A number of polymethylene sulfide and polymethylene oxide polymers have been synthesized in order to study the influence of sulfur and oxygen atoms on melting temperature and rate of crystallization. Substituting oxygen for sulfur lowers the melting temperature but does not markedly change the rate of crystallization. In the copolymers of structure [(CH2)4S(CH2)mS]x the melting temperature and the rate of crystallization do not depend on the distribution of sulfur in the chain but only upon the carbon/sulfur ratio.

Efficient procedures were developed for the synthesis of N-aryl-1,5,3-dithiazepanes and N-aryl-1,5,3-dithiazocanes by cyclocondensation of anilines with formaldehyde and α,ω-dithiols (etane-1,2-dithiol and propane-1,3-dithiol), as well as by transamination of N-tert-butyl-1,5,3-dithiazepane or N-tert-butyl-1,5,3-dithiazocane with aromatic amines in the presence of samarium and cobalt complexes.

Here we provide new experimental results on multicomponent reactions of amines with aldehydes and H2S in the directed synthesis of functionally-substituted 1,3-thiazetidines, 1,3,5-dithiazinanes, 1,3,5-thiadiazinanes, 1,5-dithia-3,7-diazacyclooctanes, and thioaza macrocycles. X-ray analysis gave insight into the structure of the synthesized compounds. New kinds of multicomponent reactions (MCR) have been discovered and characterized.
