterized by the under production of normal hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. Materials and Methods: In this study, serum antioxidants including selenium (Se), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) were measured using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) in children with beta-thalassemia major (n=40) and compared with the control group (n=40). Results: There were significant differences in the values of Se, Zn and Cu between the two groups. Se and Zn levels were 41.78±22.87 μg/l and 61.70±13.25 μg/dl in thalassemia, but 108.63±25.79 μg/l and 114.72±23.70 μg/dl in healthy children. Meanwhile, Cu levels were 156.60±22.62 and 102.88±31.15 μg/dl among patients and controls, respectively. Conclusion: This study shows that Se, Zn and Cu may play a role in the pathogenesis of beta-thalassemia major.

Serum Antioxidant Levels in Children with Beta-Thalassemia Major

Molybdenum (Mo) and zinc (Zn) are well-known bio-essential trace elements, and their anticarcinogenic activity has been researched. In this study, Mo and Zn concentrations were investigated in fingernails of 40 patients (20 males, 20 females, mean age 56.0 ± 13.4 years) with esophagus cancer and 46 healthy subjects (23 males, 23 females, mean age 53.6 ± 12.5 years) using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The average concentrations of Mo and Zn were 0.45 ± 0.37 and 136.8 ± 32.5 mg l –1 , respectively in the patients and 1.10 ± 1.09 and 310.9 ± 151.8 mg l –1 in the healthy population. Mo and Zn levels were found to be decreased in the patients affected by esophagus cancer compared with the control group (p < 0.01 and p < 0.0001, respectively). The content of Mo in the human nail is related to the Mo level in the environment. The soils and sediments greatly affect Mo concentrations in human. Increased dietary intake of Mo and Zn may decrease the risk of esophagus cancer.

Spectroscopic studies on molybdenum and zinc levels in fingernails of patients with esophagus cancer

The serum concentration of zinc, copper, manganese and lead in 30 manic patients and 30 human volunteers were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. It was observed that the concentration of zinc in manic patients increased significantly (P 0.05). These concentrations of different trace elements may have some prognostic significance for the diagnosis of manic patients, but more work is suggested to find out the exact correlation between trace elements level & the degree of disorder in manic patients.
