Bir sosyal egitim yontemi olarak ve bir deger olarak duyarlilik, cagdas dunyada onemi gittikce artan bir olgudur. Sosyal bilgiler egitiminin amaclarindan birisi de bireylerin hayatin icinden olaylara ve durumlara duyarli olmasidir. Bu calismada, ilkogretim ogrencilerinin sosyal problemlere iliskin duyarliliklarini belirlemede kullanilabilecek bir olcek gelistirmek amaclanmistir. Arastirmaya Aksaray il merkezinde 7 ilkogretim okuluna devam eden 1035 altinci, yedinci ve sekizinci sinif ogrencisi katilmistir. Olcegin gelistirilme surecinde oncelikle literatur taramasi yapilmis ve sosyal problemlerle ilgili oldugu dusunulen 60 maddelik bir madde havuzu olusturulmustur. Uzman gorusleri dogrultusunda 47 maddeye indirilen olcme araci, 242 ogrenci uzerinde on uygulama yapilmistir. Elde edilen bulgular dogrultusunda olcekteki madde sayisinin 24 olmasina karar verilmistir. Olcme araci, 7 ilkogretim okulunda ogrenim goren 6, 7 ve 8. sinif ogrencilerinden basit seckisiz orneklem yontemi ile secilmis 1035 ogrenciye uygulanmistir. Hesaplanan KMO degeri (0.966) ve Barlett testi sonuclari (X2=11390; p<0.01) orneklem buyuklugunun faktor analizi yapmak icin "yeterli" oldugu gostermistir. "SDO" olcegi icin yapilan faktor analizi sonucunda, 24 maddeden olusan tek faktorlu bir yapinin ortaya ciktigi gorulmustur. "SDO" olceginin guvenirlik analizi icin, Cronbach alpha katsayisi hesaplanmis ve test yarilama islemi yapilmistir. Elde edilen bulgular olcegin ilkogretim ogrencilerinin sosyal problemlere olan duyarlilik duzeylerini belirlemede kullanilabilecegini gostermektedir.

Development of Social Sensitivity Scale for primary school students

In Turkey, the social studies course, which is taught in elementary 5th to 7th grades, prepares students to solve problems they may encounter in their future life. Therefore, the teaching of social problems to help students get to know them is one of the most important issues for the social studies course. The primary aim of this study is to examine how social problems are included in the social studies coursebooks and workbooks. 5th, 6th and 7th grade social studies coursebooks and workbooks were analysed in the study. Document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used in data analysis. The findings of the study showed that the coursebooks and workbooks of the Ministry of National Education included and emphasized more social problems than those of the private publishing companies. Based on the findings, it is suggested that social studies coursebooks and workbooks published by private publishing companies should be modified in such a way that they include and emphasize more social problems.

Social Problems in Turkish Social Studies Coursebooks and Workbooks

Purpose: The main purpose of this research isto understand pre-service social studies teachers’ perceptions of social problems. Design/Methodology/Approach: The phenomenological design was employed in order to investigate pre-service social studies teachers’ perceptions of social problems. Participants are consisted of eight pre-service social studies teachers. Data was obtained in the fall semester in 2016-2017 academic year. Semi-structured interviews were used as data collection tool. The inductive analysis approach was adopted to analysis data. Findings: As a result of the research, it was revealed that there are similarities between the pre-service social studies teachers’ perceptions of social problems and functionalist (structuralist), confrontational, symbolic interactionist and social constructivist theories. Highlights: It was concluded that pre-service social studies teachers’ perceptions of social problem are shaped by different resources such as family, culture, political groups, and mass media. Besides, it was found that pre-service social studies teachers did not feel that they have enough skills and experiences about how to teach social problems in the courses.
