Particle treatment in a commercial inductively coupled plasma torch with a non-axisymmetric reaction chamber has been studied using a three-dimensional numerical model, including particle turbulent dispersion. Computations have been performed for two different coil current frequencies (3 and 13.56?MHz), showing that for lower frequencies particle trajectories deviate from their initial axial direction as a consequence of non-axisymmetric thermo-fluid-dynamic fields: these effects arise when the first and last coil turns induce unbalanced Lorentz forces in the discharge that prevail over fluid-dynamic inertia. For higher frequencies, almost axial particle trajectories have been predicted.Moreover, computations for different mass flow rates of the precursor particles and for different axial positions of the injection probe are shown, these parameters having an important influence on the effectiveness of the powder treatment process.

Three-dimensional investigation of particle treatment in an RF thermal plasma with reaction chamber

We have developed and studied a powerful high-enthalpy (H ≥ 20 kJ/g) air plasma jet generator with a divergent channel of the output electrode, which belongs to the class of dc plasmatrons with a thermionic cathode. The plasma generator possesses an efficiency of about 80% and ensures the formation of slightly divergent (2± = 12°) plasma jet with diameter D = 50 mm and a mass-average temperature of 6000–9000 K.

The degradation of 4-chlorobenzoic acid (4-CBA) in water was performed using an innovative plasma dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) process. The influence of the electrode material directly in contact with the solution was examined. The roles of power and frequency discharge on the treatment efficiency were also evaluated. The hydrodynamic behavior of the solution and physical aspect of the discharge were studied by contact angle measurements and intensified charge-coupled device (iCCD) acquisition, respectively. Analyses showed that the use of stainless steel (SS) resulted in a better efficiency of the process compared with the use of brass (B). The degradation of 4-CBA was 80 and 50% for SS and B, respectively, after 1 h of plasma discharge. The presence of NOx in the plasma discharge and corrosion reaction occurring on the brass surface limited the degradation of the 4-CBA. It was possible to observe two main byproducts and identify the 4-chlorosalicylic acid or 4-chlorohydroxybenzoic acid. Ultimately, the discharge frequency was reduced to limit the production of NOx species.

Degradation of 4-Chlorobenzoïc Acid in a Thin Falling Film Dielectric Barrier Discharge Reactor

This work represents a study of the formation and propagation of the streamer during a pulse in a plasma cell with dielectric barriers containing a Ne/Xe gas mixture. It is based on a longitudinal mono-dimensional model of the dielectric barrier discharge. In this model, we show the possibility of streamers development in the cathode sheath and its propagation during the plasma formation stage. The model gives the spatiotemporal variations of the propagation speed, the electric field, and the charged particle density of the streamer's head.

Investigation of the development of dielectric-barrier discharge instabilities in excimer lamp

Electrostatic precipitators based on corona discharge are a research hotspot in recent years. It is of great significance to investigate the characteristics of corona discharge under different system parameters for improving the dust removal efficiency. In this manuscript, the continuity equations coupled with Poisson’s equation are solved by the finite element method (FEM) to explore the different mechanisms of the generation of Trichel pulses when hyperboloid and hemispherical electrodes are used in negative corona discharges for a needle-plate configuration under atmospheric pressure. The fitting curve of the Trichel pulse frequency versus systematic macro parameters, including the applied voltage, the needle tip radius and the needle-plate distance, are given and their mechanisms are analyzed. Subsequently, the features of the Trichel pulses of the hyperboloid electrode and the hemispherical electrode at similar power are compared. Comparison of discharge mechanism of negative corona between hyperboloid and hemispherical electrodes

The European Union is creating strict standards for air and water pollution and waste treatment and implementing aggressive regulations. Compliance with these regulations is impossible without the development of new depollution processes involving plasma or laser technology. Time is one of the major problems in monitoring pollutants with the use of the time-resolution laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy technique, which can perform online analysis without sampling with a high level sensitivity for all the species of the Periodic Table. Plasma-enhanced desorption from fly ashes or polluted soils associated with a mass spectrometer or an optical emission spectrometer allows the monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and organochlorine species in a few seconds. In the last DBD point, we present the treatment of VOCs in air by the plasma technique in order to destroy or trap PAH molecules.
