The production and quality of tomato seedlings needs many growth factors and production requirements besides controlling the phytopathogens. Paclobutrazol (PBZ) has benefit applications in improving crop productivity under biotic stress (Alternaria solani, the causal agent of early blight disease in tomatoes). In the current study, the foliar application of PBZ, at rates of 25, 50, and 100 mg L−1, was evaluated against early blight disease in tomatoes under greenhouse conditions. The roles of PBZ to extend tomato seedling lives and handling in nurseries were also investigated by measuring different the biochemical (leaf enzymes, including catalase and peroxidase) and histological attributes of tomato seedlings. Disease assessment confirmed that PBZ enhanced the quality of tomato seedlings and induced resistance to early blight disease post inoculation, at 7, 14, and 21 days. Higher values in chlorophyll content, enzyme activities, and anatomical features of stem (cuticle thickness) and stomata (numbers and thickness) were recorded, due to applied PBZ. This may support the delay of the transplanting of tomato seedlings without damage. The reason for this extending tomato seedling life may be due to the role of PBZ treatment in producing seedlings to be greener, more compact, and have a better root system. The most obvious finding to emerge from this study is that PBZ has a distinguished impact in ameliorating biotic stress, especially of the early blight disease under greenhouse conditions. Further studies, which consider molecular variables, will be conducted to explore the role of PBZ in more detail.

Variabilities in alkaloid concentration of Sceletium tortuosum (L.) N.E. Br in response to different soilless growing media and fertigation regimes in hydroponics.

The study was conducted in March-May 2020 in greenhouse in Erzincan Horticultural Research Institute. Sahra F1 variety of watermelon (Citrulus lanatus) was used as plant material in the experiment. In this study, the effects of different doses (0, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 and 175 ppm) of Tebuconazole substance on the quality and development of watermelon seedlings were investigated. It was determined that different dose applications caused a significant change in seedling characteristics According to the data obtained, a average reduction of 38.45% and 17.81% was achieved in seedling length and stem length, respectively, compared to the control application. Also, the stem diameter increased in 3.03% after the applications. The all doses applications also provided an increase in leaf chlorophyll content (SPAD). In this study, applications of Tebuconazole at different doses were found to control the seedling height in watermelon and positively affected on specific quality characteristics of seedlings.

New Approach in Obtaining the Ideal Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) Seedling: Tebuconazole

The rainy seasons have been becoming irregular and unpredictable under global warming now. This usually makes seedling preparation more difficult to match transplanting. Here applications of plant growth regulators, paclobutrazol (PBZ) and gibberellins (GA3) were studied with two trials to regulate growth of Betula alnoides Buch. Ham. ex D. Don container seedlings for the purpose of improving their quality when transplanting delayed. In the first trial five treatments (coded as P1 to P5) were laid out with total dosages of 0 mg (control), 2 mg, 6 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg PBZ per seedling to assess inhibitory effects of PBZ on growth of B. alnoides seedlings. After four and a half months, the second trial was carried out on the seedlings from the optimized PBZ treatments to detect growth recover of the seedlings by GA3, in which four treatments were arranged with GA3 dosages being 0, 1/10, 1/5 and 1/3 of the optimized paclobutrazol amounts applied. PBZ applications resulted in a significant decrease of height and root collar diameter growth since approximately one and two months after being treated, respectively. Among these treatments, P5 was the best one in controlling seedling growth, and its inhibitory effects lasted more than four and half months. PBZ treatments differed obviously in total seedling biomass from the control at 96 and 132 days after treatment (dat), and allocated more ratio of biomass into roots. Their root/shoot ratios increased and leaf areas decreased considerably with increasing PBZ dosage, while only P5-treated seedlings showed remarkable difference from the control in chlorophyll contents. The GA3 recovery showed that 15-day height increments of seedlings treated with GA3 were twice more than that without GA3 treatment, and did not differ significantly from the control without PBZ and GA3 treatment. It is concluded that the combined application of PBZ and GA3 can be recommended as a potential tool for regulating growth of B. alnoides seedlings, making it flexible to growing seedlings in the nursery.

Regulating Growth of Betula alnoides Buch. Ham. ex D. Don Seedlings with Combined Application of Paclobutrazol and Gibberellin

ABSTRACT Some vegetables have been used as an innovation in the ornamental plant market, such as cauliflower, which has well-defined morphological traits. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of paclobutrazol, applied via soil, in order to produce cauliflower for ornamental purposes. The design used was completely randomized with five treatments and seven replicates. The treatments consisted of doses of the growth regulator paclobutrazol (PBZ) (0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0 mg dm-3) and the control (without application). For vegetative growth, we evaluated number of leaves, stem diameter, plant height, leaf area, total chlorophyll, flavonoid index, and nitrogen balance. For production, we evaluated fresh mass of shoot and root, fresh and dry weight, diameter and length of the inflorescences. The application of PBZ promoted significant changes in the development of the cauliflower, resulting in more compact plants, with shorter stems, smaller leaves and a more intense green color (visual observation), and also early inflorescence emission. The authors verified higher fresh and dry weight, diameter and longer inflorescence with application of 0.5 mg dm-3 of PBZ, demonstrating the potential of PBZ to obtain mini cauliflower to serve the potted plant market.
