In this paper a modular package, named COMPELL, for the solution of two-variable time-varying problems of the elliptic type is presented. The package allows the solution of standard magnetic problems, also under quasi-stationary or rapidly time-varying conditions, in the cases with nonlinear, anisotropic and nonhomogeneous materials with eddy currents, but can also face different problems, taking into account for instance the presence of moving bodies or the reciprocal interaction between magnetic fields, thermal fields and so on. The procedures used for field solution are generalized finite differences, least square finite differences, first presented in this paper, or finite elements. In the paper examples of magnetic field solutions are given, in particular by showing the field in a Tokamak structure accounting for the Hall effect. The data deck and the obtained results are displayed and the main features of the package are discussed.

A user oriented modular package for the solution of general field problems under time varying conditions

WEMAP (Westinghouse Electric and Magnetic Analysis Program) is a general purpose system for electromagnetic analysis. It is being developed at the Westinghouse Electric Corp. and is currently running on a Prime 450 at the R&D center. The purpose of WEMAP is to provide design engineers with a simple set of tools to evaluate their electromagnetic designs. This paper describes the system and its preprocessor, executive, analysis and postprocessor modules. A nonlinear magnetostatic problem is shown as an example.

A program for the generation of a polycentric grid which fosters the application of numerical methods of computing magnetic fields in electrical power engineering is described. To achieve a still faster convergence of the finite difference method developed at the University of Colorado [1,2,3], a new complementary dynamic acceleration with an iteration degree larger than one is introduced. Estimates of truncation errors based on first-and second-order approximations of the potentials show that the error approaches zero asymptotically with increasing number of grid points.

Computer Generated Polucentric Grid Design and a Novel Dynamic Acceleration of Convergence for the Iterative Solution of Magnetic Fields Based on the Finite Difference Method

A grid optimization iterative procedure is presented in the paper. It represents the first step of a two step algorithm and is named grid iteration method. Together with the second step, named metric iteration method, it has been developed previously by the authors for simple examples and has been proven to be potentially very efficient. In this paper the grid iteration method is further developed. It is extended to problems with various unknowns; more efficient techniques are developed in order to apply the method to more complex geometries, to improve the convergence tests and to better solve magnetic problems.

Finite difference and finite element grid optimization by the grid iteration method

In this paper, the optimization procedures developed recently by the author and coworkers for finite difference and finite element methods are applied to magnetic problems. The grid optimization procedure is used to improve the precision of the results by iteratively improving the grid nodes distribution on the basis of previous solutions of the problem, whereas the metric optimization procedure aims to solve the same problem by using previous solutions in order to iteratively improve the coordinate system in which discretization is to be performed. The improvement in precision obtained for a given number of nodes should allow the same precision to be obtained by means of fewer nodes, thus reducing computer costs, time and memory requirements. In this sense, the author's experience with the two optimization methods has given satisfactory results with both FDM and FEM, often allowing a strong reduction in costs and computer resources needed to obtain the same precision of results.

Grid and metric optimization in finite difference and finite element methods in magnetic problems

This paper describes a program for the solution of boundary-value problems of the elliptic type by means of the finite-element method and a generalized finite-difference method developed by the authors. The program is oriented toward the reduction of input operations to those strictly needed to define a given problem physically, and it has been designed to allow automatic grid optimization. The generalized finite-difference method can handle completely irregular grids, and allows the discretization of any form of second-order elliptic equation under general boundary and interface conditions. To show the potentiality of the method, an example of magnetic field problem with sharp boundary, non-homogeneous anisotropic material and non-uniform current density distribution is presented, and the results are compared with the theoretical solution. Finally, the results obtained and the potentiality of the program are discussed.
