A procedure for the design and rating of plate-finned tube evaporator is proposed, to overcome limitations of both numerical and experiment based available present methods. The hybrid method allows to achieve high accuracy without incurring excessive computational cost and provides overall performance predictions starting from local analyses. The domain is divided into control volumes, where heat transfer is modeled by means of predictor equations obtained by known data. An iterative analytical method is used to find at each control volume the convergence between the heat transfer rates on both sides, and to obtain the distribution of wall temperature in the heat exchanger and the spatial distribution of the air mass flow rate. A case study is shown where in the first row the refrigerant completely evaporates, while this doesn't happen for the last one where the vapor quality at the outlet is 28% lower.

This paper reports a theoretical study of a conventional vapor compression air conditioner combined with a solar energy source. This system comprises two parts: the cooling mechanism and the solar heat source to operate it. Only the cooling machine part will be considered here, in which the refrigerant temperature leaving the immersed coil inside the storage tank can be calculated directly from the pressure–enthalpy diagram of the operating refrigerant. The investigation has been made using a new low global warming potential refrigerant that belongs to HFO family as an alternative to two high global warming potential refrigerants that belong to HFC family. These are R-1234ze(E) as an alternative to R-134a and R-410A. Comparisons between the classical vapor compression air conditioner and the solar assisted air conditioner and also between the selected refrigerants are investigated. The effects of the refrigerant temperature leaving the storage tank on the main performance parameters such as the coefficient of performance, the gain based on compression work, and the required condenser surface area are discussed.

Modelling pan evaporation using mean air temperature and mean pan evaporation relationship in middle south Saurashtra Region

A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the influence of fin pitch and relative humidity on the heat transfer performance of the fin-and-tube heat exchangers having plain fin geometry under dehumidifying conditions. The analysis is done using the ratio between the heat transfer coefficients in totally wet conditions and those in totally dry conditions using the appropriate correlations for both dry and wet conditions. For a constant relative humidity, it is found that the heat transfer coefficient increases with the increase of the air frontal velocity. By contrast, the fin efficiency decreases when the face velocity is increased. Apparently, this phenomenon is attributed to the path of condensate drainage. For the influence of relative humidity, the results showed an increase in heat transfer performance and a decrease in wet fin efficiency when relative humidity increases. This is due to the higher amount of mass transfer encountered at higher relative humidity. However, it is found that the effect of fin pitch on the heat transfer performance depends strongly on the face velocity. At lower frontal velocity the heat transfer increases with fin pitch. Conversely, an increase in fin pitch gives lower heat transfer coefficients when air velocity is increased.

The Influence of the Inlet Conditions on the Airside Heat Transfer Performance of Plain Finned Evaporator

Evaporation is difficult to measure experimentally over water surfaces; several techniques and models have been suggested and used in the past for its determination. There exists a multitude of methods for the measurement and estimation of evaporation. Evaporation pans provide one of the simplest, inexpensive, and most widely used methods of estimating evaporative losses. In the present study, the rate of evaporation starting from a water surface was calculated by modeling with application to dams in wet, arid and semi arid areas in Algeria. We calculate the evaporation rate from the pan using the energy budget equation which offers the advantage of an ease of use but our results do not agree completely with the measurements taken by the National Agency of areas carried out using dams located in areas of different climates. For that we develop a mathematical model to simulate evaporation. This simulation uses an energy budget on the level of a vat of measurement and a Computational Fluid Dynamics (Fluent).Our calculation of evaporation rate is compared then by the two methods and with the measures of areas in situ.

Evaluation of two methods for estimation of evaporation from Dams water in arid and semi arid areas in Algeria

This study presents a numerical investigation of the fin efficiency and temperature distribution of a plain fin with combined heat and mass transfer. Using the finite difference scheme the differential equation results from an energy balance on an element of the fin has been solved to obtain temperature distribution along the fin surface. The effects of variations in relative humidity, dry air and fin base temperatures, atmospheric pressure, and fin pitch on temperature distribution and also on fin efficiency are discussed.

Study on the Heat Transfer of the Rectangular Fin with Dehumidification: Temperature Distribution and Fin Efficiency

In the present work an investigation of the effects of the air frontal velocity, relative humidity and dry air temperature on the heat transfer characteristics of plain finned tube evaporator has been conducted. Using an appropriate correlation for the air side heat transfer coefficient the temperature distribution along the fin surface was calculated using a dimensionless temperature distribution. For a constant relative humidity and bulb temperature, it is found that the temperature distribution decreases with increasing air frontal velocity. Apparently, it is attributed to the condensate water film flowing over the fin surface. When dry air temperature and face velocity are being kept constant, the temperature distribution decreases with the increase of inlet relative humidity. An increase in the inlet relative humidity is accompanied by a higher amount of moisture on the fin surface. This results in a higher amount of latent heat transfer which involves higher fin surface temperature. For the influence of dry air temperature, the results here show an increase in the dimensionless temperature parameter with a decrease in bulb temperature. Increasing bulb temperature leads to higher amount of sensible and latent heat transfer when other conditions remain constant.
