The nature of crust and lithospheric mantle evolution of the Archean shields and their subsequent destruction through intraplate tectonic processes are important in understanding continental dynamics and resources. The Indian shield, which has remained dynamic throughout the past for more than three billion years of geological history, is unique in terms of its lithospheric architecture compared to other Archean terranes on the globe. It consists of five major cratons, the Dharwar, Singhbhum, Bundelkhand, Bastar and Aravalli, which are separated by active rift valleys, mega lineaments and sutures zones. Here, we present a detailed analysis of gravity field over these areas, and their possible relationship with lithospheric thickness variations. Our results show a large variation in residual gravity field among the different cratons. A highly negative anomaly of around -70 mGal occurs over the western part of the Dharwar Craton, beneath which the lithosphere is about 160–200 km thick. In comparison, the anomalies are conspicuously positive, reaching around (i) +10 mGal over Central Dharwar Craton, Eastern Ghats Belt and the eastern part of Singhbhum Craton, (ii) +35 mGal over the Nellore Schist and Aravalli-Delhi Fold Belts, and (iii) +60 to +70 mGal over eastern part of SGT. In these regions, the lithosphere is markedly thinner between 70 and 135 km. Such areas have been associated with episodic magmatism, moderately high heat flow and elevated Moho temperatures, indicating a large-scale upwarping of isotherms leading to lithospheric destruction to the tune of 100–150 km, caused by mechanical, thermal and chemical erosion. Our study confirms that many of the Archean cratons on the globe, like the Indian shield, have undergone substantial erosion of their roots through subsequent geotectonic processes. 

Regional gravity field distribution over cratonic domains of the Indian shield: Implications for lithospheric evolution and destruction

The North Singhbhum Mobile Belt (NSMB) that lies in the Eastern Indian Shield between the Chotanagpur Granite‐Gneiss Complex (CGGC) and the Singhbhum Craton (SC) provides a unique opportunity to understand the Proterozoic crustal evolution of the Indian shield. In the present study, an integrated interpretation of petrophysical, Bouguer gravity, and aeromagnetic data was carried out to examine the crustal architecture and structural framework of the region. Three‐dimensional (3‐D) inversion of the aeromagnetic anomalies reveals that the magnetic basement depths range from 0.2 to 9.0 km in the region. The crustal models obtained from two‐dimensional (2‐D) and 3‐D forward modelling of potential field data reveal the Moho at 37–38 km depth beneath the NSMB and at a relatively deeper depth of 39–40 km and 40–44 km beneath SC and CGGC, respectively. Further, the distinct gravity high and the coinciding bipolar magnetic anomalies associated with the Dalma Formation can be attributed to the mafic/ultramafic intrusions. Gravity models across the Singhbhum Shear Zone (SSZ) and South Purulia Shear Zone (SPSZ) exhibit the crustal density inhomogeneity and Moho offset, typical of ancient suture zones of Precambrian terrains. In comparison, the absence of such crustal‐scale signatures across the North Purulia Shear Zone represents its intracratonic nature. Further, the Bouguer gravity and aeromagnetic signatures across the SPSZ, together with the crustal architecture and metamorphic ages, suggest that SPSZ marks the eastward continuity of the Gavilgarh‐Tan Shear Zone along which the amalgamation of northern and southern Indian cratonic blocks possibly took place at ca. 1.0–0.9 Ga.

Crustal architecture of North Singhbhum Mobile Belt, Eastern Indian Shield: Constraints from two‐dimensional and three‐dimensional modelling of Bouguer gravity and aeromagnetic data

There is considerable controversy regarding the long-term strength of continents (Te). While some authors obtain both low and high Te estimates from the Bouguer coherence and suggest that both crust and mantle contribute to lithospheric strength, others obtain estimates of only <25 km using the free-air admittance and suggest that the mantle is weak. At the root of this controversy is how accurately Te can be recovered from coherence and admittance. We investigate this question by using synthetic topography and gravity anomaly data for which Te is known. We show that the discrepancies stem from comparison of theoretical curves to multitaper power spectral estimates of free-air admittance. We reformulate the admittance method and show that it can recover synthetic Te estimates similar to those recovered using coherence. In light of these results, we estimate Te in Fennoscandia and obtain similar results using both techniques. Te is 20-40 km in the Caledonides, 40-60 km in the Swedish Svecofennides, 40-60 km in the Kola peninsula, and 70-100 km in southern Karelia and Svecofennian central Finland. Independent rheological modeling, using a xenolith-controlled geotherm, predicts similar high Te in central Finland. Because Te exceeds crustal thickness in this area, the mantle must contribute significantly to the total strength. Te in Fennoscandia increases with tectonic age, seismic lithosphere thickness, and decreasing heat flow, and low Te correlates with frequent seismicity. However, in Proterozoic and Archean lithosphere the relationship of Te to age is ambiguous, suggesting that compositional variations may influence the strength of continents.
