Multi-scale variation in spatial heterogeneity for microbial community structure in an eastern Virginia agricultural field.
Rima B. Franklin,Aaron L. Mills +1 more
TL;DR: Kriging was used to generate maps of the spatial organization of communities across the plot, and the results demonstrated that bacterial distributions can be highly structured, even within a habitat that appears relatively homogeneous at the plot and field scale.

Enumeration of petroleum-degrading marine and estuarine microorganisms by the most probable number method.
TL;DR: All strains of oil-degrading microorganisms examined in this study were lipolytic, but the converse was not always true, and the oil-amended agar permits growth of organisms which do not degrade crude oil.

Role of seagrasses and mangroves in estuarine food webs: temporal and spatial changes in stable isotope composition and amino acid content during decomposition
TL;DR: Data suggest a different mode of decomposition for mangroves and seagrasses when decaying under similar conditions, and the D"C of consumers is closely coupled to the dominant carbon source in each estuary.

Nitrate Reduction In Streambed Sediments: Effects Of Flow And Biogeochemical Kinetics
Chuanhui Gu,Chuanhui Gu,George M. Hornberger,Aaron L. Mills,Janet S. Herman,Samuel A. Flewelling +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of retention time on redox sequences along the hydrological flow path of groundwater discharging through low-relief coastal stream sediments and the subsequent impact on the fate of NO3 carried in the groundwater was examined in two intact cores.
