Van der Waals heterostructures

Polymorphic 2D materials allow structural and electronic phase engineering, which can be used to realize energy-efficient, cost-effective, and scalable device applications. The phase engineering covers not only conventional structural and metal-insulator transitions but also magnetic states, strongly correlated band structures, and topological phases in rich 2D materials. The methods used for the local phase engineering of 2D materials include various optical, geometrical, and chemical processes as well as traditional thermodynamic approaches. In this Review, we survey the precise manipulation of local phases and phase patterning of 2D materials, particularly with ideal and versatile phase interfaces for electronic and energy device applications. Polymorphic 2D materials and diverse quantum materials with their layered, vertical, and lateral geometries are discussed with an emphasis on the role and use of their phase interfaces. Various phase interfaces have demonstrated superior and unique performance in electronic and energy devices. The phase patterning leads to novel homo- and heterojunction structures of 2D materials with low-dimensional phase boundaries, which highlights their potential for technological breakthroughs in future electronic, quantum, and energy devices. Accordingly, we encourage researchers to investigate and exploit phase patterning in emerging 2D materials.

Revisiting Intercalation-Induced Phase Transitions in 2D Group VI Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 is one of the most representative materials of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) family, which is mostly studied in the semiconductor 2H and metal 1T phases. However, the properties of the metalloid 1T′ phase remain unclear because of its immature preparation process and thermodynamic instability (metastable state). Herein, this study used theoretical calculations to discover the relationship and conditions for MoS2 to transition between the 2H, 1T, and 1T′ phases. Meanwhile, charge and discharge voltages and current density were controlled by ion insertion technology, and then 1T′-MoS2 with large size and definite morphology (the whole process was called “phase transition engineering”) was prepared. The prepared 1T′-MoS2 was used as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries. Compared with 2H-MoS2, the cyclic stability and specific capacity of 1T′-MoS2 were greatly improved. In addition, phase transformation of natural molybdenite (2H-MoS2) by phase transition engineering also yielded promising electrochemical properties. Consequently, phase transition engineering not only provided an opportunity for the phase transformation of TMDs of natural sulfide metals such as molybdenite but also offered an effective method to investigate the properties of 2D metastable polymorphic materials. 

Phase Transformation of 1T′-MoS2 Induced by Electrochemical Prelithiation for Lithium-Ion Storage

The intercalation-induced phase transition of MoS2 from the semiconducting 2H to the semimetallic 1T' phase has been studied in detail for nearly a decade; however, the effects of a heterointerface between MoS2 and other two-dimensional (2D) crystals on the phase transition have largely been overlooked. Here, ab initio calculations show that intercalating Li at a MoS2-hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) interface stabilizes the 1T phase over the 2H phase of MoS2 by ∼100 mJ m -2, suggesting that encapsulating MoS2 with hBN may lower the electrochemical energy needed for the intercalation-induced phase transition. However, in situ Raman spectroscopy of hBN-MoS2-hBN heterostructures during the electrochemical intercalation of Li+ shows that the phase transition occurs at the same applied voltage for the heterostructure as for bare MoS2. We hypothesize that the predicted thermodynamic stabilization of the 1T'-MoS2-hBN interface is counteracted by an energy barrier to the phase transition imposed by the steric hindrance of the heterointerface. The phase transition occurs at lower applied voltages upon heating the heterostructure, which supports our hypothesis. Our study highlights that interfacial effects of 2D heterostructures can go beyond modulating electrical properties and can modify electrochemical and phase transition behaviors.
