The Sayan and Tunka faults are located at the boundary between the northernmost mountain belt of Central Asia (the Sayan-Baikal ranges) and the Siberian platform. These prominent crustal structures were involved in the opening of the southern Baikal rift system since the beginning of the Cenozoic and define large-scale sharp morphotectonic features. Despite low instrumental seismic activity, Late Pleistocene-Holocene morphotectonic features along the two faults indicate that the faults are active and have the capacity to produce strong earthquakes. A careful mapping of the most recent trace of activity, within the southeastern parts of the two faults where they merge within a relay zone, demonstrates that they correspond now to left-lateral-reverse faults, suggesting a recent inversion of their vertical component. We also show that the two faults are now structurally connected via a young surface rupture and that no obvious post-Last Glacial Maximum ruptures are observed along the central part of the Sayan Fault beyond its junction zone with the Tunka fault. This suggests that the left-lateral strike-slip deformation is transferred from the eastern Sayan fault to the Tunka fault. A detailed morphotectonic study along the southeastern Sayan fault allows estimating a left-lateral slip rate between 1.3 (min) and 3.9 mm/year (max). Finally, a critical review of Russian paleoseismic data, combined with our paleoseismological investigations, allows us to propose that the mean recurrence time along the two faults is on the order of 4 kyr and that they may have either ruptured together or during seismic clusters.

The Gunzhin system of NE-trending active faults is described on the basis of results of special seis-motectonic studies carried out for the first time around Ulan Bator, Mongolia. This system crosses watershed parts of stream valley. It is named after one of them. The total length of the fault segment traced on aerial photos is 15–20 km. In valleys of some temporary stream flows there are considerable visible horizontal displacements attaining 20–25 m, which testify to the right lateral slip (Khundullun River). Revealed structural parageneses of thrusts and overthrusts, divergent as a fan-shaped system to the both sides from the axial sub-vertical shift zone, are reliably confirmed by the data of geophysical investigations. Taking into account the known correlation relationships between seismodislocation parameters (length and maximum displacement amplitude) and earthquake magnitudes, it is possible to suggest that the Gunzhin Fault generated two paleoearthquakes with the magnitude of about 7.0 in the Late Holocene. It means that displacements along that fault could attain the intensity of 9–10 degrees in the Ulan Bator territory according to the MSK-64 scale. This result must be taken into account in estimation of seismic hazard in the territory discussed.

Assessment of the Level and Spectral Characteristics of Seismic Impacts on Hydropower Areas in Siberia

The conventional radiocarbon ages of soil horizons limiting the timing of six fault-generating dis- placements within the East Sayan structure of the Main Sayan Fault and four displacements within the Tora structure of the Tunka Fault (M > 7) have been calibrated according to the IntCal04 calibration curve. It was revealed that between time periods of 12 Ka and 5.4 Ka years ago, the recurrence of earthquakes associated with movements along the faults in the East Sayan structure occurred once every 3000 years. After seismic quiescence, since 1100 years, one earthquake has occurred every 440 years. Using the Monte Carlo method, the possibility of the recurrence of strong earthquakes at different probability levels was considered. At a fre- quency probability of 95% the Main Sayan fault may be hazardous, dating from about 2120 AD. When low- ering the threshold probability to 72%, the beginning of the period of potential hazard is reduced to about 2030 AD. In both cases the maximum possibility of the occurrence of the next strong earthquake is not earlier than in the 22nd century. For the Tora structure, the periodicity of the recurrence of the earthquakes was esti- mated as 2800 yearsfor the past 11Ka with a probability of over 95% of the recurrence of earthquakes. This allows us to assume that currently the Tora structure is within the time interval of the potential risk of the recurrence of a strong earthquake.
